[00:05:02]
PLEASE LISTEN CAREFULLY FOR YOUR NAME.I WILL CALL FOUR SPEAKERS AT A TIME WOULD THE FIRST TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
DAEVON ROBINSON AND NELSON LEDESMA, FOLLOWED BY ROBERT CECCARELLI AND MIKE HOOK ON DECK.
IT'S ME. YOU MAY BEGIN SPEAKING.
HELLO AND THANK YOU ALL FOR TAKING YOUR TIME OUT TO LISTEN TO ME.
I COME FROM PINKSTON HIGH SCHOOL AND I COME TO REPRESENT BAM BECOMING A MAN.
WHAT I CAN REALLY SAY ABOUT IT IS THAT GIVING IT A CHANCE IT REALLY LETS YOU BECOME YOU AND HELP YOU FIND YOUR OWN PATH IN LIFE, AND I'M GLAD THAT Y'ALL GAVE US THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE THIS IN DALLAS, BECAUSE WITHOUT IT, IT WOULD BE A LOT MORE BORING IN SCHOOL.
AND IT LETS ME MEET MORE PEOPLE IN MY GRADE.
SO THAT'S A REALLY BIG PLUS ALONG WITH IT.
LIKE I SAID, IT'S REALLY FUN, SO I HOPE Y'ALL CAN KEEP IT AROUND FOR MANY YEARS FOR THE NEXT GENERATIONS TO HAVE THIS EXPERIENCE, AND THAT'S IT.
WOULD THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE NELSON LEDESMA, FOLLOWED BY ROBERT CECCARELLI AND MIKE HOOK AND ANTHONY PETERSON ON DECK. HELLO, MY NAME IS NELSON LEDESMA AND I AM A SOPHOMORE P-TECH STUDENT AT SUNSET HIGH SCHOOL, A DEBATE POLICY STATE QUALIFIER AND AN ACADEMIC DECATHLON GOLD MEDALIST.
I LOVE SUNSET AND THE FACULTY, AND THEY'VE BEEN ABLE TO CREATE AN AMAZING, SUPPORTIVE CULTURE ON MY CAMPUS, BUT MY EXPERIENCES AT OTHER SCHOOLS IN DALLAS ISD HAVE NOT BEEN SO FORTUNATE. I STILL VIVIDLY REMEMBER MY FIRST SCHOOL SHOOTER THREAT IN MIDDLE SCHOOL.
I REMEMBER US ALL WANTING TO HIDE UNDER THE TABLE BECAUSE WE FELT IT WAS SAFER.
ON THE ONE HAND, I FELT AS THOUGH I SHOULD BE WORRIED FOR MY SAFETY.
ON THE OTHER HAND, THE OTHER STUDENTS SEEMED TO ACCEPT IT AS NORMAL, AS IF IT WAS HABIT.
I FELT PARALYZED IN A SPACE THAT WAS NEITHER BLACK OR WHITE, BUT GRAY.
SHOULD I HAVE BEEN PANICKING OR SHOULD I HAVE JUST SCROLLED ON MY PHONE LIKE MY CLASSMATES? THIS MARKED THE BEGINNING OF WHERE FEAR BECAME A CONSTANT COMPANION, OVERSHADOWING OUR ABILITY TO LEARN AND THRIVE.
FOR EXAMPLE, LET'S TALK ABOUT NUTRITION.
EVEN THE WATER WE LEARNED, WE LEARNED NOT EVEN THE WATER TASTED TERRIBLE.
HOW CAN WE EXPECT OUR TEACHERS TO PRIORITIZE EDUCATION WHEN THE SAFETY AND WELL-BEING OF STUDENTS HANG IN THE BALANCE? SADLY, MY EXPERIENCES ARE NOT UNIQUE.
IT BEGS THE QUESTION, WHAT WILL YOU DO TO ADDRESS THE PERVASIVE INEQUALITY THAT ROBS OUR CHILDREN OF THEIR RIGHTS TO QUALITY EDUCATION? AS WE CONTEMPLATE THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION, LET US REJECT THE NOTION THAT TEST SCORES SHOULD DICTATE THE ALLOCATION OF RESOURCES.
DEMANDING ACCOUNTABILITY, ACCOUNTABILITY OF OUR LEADERS, AND STRIVING TOWARDS A FUTURE WHERE THEY WHERE EVERY CHILD HAS ACCESS TO SAFE, NURTURING ENVIRONMENTS IN WHICH THEY CAN LEARN AND GROW. THANK YOU [APPLAUSE].
THANK YOU WOULD THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONES.
ROBERT CECCARELLI AND MIKE HOOK WITH ANTHONY PETERSON AND SONYA DAVIS ON DECK, ROBERT CECCARELLI NOT PRESENT, MIKE HOOK AND ANTHONY PETERSON, FOLLOWED BY SONYA DAVIS AND ANTOINESHA JEFFERSON.
[00:10:09]
AS OUR AS OUR COUNTRY.OUR CITY OF DALLAS, COUNTY OF DALLAS GOES THROUGH CONTINUED HARD TIMES.
I WANT TO BRING UP THE NAME OF A COP NAMED BRANDON TATUM.
BRANDON TATUM HAS A RADIO SHOW, AND HE ESPOUSES A LOT OF INTELLIGENT INFORMATION AS IT REGARDS OUR CURRENT AFFAIRS IN OUR COUNTRY. SO BRANDON TATUM, I RECOMMEND THE PARENTS LOOK HIM UP.
SPEAKING OF PARENTS, THE GARBAGE IN IN OUR SOCIETY AT LARGE AND IN PARTICULAR DALLAS.
THIS IS GOING TO HAVE TO BE ADDRESSED BY THE TAXPAYERS, THE PARENTS, THE TEACHERS.
THIS WILL NOT BE FIXED BY ANYTHING BUT WE THE PEOPLE.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL DOWN IN SOUTH DALLAS CALLED KENNEDY CURRY WAS HIJACKED BY SOME FOLKS AND RENAMED THAT SCHOOL I INTEND TO WITH OTHER FOLKS FROM HOPEFULLY EVENTUALLY NORTH SOUTH EAST WEST DALLAS AND CENTRAL DALLAS GET THAT ATROCITY REMOVED AND GET THE THE NAME KENNEDY CURRY REINSTATED, AS IT SHOULD BE.
THAT'S ROBBERY OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY THERE.
A LOT OF THEIR HISTORY, A LOT OF THEIR IDENTITY, AND DR.
CURRY, I'M SURE WOULD WOULD BE DISMAYED AT THE WAY OUR SOCIETY IS BEING CONDUCTED.
I THINK THAT NUMBER FIVE WAS AT LEAST A KEY PLAYER IN THAT, AND ALSO, I WOULD LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT NUMBER SIX ALSO APPROPRIATELY EXPRESSED DISMAY AT THE PAY RAISE FOR THE SUPERINTENDENT.
SO WE NEED TO KEEP THAT IN THE FOREFRONT OF OUR MINDS, AND OF COURSE, WE NEED TO KEEP THE TEACHERS IN MIND.
NUMBER FIVE IS MAXIE JOHNSON, NUMBER SIX.
