LIKE HOW IT INCENTIVIZES LAX GRADING OR LAX TEACHING PRACTICES, AS WELL AS HOW IT IS OFTEN GRADING TEACHERS ON FACTORS THAT ARE OUT OF THEIR CONTROL.
I DON'T WANT TO RELITIGATE ALL THAT RESEARCH, BUT I DO WANT TO TALK ABOUT MY PERSPECTIVE AS A MATH TEACHER AND HOW THAT SPECIFICALLY IS IMPACTED BY THE STUDENT SURVEY. GENERALLY, THE SURVEY IS NOT GREAT FOR MATH TEACHERS BECAUSE THINK ABOUT MATH.
THE CONTENT IS RELENTLESSLY CUMULATIVE IN A WAY THAT NO OTHER SUBJECT REALLY IS.
WELL, MAYBE PHYSICS ACTUALLY, NOW THAT I THINK ABOUT IT.
BUT ALSO THE CONTENT IS VERY ABSTRACT AND STUDENTS HAVE YEARS WORTH OF KNOWLEDGE GAPS BY THE TIME THEY GET TO SOMETHING LIKE ALGEBRA II, WHICH IS WHAT I'M TEACHING. I'LL ALSO ADD THAT ALGEBRA II IS THE FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME THAT A LOT OF STUDENTS HAVE BEEN ASKED TO DO MATH WITHOUT A CALCULATOR.
IF YOU LOOK AT OUR STUDENTS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND ALGEBRA I, BECAUSE THEY'RE TRYING TO MAXIMIZE STAR SCORES, LOTS OF TEACHERS ARE INCENTIVIZED TO FOCUS ON CALCULATOR TRICKS RATHER THAN ACTUALLY DOING MATH BY HAND.
AND THAT MEANS THAT WHEN THEY COME TO MY CLASS, THERE'S A LITTLE BIT OF RESENTMENT, YOU KNOW, LIKE, HOW DARE YOU? HOW DARE YOU MAKE ME KNOW MY TIMES TABLES OR OTHER MATHEMATICAL THINGS THAT SHOULD BE RIGHT OFF THE CUFF.
IS THAT SOMETHING I SHOULD BE PUNISHED FOR, THOUGH? MAINTAINING RIGOR, DOING MATH IN A WAY THAT WILL ACTUALLY PREPARE THEM FOR DOING COLLEGE LEVEL MATH AND EVENTUALLY GOING ON TO STEM FIELDS? AT A RECENT STAFF MEETING AT SUNSET.
WE DID TALK ABOUT HOW OUR TSI COLLEGE READINESS METRICS WERE NOT WHERE THEY NEEDED TO BE.
AND I'LL ADD THAT THE MATH TSI IS LARGELY EITHER NO CALCULATOR OR LIMITED IN YOUR CALCULATOR USAGE.
SO LET'S CONNECT THE DOTS. THERE'S A CONNECTION BETWEEN MAKING YOUNG STUDENTS SUPER CALCULATOR DEPENDENT AND THEN SEEING THEM STRUGGLE IN ALGEBRA II, PRE-CALCULUS, ETC.. AND THEN LATER SEEING THEM STRUGGLE TO MAKE IT THROUGH COLLEGE.
TEACHING MATH BY HAND IS THE COLLEGE PREP THAT I THINK STUDENTS NEED.
WE CAN USE SOARING RHETORIC ABOUT SEEING THE WHOLE CHILD AND NOT TEACHING TO THE TEST.

WE INVITE YOU TO HAVE THOSE CONVERSATIONS WITH US.SURVEYS ARE A WAY TO GIVE STUDENTS A VOICE. WHAT MANY OF OUR TEACHERS OBSERVE AS THEY MEASURE POPULARITY, NOT TEACHING QUALITY. STUDENTS OFTEN RESPOND BASED ON LIKABILITY, STRICTNESS, OR CLASSROOM RULES RATHER THAN EFFECTIVE INSTRUCTION.
A TEACHER WHO HOLDS STUDENTS ACCOUNTABLE OR SETS HIGH EXPECTATIONS CAN EASILY SCORE LOWER THAN ONE WHO'S MORE LENIENT, EVEN WHEN THE STRICTER TEACHER HELPS STUDENTS ACHIEVE FAR MORE ACADEMICALLY.
THE RESULTS THEMSELVES ARE ALSO HIGHLY SUBJECTIVE.
AND IN SMALLER CLASSES, JUST A FEW NEGATIVE COMMENTS CAN DRASTICALLY LOWER A TEACHER'S RATING, MAKING THIS DATA STATISTICALLY UNSTABLE. WE ALSO HAVE TO RECOGNIZE THAT YOUNG STUDENTS SIMPLY CAN'T ACCURATELY EVALUATE INSTRUCTION.
EVEN MORE CONCERNING ARE THE ISSUES OF BIAS AND SURVEY RESULTS.
RESEARCH SHOWS THAT TEACHERS OF COLOR, WOMEN AND THOSE WHO TEACH ENGLISH LEARNERS OFTEN RECEIVE LOWER SCORES DUE TO RACIAL, GENDER, OR LANGUAGE BIAS. WHEN WE USE THAT KIND OF BIAS DATA TO DETERMINE PAY OR EVALUATIONS, WE'RE WE'RE UNDERMINING THE DISTRICT'S COMMITMENT TO EQUITY AND FAIRNESS.
SURVEYS CAN STILL SERVE A PURPOSE. THEY CAN HELP TEACHERS REFLECT ON INSTRUCTIONAL DELIVERY, ENGAGEMENT AND RELATIONSHIPS, AND THEY CAN PROVIDE VALUABLE INSIGHT INTO THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE.