THANK YOU, MR. HOOK. YOUR TIME HAS EXPIRED.
WILL THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONES.
ANTHONY PETERSON AND SONYA DAVIS, FOLLOWED BY ANTOINESHA JEFFERSON AND SONIA TUBBS ON DECK.
BLACK HIGH SCHOOL MALES ARE OFTEN MARGINALIZED, STIGMATIZED, AND VICTIMIZED.
ON APRIL THE 12TH, 2024 AT WILBUR HIGH SCHOOL, THE DISTRICT FAILED TO PROTECT OUR STUDENTS.
THE SOUTHERN SECTOR SCHOOLS, ESPECIALLY WHERE THERE IS A LARGE POPULATION OF BLACK STUDENTS, HAS A NOTICEABLE RELAXED ENVIRONMENT WITH LOW EXPECTATIONS FROM BLACK MALE STUDENTS.
THIS VIOLENT PRACTICE ALSO OCCURS ON SCHOOL BUSSES.
BULLYING AND PHYSICAL VIOLENCE ON MANY ROUTES HAS BECOME THE NORM.
THE DISTRICT DOES NOT PROTECT, SUPPORT NOR NURTURE THESE YOUNG BLACK MALE BUS RIDERS.
MANY OF THE GUNS AND DRUGS ARE TRAFFICKED INTO THE SCHOOLS PER THE SCHOOL BUS.
[00:15:04]
RACE DOES MATTER, AND OFTEN OUR BLACK BOYS FALL VICTIM TO THE FACT THAT OUR DISTRICT IS NOT SET UP TO NURTURE, SUPPORT AND PROTECT BLACK HIGH SCHOOL BOYS IN THE HOOD.BOARD MEMBERS RESEARCH THE PROBLEM, FIND RESOURCES, IMPLEMENT PROGRAMS THAT WILL CURB THIS BLACK OR BLACK MALE SCHOOL VIOLENCE. SET THE TONE.
YOU HAVE SEVERELY DISRESPECTED US.
YOU KNOW, OUR DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVES HAVE ADDRESSED THE PARENTS OF WILMER-HUTCHINS HIGH SCHOOL.
BLACK FOLKS AND OTHERS IN THE SOUTHERN SECTOR COMMUNITY HAVE QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS.
WHAT ARE YOU COVERING UP? WHAT REALLY HAPPENED? IT HAS BEEN REPORTED BY RELIABLE SOURCES THAT THE SAME GUN WAS IN THE SCHOOL THE DAY BEFORE THE SHOOTING, AND THAT THE EXECUTIVE ADMINISTRATION, ADMINISTRATION, INCLUDING YOURSELF, KNEW ABOUT IT.
IS THIS THE WAY YOU TREAT THE BLACK COMMUNITY? IS THIS THE WAY YOU TREAT IT? THE BLACK COMMUNITY IN AUSTIN, THOSE WERE OUR BABIES THAT WAS VICTIMIZED.
THAT'S THAT WAS OUR BLOOD ON THE FLOOR.
OUR THOUGHTS MATTER, OUR FEELINGS.
YOUR TIME HAS EXPIRED [APPLAUSE].
WOULD THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
SONYA DAVIS, FOLLOWED BY ANTOINESHA JEFFERSON WITH SONIA TUBBS AND [INAUDIBLE] MARTINEZ ON DECK SONIA DAVIS. NOT PRESENT ANTOINESHA JEFFERSON, FOLLOWED BY SONIA TUBBS.
SONIA TUBBS, FOLLOWED BY [INAUDIBLE] MARTINEZ.
WILL THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE? CARLOS RODRIGUEZ NOT PRESENT.
FOLLOWED BY CHARITY MACKLEMORE.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME.
I'M HERE REPRESENTING SHADY OAKS HOA.
WE ARE IN DALLAS CITY, DALLAS COUNTY.
AT THIS POINT, IT'S BEEN GOING ON.
WE HAVE BEEN WORKING, TRYING TO DEAL WITH OUR LOCAL ADMINISTRATION.
WE REALLY LIKE TO BRING THIS IN FRONT OF THE BOARD AND MAKE SURE THAT YOU'RE AWARE OF OUR ISSUES.
WE STARTED OUR COMMUNITY IN 2017.
IN 2019, WE FINISHED BUILDING OUR COMMUNITY.
WE'VE ACTUALLY SEEN THEM WITH HIGH LEVELS OF TRUANCY, PROPERTY DAMAGE, PHYSICAL ASSAULTS, FIRE DAMAGE, OVERALL ILLEGAL CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDING MANY CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES AGAINST EACH OTHER AS WELL AS PEOPLE WITHIN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD.
WE'VE ONLY SEEN AN INCREASE IN 2021, 22 AND 23.
CHILDREN HAVE BEEN CAUGHT IN INAPPROPRIATE ACTS, SEXUAL AND OTHERWISE.
WE HAVE RECEIVED PROPERTY DAMAGE TO ONLY OUR COMMUNITY PARK, BUT OUR HOMES.
WE'RE ASKING THE ADMINISTRATION TO HELP AND WE ARE GETTING THE ANSWER.
WELL ONCE THEY ARE OFF PROPERTY, THEY ARE NOT OUR PROBLEM.
THAT ANSWER NO LONGER WORKS FOR US.
WE NEED THE STRATEGY LOOKED AT.
WE NEED SOME TYPE OF ANSWER FOR WHY THEY ARE GETTING OFF PROPERTY AS THEY HAVE BEEN.
SO ON A DAILY BASIS, THEY CAN SEE THAT WE HAVE 10 TO 20 TO 40 ON SOME DAYS SKIPPING SCHOOL.
THE PROPERTY LINE IS AN OPEN PROPERTY LINE.
THERE IS NO FENCE. YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE THESE STUDENTS WALKING ACROSS THE ACTUAL PROPERTY THEMSELVES.
WE'VE HAD FOUR HOMES THAT HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY BROKEN INTO THAT WERE EITHER BEING THE BANKS WERE TRYING TO, TO RESELL WAS IN FORECLOSURE OR IT WAS BEING SOLD BY THE ACTUAL HOMEOWNER THEMSELVES.
HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS OF DAMAGE WAS DONE TO THESE FOUR HOMES.
WE CURRENTLY HAVE A HOME THAT JUST TWO MONTHS AGO WAS SET ON FIRE WITH STUDENTS INSIDE THE HOUSE.
THEY UNDERSTAND THAT THEY DID IT.
[00:20:01]
WE ARE IN THEIR TIMING BECAUSE WE ARE ON THE OUTSKIRTS, UNFORTUNATELY, HAS NOT BEEN THE BEST.YOU'RE WELCOME TO LOOK THROUGH THE PAMPHLETS WE SENT OUT.
I APOLOGIZE, SOME OF THE PICTURES ARE FROM VIDEOS, SO THEY'RE VERY NOT THE BEST, BUT HOWEVER, I HAVE OVER 40 VIDEOS FROM JUST THE LAST TWO YEARS OF THESE KIDS IN OUR IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD FIGHTING EACH OTHER.
THEY HAVE. THANK YOU, MISS MACKLEMORE YOUR TIME HAS EXPIRED.
WOULD THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
RAFINI JUNE BLACKWELL AND OLIVIA DESTRAIN, FOLLOWED BY [INAUDIBLE] JACKSON AND MARY ANN HOSKINS.
HELLO. YES, I'M. I'M HERE SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF DISD DISTRICT FIVE.
ON THE INCIDENT THAT HAPPENED AT WILMER-HUTCHINS.
I AM A MOM WHO DIDN'T SAY ONE TIME ABOUT THINGS NOT WORK GOING ACCORDINGLY.
I REACHED OUT TO THE SCHOOL BOARD, SPOKE WITH A COUPLE OF PEOPLE.
THEY ALWAYS GOT MY NAME, MY NUMBER, LISTENED TO ME, SAID, THEY'RE GOING TO CALL ME BACK.
I HAVE VOICED MULTIPLE TIMES THAT Y'ALL ARE NOT FOLLOWING PROTOCOL.
I SIT UP BECAUSE I HAVE A CHILD THAT I'M NOT GOING TO LIE, SHE'S SHE'S A LITTLE UNRULY AT TIMES.
SO I WAS AT THAT SCHOOL MORE THAN ANYBODY ELSE.
I'VE SEEN STUDENTS GO IN, METAL DETECTORS GO OFF, IT LIGHTS RED AND IT SIRENS.
IT DON'T JUST THINK, THINK, THINK NO WHEN IT'S SIRENS, THERE'S AN ALERT.
THERE WERE NEVER AN OFFICER UP THERE CHECKING BAGS OR THE STUDENTS.
I HAVE VOICED MULTIPLE TIMES IT'S GOING TO BE A SCHOOL SHOOTING.
IT'S GOING TO BE A SCHOOL SHOOTING.
I FEEL LIKE BECAUSE THIS WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED IN CEDAR HILL.
THIS WOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED IN RED OAK, BUT BECAUSE OUR CHILDREN ARE BROWN SKINNED IT HAPPENED BECAUSE I SCREAMED IT TO THE POINT WHERE MY KIDS SAID, MAMA, YOU'RE EMBARRASSING US. STOP! NO, THE MOTHER IS GOING OFF THEIR FAVORITE LINE AT WILMER-HUTCHINS IS I'M SORRY WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH MANPOWER.
WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH MANPOWER.
I EVEN ON NEWS BREAKS, SEND OUT A VIDEO ONE TIME OF THE KIDS STANDING OUTSIDE IN THE RAIN.
WHY AREN'T Y'ALL LETTING THESE KIDS IN THE SCHOOL? WELL, WE AIN'T GOT ENOUGH STAFF RIGHT NOW.
THEY'RE OUT THERE GETTING WET. WHY? BECAUSE WE'RE BROWN SKINNED. BECAUSE THERE'S ONLY EIGHT WHITES IN THE SCHOOL.
THAT'S NOT FAIR, AND THEN I'M ALSO BECAUSE I'M NOT FROM HERE.
I'M LIKE, WHY DON'T THEY? WELL, YOU KNOW, THIS IS A TRANSITIONING AREA.
I'VE NEVER HEARD THAT BEFORE IN MY LIFE.
WHAT'S A TRANSITIONING AREA? WELL, YOU KNOW WHERE WE HAVE THE HISPANICS WHO ARE DEPORTED OVER OR JUST GOT OVER OR THE PRISON SYSTEM.
THEY HAVE CONTRACTS WITH THESE APARTMENTS AROUND HERE.
I PAY MIDDLE CLASS RENT ON A ON A NICE ROAD.
THE FACT THAT MY DAUGHTER WAS SHAKING, SHAKING, SHAKING WHEN I PICKED HER UP.
I'VE TAUGHT MY CHILDREN, IF YOU CAN GET AWAY, GET AWAY, AND THAT'S WHAT SHE DID.
SHE DID NOT STAY IN THAT BUILDING WAITING TO GET KILLED.
SHE CALLED ME AND SAID, MAMA, CAN YOU COME GET ME? I WENT AND GOT HER AND SHE WAS TERRORIZED.
YOUR TIME HAS EXPIRED [APPLAUSE].
WOULD THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
OLIVIA DESTRAIN AND [INAUDIBLE] JACKSON, FOLLOWED BY MARY ANN HOSKINS AND SABRINA BRENHAM ON DECK.
HI EVERYONE. MY NAME IS LYDIA AND I'M A PARENT OF DALLAS ISD.
I'M HERE TO TALK ABOUT SOME THINGS THAT I HAVE IT IN MY HEART SINCE THE LAST BOARD MEETING.
WE WANT CHILDREN TO NOT DEAL WITH DEPRESSION, SUICIDAL THOUGHTS, AND KNOW WHO THEY ARE AND BE CONFIDENT, BUT WE BELIEVE, I BELIEVE WE CANNOT HAVE PEACE, SAFETY, HEALTHY, EMOTIONAL KIDS WITHOUT GOD.
THEY WANT TO ELIMINATE GOD EVEN FROM OUR KIDS CONVERSATION, BUT WE ARE GOING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION.
MANY PEOPLE, MANY PEOPLE ARE TALKING THEY THAT THEY WANT GOD BACK IN OUR SCHOOL, BUT WE CANNOT HAVE HIM BACK IN OUR SCHOOL, IN OUR SOCIETY, IF HE'S NOT BACK IN OUR LIFE.
I WANT TO ASK YOU A SIMPLE QUESTION.
[00:25:02]
YOU AND ALL OF YOU.DO YOU KNOW GOD? DO YOU WANT TO KNOW HIM MORE? I HAVE LETTERS THAT THEY WILL GIVE YOU AT THE END.
IT'S CALLED A FATHER'S LOVE LETTER.
I ENCOURAGE YOU TO TAKE A FEW MINUTES AND READ IT AND MEDITATE ON IT.
ONE DAY ALL OF US WILL GIVE AN ACCOUNT TO GOD FOR WHAT WE HAVE DONE IN OUR LIFE, AND HOW WE MANAGE THE INFLUENCE THAT WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN US. I WANT TO INFLUENCE THE YOUNG GENERATION NOT JUST TO HAVE A GOOD EDUCATION, BUT TO MAKE SURE THEY KNOW THE REAL MEANING OF LIFE AND WHAT IS THEIR PURPOSE.
I BRING THIS ROPE AS A TO SYMBOLIZE.
IMAGINE THIS ROPE WILL NEVER END, AND THIS IS LIKE AN THIS IS LIKE A RED PART IS VERY SMALL.
THIS IS OUR LIFE IN THIS WORLD, AND THIS IS THE ETERNITY, AND HOW WE SPEND OUR THIS SHORT LIFE IN THIS WORLD WILL INFLUENCE OUR ETERNITY AND LEADERS, BOARD LEADERS, EVERYONE AROUND US.
GOD, GIVE US SPECIAL YOU THIS POSITION FOR A PERIOD OF TIME.
I WANT TO ENCOURAGE YOU TO USE YOUR POWER, YOUR INFLUENCE, IN SUCH A WAY THAT ONE DAY GOD WILL REWARD YOU FOR THE GOOD WORKS THAT YOU DID FOR OUR KIDS AND FOR OUR COMMUNITY.
THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE] WOULD THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.

SABRINA BRENHAM, FOLLOWED BY JOSHUA MITCHELL.JOSHUA MITCHELL FOLLOWED BY TAMIKA SEATON.
TAMIKA SEATON, FOLLOWED BYVAMIKA SMITH WITH FRED GONZALES AND JASMINE FLORES ON DECK.
GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS TAMIKA SEATON, ALUMNI OF THE L.G.
PINKSTON HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1991, AS I SERVED ALSO THERE AS THE CROWNING MISS PINKSTON.
I HAVE DONE MANY WORKS AND DEEDS IN THAT HIGH SCHOOL.
I STAND BEFORE YOU AS A COSMETOLOGY REPRESENTATIVE FOR 35 YEARS, REQUESTING TO BRING BACK THE COSMETOLOGY PROGRAM AND THE BARBERING PROGRAM. AS WE'RE ALL FAMILIAR SKYLINE HIGH SCHOOL JUST REACHED A MILESTONE, AND I AM FRIENDS WITH THE MANSEL ROBINSON THAT IS SPEARHEADING THAT OVER AT THAT SCHOOL. I'M A PRODUCT OF THE WEST DALLAS AREA.
I ARGUE WITH MY COUNSELOR, MISS STEWART, THE GREAT LATE MISS STEWART.
SHE SHE WAS SO DETERMINED THAT I WAS GOING TO GO TO COLLEGE.
I SAID, MISS STEWART, THAT'S NOT IN MY BLOOD.
THAT'S NOT WHAT I HAVE TO BE IN MY FUTURE.
THAT'S NOT WHAT I SEE, BUT SHE PRESSED AND PRESSED ME ANYWAYS.
SHE FOUGHT WITH ME EVERY CHANCE SHE GOT, BUT I HELD TRUE TO THE GIFT GOD HAD GIVEN ME IN MY HANDS.
I WAS PREPARING MYSELF FOR A FUTURE THAT ONE COULD HAVE EVER DREAMED OF.
ALTHOUGH COLLEGES WERE ACCEPTING ME, I CHOSE A DIFFERENT CAREER PATH.
NOT EVERY CHILD OR STUDENT WILL FIND THEIR PURPOSE THROUGH A FOUR YEAR COLLEGE INSTITUTION.
I DISCOVERED MINES THROUGH WANTING TO MAKE WOMEN SMILE.
IT WAS MY FAVORITE THING TO DO AND I FELL IN LOVE WITH IT.
I SAID ALL OF THAT TO SAY THIS, THOSE DAYS OF COLLEGE DEGREES ARE NOT THE SAME AS BEFORE.
THE NEW GENERATIONS ARE MORE BRIGHTER IN THEIR CRAFTINESS, CREATIVITY, AND THEY ARE VERY IMPACTFUL.
THE SKILLS THEY POSSESS DOESN'T COME FROM AN INSTITUTION, BUT FROM A SPACE OF PASSION AND PURPOSE.
PLEASE ALLOW THEM TO BE BETTER VERSIONS OF THEMSELVES THROUGH TRADES.
I BECAME A CONFIDANT, A FRIEND AND A COACH TO PUSH MANY ACROSS THE PATHS THEY FELT WERE IMPOSSIBLE.
I BELIEVE IF YOU BRING BACK THE PROGRAMS OR ESTABLISH A NEW PROGRAM FOR US, OUR STUDENTS GET TO LIVE OUT LOUD THROUGH THEIR CREATIVITY AND COUNTLESS OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW AND EXCEL IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY AS MYSELF.
THE COSMETOLOGY AND BARBERING INDUSTRY SERVES THE WORLD WE LIVE IN, IN SO MANY FACETS.
WE ALL CAN ATTEST TO THAT TODAY BECAUSE WE'VE ALL SAT IN THE CHAIR OF SOMEONE THAT WE TRUST.
THANK YOU, MISS SEATON YOUR TIME HAS EXPIRED.
WOULD THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
VAMIKA SMITH AND FRED GONZALEZ, FOLLOWED BY JASMINE FLORES AND TANYA HERNANDEZ.
I'M A PROUD MOTHER OF DEAVON ROBINSON, AND HE GOES TO L.G.
PINKSTON HIGH SCHOOL AND HE'S IN THE BAND PROGRAM.
I AM GRATEFUL FOR THAT PROGRAM BECAUSE IT GAVE ME A WAY TO COMMUNICATE WITH MY SON BEING A SINGLE MOTHER, IT GIVES THEM A WAY TO COMMUNICATE WITH OTHER YOUNG BOYS AND MEN TOO THAT HE DOESN'T WANT TO CONFIDE ME IN.
SO HE HAS AN OUTLET FOR, AND THAT PROGRAM TO ME IS GREAT.
IT'S GIVING HIM FRIENDS THAT HE DIDN'T HAVE BEFORE AND ALSO GIVING HIM A SPACE TO EXPLORE HIMSELF AND BE HIMSELF AND TO MANEUVER THROUGH LIFE WITH OTHER PEOPLE AND NOT WITH JUST WHAT MOM SAYS OR WHAT DAD SAYS, BUT ALSO WHAT EVERYONE ELSE IS SAYING.
HE HAS HIS OWN OWN MINDSET IN THAT PROGRAM, AND TO ME, I AM VERY GRATEFUL FOR THE PROGRAM BECAUSE IT GIVES HIM, LIKE I SAID, AN OUTLET TO GET EVERYTHING OUT THAT HE WANTS TO GET OUT, AND I JUST APPRECIATE THE PROGRAM AND I HOPE YOU KEEP IT AROUND.
[00:35:01]
THANK YOU [APPLAUSE]. WOULD THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE FRED GONZALEZ AND JASMINE FLORES, FOLLOWED BY TANYA HERNANDEZ AND JUDITH JUAREZ ON DECK.GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS MR. FRED GONZALEZ. I STAND BEFORE YOU TODAY NOT ONLY AS AN EDUCATOR, BUT AS A VOICE FOR THOSE WHO TOO OFTEN CANNOT SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES.
IT IS WITH A VERY HEAVY HEART THAT I BRING TO LIGHT A CONCERNING SITUATION WITHIN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, ONE THAT DIRECTLY IMPACTS THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION AND SUPPORT THAT THESE STUDENTS RECEIVE.
IN SEPTEMBER OF 2023, THE DISTRICT ISSUED A CLEAR DIRECTIVE STATING THAT SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS AND STAFF MUST BE ASSIGNED TO SPEND 100% OF THE SCHOOL DAY DIRECTLY SERVING OR INSTRUCTING STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS.
THIS DIRECTIVE WAS MEANT TO ENSURE THAT THESE STUDENTS RECEIVE THE DEDICATED SUPPORT OUTLINED IN THEIR INDIVIDUALIZED EDUCATION PROGRAMS, AND TO ENSURE THAT FEDERAL FUNDING FOR THESE POSITIONS WAS USED APPROPRIATELY.
HOWEVER, DESPITE THIS OFFICIAL COMMUNICATION, MANY SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS AND STAFF CONTINUE TO BE PULLED AWAY FROM THEIR VITAL ROLES TO COVER STASHING STAFFING SHORTAGES IN PRESCRIBED AND INAPPROPRIATE WAYS.
THIS IS WHY I STAND BEFORE YOU NOW.
DESPITE OUR PRINCIPAL BEING AWARE OF THE DISTRICT'S DIRECTIVE.
DESPITE OUR BEST EFFORT, OUR PRINCIPAL PERSISTS IN NEGLECTING THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS.
THIS SITUATION IS NOT ONLY CONCERNING, BUT UNACCEPTABLE.
WE ARE NOT BLIND TO THE DIFFICULTIES ADMINISTRATORS FACE WITH SUBSTITUTE AND FUNDING SHORTAGES, BUT EVERY STUDENT, REGARDLESS OF THEIR ABILITIES, DESERVES A FREE AND APPROPRIATE EDUCATION WITH SUPPORT TAILORED TO THEIR NEEDS, AND WE ALREADY FACE A NATIONWIDE SHORTAGE OF SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS WITH RAPIDLY INCREASING CASELOADS FOR THOSE OF US WHO REMAIN.
SO IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT WE HONOR THE PURPOSE OF THE FEDERAL FUNDING PROVIDED BY THESE ROLES AND UPHOLD THE COMMITMENTS OUTLINED IN THE STUDENT'S IEPS BY PROTECTING THE RESOURCES AND TIME THAT SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS AND STAFF NEED TO FULFILL THEIR CRITICAL ROLES.
I URGE THE DISTRICT TO TAKE SWIFT AND DECISIVE ACTION TO RECTIFY THIS SITUATION.
WE CANNOT ALLOW THE EDUCATION OF OUR MOST VULNERABLE STUDENTS BE COMPROMISED ANY LONGER.
I AM READING THIS TESTIMONY ON BEHALF OF A SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER AT A DISD MIDDLE SCHOOL.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR TIME [APPLAUSE].
WHEN STUDENTS AND TEACHERS LED A WALKOUT THE FOLLOWING SCHOOL DAY AFTER THE TRAGIC EVENT, INSTEAD OF TAKING THE OPPORTUNITY TO LISTEN TO THEIR VALID CONCERNS ABOUT THEIR SAFETY, THEY WERE REPRIMANDED AND SILENCED FOR SPEAKING UP IN A SITUATION IN WHICH THEIR LIVES WERE THREATENED.
STUDENTS AND TEACHERS ARE ENTITLED TO A SAFE LEARNING AND WORK ENVIRONMENT.
IMPLEMENTING MORE FUNDING TOWARDS EMOTIONALLY SUPPORTIVE STAFF AND ADMINISTRATION HAS PROVEN TO BE A MORE EFFECTIVE SOLUTION THAN INCREASING POLICE PRESENCE IN OUR SCHOOLS. FROM THE LITTLE NEWS COVERAGE I SAW, IT WAS ALARMING TO HEAR THAT DURING THE LOCKDOWN, TEACHERS RECEIVED NO DIRECT COMMUNICATION FROM ADMINISTRATION AND HAD TO RESORT TO FINDING UPDATES ON SOCIAL MEDIA.
THIS IS COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE.
THERE SHOULD BE PROPER PROTOCOL IN THESE INSTANCES IN ORDER FOR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS TO FEEL SAFE.
I BELIEVE THAT THE TEACHERS THAT WERE PUT ON LEAVE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN RETALIATED AGAINST FOR UPLIFTING THE VOICES OF THEIR STUDENTS, BUT INSTEAD SHOULD BE COMMENDED FOR THEIR SUPPORT.
I STAND WITH THE STUDENTS AND TEACHERS THAT ARE FIGHTING FOR A SAFER AND BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR US ALL.
THIS SHOULD NEVER HAVE HAPPENED AND WE WILL KEEP FIGHTING TO ENSURE THAT IT DOESN'T HAPPEN AGAIN.
[00:40:05]
JUAREZ, FOLLOWED BY JORGE CASTRO AND DANIELLE CURTIS.GOOD EVENING MY NAME IS TANYA HERNANDEZ AND I'VE BEEN A BILINGUAL TEACHER FOR DISD FOR 11 YEARS.
HERE I AM TONIGHT TO LET YOU KNOW THAT YOUR TRANSFER PEER SYSTEM FOR CURRENT EMPLOYEES IS BROKEN.
I'M HERE IN FRONT OF YOU TODAY, FEELING CONFUSED, HOPELESS, NOT VALUED, AND DEFEATED.
LAST YEAR, I WAS AWARDED A PIN OF TEN YEARS OF APPRECIATION FOR SERVICE TO THIS DISTRICT, AND FOR A SECOND YEAR IN A ROW, I HAVE APPLIED FOR A TRANSFER WITHIN THE DISTRICT AND I HAVE BEEN BASICALLY IGNORED.
HERE'S AN IDEA IF YOU WANT TO SHOW US APPRECIATION FOR YEARS OF SERVICE, WE'D RATHER HAVE SENIORITY ON TRANSFER PEERS SO WE CAN SECURE POSITIONS BEFORE NEW HIRES AND NOT BE PUSHED OUT OF THE DISTRICT.
THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT IS UNIQUE TO ME.
THIS HAPPENED TO EVERY PERSON I TALKED TO GOING THROUGH THE TRANSFER PERIOD.
I ENDED UP GOING TO THE JOB FAIR, COMPETING WITH NEW HIRES, SOME OF THEM WITH NO EXPERIENCE.
A LOT OF THE POSITIONS I WAS APPLYING TO ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE.
MINIUTE THE TRANSFER PERIOD ENDS TOMORROW.
AS AN EXPERIMENT AND AS A PLAN B THIS YEAR I DECIDED TO APPLY TO MESQUITE ISD, AND EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE GOING THROUGH THE SAME STARR TEST THAT WE ARE, I HAVE I HAVE HAD SIX INTERVIEWS AND THREE JOB OFFERS, INCLUDING ONE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE BILINGUAL DEPARTMENT ITSELF.
IT IS TROUBLING THAT WE ARE ABOUT TO ENTER A TERRIBLE AUSTERITY PERIOD FOR EDUCATION IN THE STATE OF TEXAS, AND THE ISD IS WASTING FINANCIAL AND HUMAN RESOURCES IN HIRING HIGH DEMAND TEACHERS LIKE I AM HAVING TO GO TO MEXICO, SPAIN, OR PUERTO RICO WHERE I COME FROM, ONLY TO LOSE THEM IN A BROKEN TRANSFER PERIOD THAT SHOWS NO REAL LIFE OR PRACTICAL APPRECIATION FOR VETERAN TEACHERS THAT HAVE SERVED THIS DISTRICT FOR A DECADE OR EVEN MORE.
IT FEELS LIKE WE DON'T MATTER, LIKE WE ARE NOT NEEDED, AND IT TELEGRAPHS THAT WE DO NOT WANT VETERAN TEACHERS WITH EXPERIENCE THAT ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING AND CAN HIT THE GROUND RUNNING THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL.
THANK YOU [APPLAUSE]. WOULD THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE JUDITH JUAREZ AND JORGE CASTRO, FOLLOWED BY DANIELLE CURTIS AND OLA ALLEN ON DECK.
DESPITE THE CONSTANT BATTLE THAT KEEPING PUBLIC SCHOOLS FUNDED IS, I WAS ALWAYS PROUD TO SAY THAT I ATTENDED DISD SCHOOLS MY ENTIRE LIFE, BUT THE INCIDENT THAT OCCURRED TWO FRIDAYS AGO AT WILMER-HUTCHINS HIGH SCHOOL WAS UNACCEPTABLE.
WE HAVE TO STOP PRETENDING LIKE GUN VIOLENCE IN SCHOOLS IS NORMAL.
WHEN STUDENTS DECIDED THAT THEY COULD NOT CONTINUE AS IF NOTHING HAD HAPPENED, THEIR TEACHERS SUPPORTED THEM AND GAVE THEM THE SPACE TO DO WHAT THEY NEEDED TO DO IN ORDER TO HEAL. THE REPRESSION THAT HAS BEEN COMING DOWN ON STUDENTS AND TEACHERS SIMPLY ADVOCATING FOR THE DIGNITY OF THEIR LIVES IS JUST PLAIN EVIL.
WE SHOULD BE COMMENDING THOSE TEACHERS FOR NOT CLIPPING THEIR STUDENTS WINGS AND INSTEAD PUTTING THEIR JOBS ON THE LINE TO DO WHAT TEACHERS ARE MEANT TO DO NOT BE SECURITY OFFICERS, BUT TO BE KIND AND UPLIFTING VOICES FOR THE FUTURE OF THIS COUNTRY.
INCREASED POLICE PRESENCE IN SCHOOLS WON'T SOLVE THIS ISSUE OR MAKE THEM FEEL SAFER.
THESE KIDS NEED A SAFE SPACE, COUNSELING, AND COMMUNITY CARE IN ORDER TO MOVE PAST THIS.
THERE ALSO NEEDS TO BE PROPER PROTOCOL IN PLACE FOR THESE DANGEROUS SITUATIONS SO TEACHERS CAN REMAIN INFORMED THROUGH DIRECT LINES OF COMMUNICATION, INSTEAD OF HAVING TO FIND OUT IF THEIR LIVES ARE ON THE LINE THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA.
PUTTING TEACHERS THESE STUDENTS ARE ATTACHED TO AND TRUST ON LEAVE IS THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT'S NEEDED RIGHT NOW, AND IF NOBODY ELSE WILL TELL THEM THIS, I WILL. I'M PROUD AND ADMIRE EVERY SINGLE STUDENT AND TEACHER THAT WALKED OUT THAT FOLLOWING MONDAY.
POWER TO THE STUDENTS, POWER TO THE TEACHERS AND I HOPE THEY MAY FIND PEACE IN THEIR CLASSROOMS ONCE AGAIN AND ARE ABLE TO FINISH THEIR SCHOOL YEAR FEELING HEARD AND SUPPORTED IN THEIR STRUGGLE [APPLAUSE]. THANK YOU.
[00:45:01]
YES, MA'AM. GOOD EVENING.MY NAME IS JORGE CASTRO I'M A ALUMNI FROM PINKSTON HIGH SCHOOL.
I GRADUATED IN 1973 AND HAVE BEEN PARTICIPATING WITH GIVING BACK TO THAT SCHOOL SINCE 1976.
THAT'S A LONG TIME, AND I STILL ADVOCATE FOR OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR SCHOOL.
DALLAS HAS 25 BARBER COLLEGES IN THE METROPLEX THAT OFFER DAY AND EVENING CLASSES AT THE COST OF BETWEEN $2000 TO $7500 PER STUDENT. A BARBER PROGRAM WOULD HELP THE DISTRICT IMMENSELY ON HELPING KEEP OUR BOYS IN SCHOOL.
I ASKED FOR A PROGRAM A FEW YEARS BACK AND I SEE THAT SKYLINE HAS A PROGRAM THIS YEAR.
I JUST NOTICED THAT THIS YEAR.
PLEASE CONSIDER BRINGING THE PROGRAM BACK TO PINKSTON, OR AT LEAST TO THE CAREER INSTITUTE WEST.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH [APPLAUSE].
THANK YOU. WOULD THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
DANIELLE CURTIS AND OLA ALLEN, FOLLOWED BY TOBY COLLINS AND AMY [INAUDIBLE].
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN OF THE BOARD, I STAND HERE AS A PARENT OF A STUDENT CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN WILMER-HUTCHINS HIGH SCHOOL, AT WHICH I AM AN ACTIVE VOLUNTEER AS WELL.
I WANT YOU TO IMAGINE YOUR YOUNGER SELF ATTENDING SCHOOL ON A TYPICAL FRIDAY, SITTING IN CLASS AND ALL IN A MATTER OF SECONDS, YOU HEAR GUNFIRE AND WITNESS A TEACHER ABRUPTLY ENTER YOUR AREA DRENCHED IN BLOOD.
THINK ABOUT HOW TERRIFIED YOU ARE IN THAT MOMENT.
LET'S THINK ABOUT BEING A PARENT AT WORK AND RECEIVING THESE FRANTIC TEXTS.
I'M IN A ROOM LOCKED IN THE DARK.
THIS WAS OUR EXPERIENCE ON FRIDAY, APRIL 12TH AT 10:34 A.M..
NOW IMAGINE YOUR CURRENT SELF AT WORK.
MANY OF YOUR STUDENTS FACE CHALLENGES THAT EVEN ADULTS CANNOT WITHSTAND.
HOUSING CHALLENGES, BUT YOU PRIDE YOURSELF ON BEING A SAFE SPACE FOR YOUR STUDENTS.
NOW, ALL OF A SUDDEN, YOU FIND YOURSELF IN AN ACTIVE SHOOTER SITUATION AT WORK.
WHY IS NO ONE ADDRESSING THE SHOOTING THAT TOOK PLACE ON FRIDAY, APRIL 12TH, PRIOR TO THE CHILDREN RETURNING TO SCHOOL? IT'S NO ONE INTERESTED IN MEETING WITH THE PARENTS.
I KEPT MY CHILD OUT OF SCHOOL INITIALLY ANTICIPATING A MEETING OR AT LEAST AN OFFICIAL UPDATE.
WHAT I DID RECEIVE WAS NOTIFICATION THAT MY CHILD IS BEING MARKED ABSENT AND WOULD NOT BE EXCUSED FOR THE DAYS MISSED IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING A SCHOOL SHOOTING, THAT TEACHER WHO I DESCRIBED EARLIER, WHO HAS POURED INTO MY CHILD AND BEEN A SAFE SPACE FOR HER, WAS RELIEVED OF HER DUTIES AND WALKED OUT ON MONDAY, APRIL 15TH.
SO WE HAVE A SCHOOL SHOOTING, FORCED RETURN TO SCHOOL, OR CONSEQUENCE OF VIOLATION FROM TRUANCY.
THE TEACHER, WHO HAS BEEN PARAMOUNT TO YOUR SUCCESS FOR YOUR WHOLE JUNIOR YEAR IS GONE.
WHAT SECURITY MEASURES HAVE BEEN ADDED? WHY HAS NO ONE COMMUNICATED WITH THE PARENTS? WHY ARE MISS MESSERLY AND MR. DEAN RELIEVED OF TEACHING DUTIES THE DAY AFTER THE SCHOOL SHOOTING HAS TAKEN PLACE? [APPLAUSE] WHY WAS THE SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION OR DISTRICT NOBODY.
WHY HAS NOBODY REACHED OUT TO ME? THIS IS NOT ABOUT SAVING A FACE, AND IT'S NOT.
IT'S ABOUT DOING WHAT'S RIGHT.
IT'S NOT ABOUT TARNISHING THE REPUTATION OF WILMER-HUTCHINS HIGH SCHOOL.
IT'S ABOUT DOING WHAT IS RIGHT.
WHAT WOULD YOUR EXPECTATIONS BE IF THIS WAS YOUR CHILD, OR IF YOU WERE THAT STUDENT, OR IF YOU WERE THE TEACHERS? MISS MESSERLY AND MR. DEAN [APPLAUSE]. THANK YOU.
WOULD THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
OLA ALLEN AND TOBY COLLINS, FOLLOWED BY AMY [INAUDIBLE] AND RYAN MCKELVIE GONZALEZ.
OLA ALLEN. GOOD EVENING, I AM OLA ALLEN, 4111 SUMMIT RIDGE DRIVE, DALLAS, TEXAS.
THIS EVENING I HAVE TWO DEMANDS AND I HAVE ONE REQUEST.
OUR TEACHERS, OUR STAFFS ARE HAVING A TOUGH TIME WITH CELL PHONES.
[00:50:04]
NEED. WE NEED OUR TEACHERS THERE TO TEACH OUR CHILDREN, BUT IN THE MEANTIME, THE TEACHERS ARE NOT GOING TO STAND FOR THE STUDENTS TO TAKE PICTURES AND, AND RECORD EVERYTHING THEY'RE SAYING.SO I'M ASKING YOU GUYS TO SPEND SOME QUANTITY AND QUALITY TIME ON HOW ARE WE GOING TO REGULATE THE CELL PHONES IN THE SCHOOL? MY REQUEST WHEN WE COME DOWN HERE MONTH AFTER MONTH, FOURTH THURSDAY AFTER THE FOURTH THURSDAY, YOU GUYS, WE CRIED OURSELVES TO YOU GUYS.
WE TELL YOU OUR PROBLEMS, WE TRY TO EXPLAIN WHAT'S GOING ON.
SOME OF YOU GUYS LEAVE OUT SOME OF YOU ON YOUR CELL PHONE.
IT'S NOT FAIR TO US WHEN WE COME DOWN HERE TO TRY TO TELL YOU GUYS WHAT'S GOING ON.
WE EXPECT YOU GUYS TO LISTEN TO US AND TO HEAR OUR CRIES, AND NOT ONLY THAT, YOU SHOULD HAVE SOMEONE LINED UP HERE TO TAKE US TO ANOTHER LITTLE ROOM OR TO PULL US ON THE OUTSIDE, A STAFF MEMBER.
EXPLAIN TO US, AND IF THEY'RE NOT ABLE TO HELP US, THEY CAN GIVE US SOME DIRECTION.
THEY CAN TAKE OUR NUMBERS OR WE CAN TAKE THEIR NUMBERS.
THIS IS NOT THE WAY THINGS SHOULD BE.
WE HAD A PROGRAM LIKE THIS ABOUT 12 YEARS AGO.
WHEN YOU COME DOWN, SOMEONE LISTEN TO YOU.
WE LEAVE HERE WORSE THAN WE CAME IN.
WE VOTED ON YOU GUYS [APPLAUSE].
SO WE ARE ASKING YOU GUYS TO RETHINK YOUR WAYS OF GETTING TO US.
THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE] WILL THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
TOBY COLLINS AND AMY [INAUDIBLE] FOLLOWED BY RYAN MCKELVIE GONZALEZ AND ALBERT MEJIA ON DECK.
GOOD EVENING TRUSTEES SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS.
I AM A FORMER STUDENT OF WILMER-HUTCHINS HIGH SCHOOL.
APRIL 12TH, 2024 WILL BE A DAY THAT WE WILL LIVE IN INFAMY IN DALLAS COUNTY, TEXAS BECAUSE NUMBER ONE, THE PERSON WHO CAME TO THE SCHOOL BROUGHT THE GUN ALL WEEK, NUMBER ONE, AND THEY DID NOTHING ABOUT IT.
BEFORE THAT FRIDAY MORNING WHEN IT HAPPENED.
NUMBER THREE, IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO CHECK BAGS, DON'T DO YOUR JOB AT ALL, BECAUSE WHAT WERE YOU HIRED FOR IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO DO YOUR JOB? NUMBER FOUR, AND THIS HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION, MAY I REMIND YOU, I GRADUATED LAST YEAR.
I HAVE TALKED TO SENIORS WHO ARE MY FRIENDS NOW, WHO ARE SENIORS NOW, AND HAVE SAID THAT WHEN THEY PROTESTED THAT PAST WEEK, IF THEY PROTEST AGAIN, THEIR SENIOR, THEIR SENIOR ACTIVITIES WILL BE CANCELED AND THEIR MONEY WILL NOT BE REFUNDED.
SO HOW CAN YOU TELL SOMEONE FOR FOR STANDING UP FOR WHAT THEY BELIEVE IN? BECAUSE BY THE CONSTITUTION WE ARE PROTECTED BY FREE SPEECH.
FREE SPEECH, AM I RIGHT? BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, WHEN THE TRUTH IS ABOUT WHEN THE TRUTH IS COMING OUT, THAT'S WHEN THEY LIKE TO SAY, OH, HUSH, HUSH, HUSH, HUSH, HUSH.
BECAUSE THE TRUTH IS COMING OUT LIKE THE BIBLE SAY WHATEVER'S IN THE DARK MUST COME TO THE LIGHT.
NUMBER ONE, NUMBER TWO, NUMBER TWO.
THE ADMINISTRATION AT WILMER-HUTCHINS HIGH SCHOOL.
THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THE KIDS, BECAUSE IF THEY DID, THEY WOULD HAVE CALLED THE PARENTS AND LET THE PARENTS KNOW THEY WOULD HAVE CLOSED SCHOOL THAT THAT FOLLOWING MONDAY THE WHOLE WEEK TO PREPARE TO, TO RESET, TO, TO REVITALIZE, TO RE STRATEGIZE EVERYTHING ELSE.
SO IF THEY'RE NOT FOLLOWING FOLLOWING WHAT THE BOARD SAY IT'S BECAUSE THE BOARD MAKES THE POLICY FOR THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, AM I RIGHT? RIGHT. SO IF THE PRINCIPAL IS NOT FOLLOWING WHAT THE BOARD HAS GAVE THE INSTRUCTION, THAT MEANS THAT SOMEBODY NEEDS TO GO.
BECAUSE IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO DO YOUR JOB, LIKE I SAID, DON'T DO IT AT ALL.
EITHER YOU DO IT OR YOU DON'T DO IT.
Y'ALL WERE NOT APPOINTED, VOTED, AND THIS IS AN ELECTION YEAR.
SOME OF YOU ARE UP FOR REELECTION.
SO I SUGGEST TO YOU, YOU EITHER DO YOUR JOB NOW OR YOU WILL COME IN NOVEMBER 2024 WILL BE VOTED OUT.
[APPLAUSE] THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
[00:55:02]
WOULD THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE, AMY [INAUDIBLE] NOT PRESENT.GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS RYAN MCKELVIE GONZALEZ.
I'M A TEACHER AT SUNSET HIGH SCHOOL.
THE TEI SCORECARD IS SUPPOSED TO SERVE AS A FRAMEWORK FOR EVALUATING THE PERFORMANCE OF EDUCATIONAL STAFF, BUT MUCH OF WHAT MAKES UP OUR SCORECARD IS OUT OF OUR CONTROL AND NOT DIRECTLY CREATED CONNECTED TO OUR SUPPOSED TEACHING EXCELLENCE.
THE FIRST COMPONENT OF TEI IS TEACHER PERFORMANCE.
THIS IS THE SECTION THAT'S BASED ON SPOT EXTENDED AND SUMMATIVE EVALUATIONS BY OUR ADMINISTRATOR.
THIS IS THE LARGEST CATEGORY AND RELIES ON ADMIN COMING INTO OUR CLASS TO WATCH US TEACH.
THOSE EVALUATIONS MAKE UP 50 TO 80% OF OUR SCORECARD.
THAT MEANS OUR GRADE AS A TEACHER COMES FROM ONLY 0.2% OF OUR ACTUAL TIME SPENT WORKING.
NOW, I CONSIDER MYSELF EXTREMELY FORTUNATE TO HAVE THE ADMINISTRATOR I DO.
I KNOW MANY FELLOW EDUCATORS WHO ARE NOT SO FORTUNATE.
THE NEXT COMPONENT IS STUDENT EXPERIENCE, ALSO KNOWN AS STUDENT SURVEYS.
WHILE IF STUDENTS OPINIONS ARE IMPORTANT AND SOMETHING WE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED WHEN MEASURING TEACHER PERFORMANCE, THE SURVEYS ALSO MAKE GREAT ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT THE EQUITY OF OUR SITUATIONS.
AT MOST, STUDENT SURVEYS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED AS PART OF THE SUMMATIVE REVIEW.
THE FINAL COMPONENT, STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT, IS ALSO INCREDIBLY ARBITRARY.
THE STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVE OR THE SLO IS NOTHING BUT A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME.
IT'S JUST EXTRA WORK PLACED ON TEACHERS WHO ALREADY HAVE STUDENT TEST SCORES BUILT INTO THIS COMPONENT, LIKE THE ACP AND THE ACPS ARE JUST ANOTHER TEST. NOT OF WHAT A STUDENT HAS LEARNED, BUT HOW WELL THEY TAKE A TEST.
TEI DOES NOT HELP WITH TEACHER RETENTION, NOR DOES IT INCENTIVIZE TEACHERS TO MOVE TO DALLAS ISD.
THE THINGS THAT DO INCREASE THE TEACHERS DESIRE TO STAY ARE A SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY THAT VALUES LEARNING, COOPERATION WITH FELLOW TEACHERS, AND THE FEELING THAT THEY ARE SUPPORTED. ALL THINGS THAT ARE HURT BY OUR CURRENT COMPENSATION SYSTEM.
[APPLAUSE] WOULD THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
ALBERT MEJIA AND BIANCA GUERRA CONTRERAS, FOLLOWED BY JAE NAM AND JACOB FRANKLIN ON DECK.
ALBERT MEJIA NOT PRESENT, BIANCA GUERRA CONTRERAS, FOLLOWED BY JAE NAM, JACOB FRANKLIN AND ROSEMARY KURTZ ON DECK. HI, MY NAME IS BIANCA GUERRA CONTRERAS I AM A THIRD YEAR MEXICAN AMERICAN US CITIZEN.
I AM ALSO A THIRD YEAR GENERATION DISD ATTENDEE.
I AM HERE ON BEHALF OF MY SON IN REGARDS TO SPECIAL NEEDS, BUT ALSO HERE FOR ALL BROWN AND S TUDENTS ALIKE.
DISD DEMOGRAPHICS IS PRIMARILY COMPRISED OF OUR BROWN SKINNED FAMILIES.
IN OUR LOW INCOME FAMILIES, WE ARE ALREADY DEALING WITH BROKEN HOMES.
WE ARE ALREADY SUBJECTED TO THE THOUGHT OF BOYS DON'T CRY BECAUSE IT IS SEEN AS A WEAKNESS.
WHEN BOYS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO CRY, AND GIRLS AS WELL, IF I MAY INSIST WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PROCESS OUR EMOTIONS AND SO NOT DOING SO IT ALSO IN PROCESS.
I'M SORRY. UNABLE TO PROCESS OUR EMOTIONS AND NOT BEING ABLE TO DO SO IS IN AN EFFORT OF NOT ALLOWING US TO BE HUMAN BEINGS, NOT BEING ABLE TO CRY.
THE SIMPLE PROCESS OF CRYING ALLOWS US TO THINK AND DULLS THE PAIN.
SO WHEN YOU DO NOT ALLOW US TO SIMPLY FEEL OUR EMOTIONS AND PROCESS WHAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN ORDER TO
[01:00:07]
THINK CONSTRUCTIVELY WE ARE THEN RESORTING TO OUR FLIGHT OR FIGHT RESPONSE AND A DYSREGULATED NERVOUS SYSTEM.WITHIN OUR LOW INCOME COMMUNITIES, WE ARE DEALING WITH ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES WITH THOSE EXPERIENCES IN REGARDS TO ABUSE, NEGLECT AND HOUSEHOLD CHALLENGES.
THE MORE TRAUMA THAT A CHILD SUSTAINS WILL INCREASE THE CHILD'S BRAIN DEVELOPMENT TO REACT TO STRESS IN A MORE ABNORMAL STAGE.
VIOLENCE IN THE COMMUNITY AND DYSREGULATED NERVOUS SYSTEMS ARE HAND IN HAND.
WHEN YOU THINK OF SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING AND THE FACT THAT SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING STOPS IN THE PRIMARY STAGES AND DOES NOT CONTINUE INTO SECONDARY EDUCATION, I MAY ASK, WHY IS THAT A FACT WHEN ADOLESCENT BRAINS WE ALL KNOW, ARE MORE EMOTIONAL AND REACTIVE VERSUS THE MATURED ADULT BRAIN.
SO THAT LEADS ME INTO OUR MENTAL HEALTH OF OUR STAFF WITHIN DISD.
WHY IS IT THAT OUR CHILDREN ARE HELD TO MORE ACCOUNTABILITY IN REGARDS TO THEIR EMOTIONS? THANK YOU, MISS CONTRERAS YOUR TIME HAS EXPIRED [APPLAUSE].
WOULD THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
JAE NAM AND JACOB FRANKLIN, FOLLOWED BY ROSEMARY KURTZ AND SARAH SAHARA KHAN ON DECK.
GOOD EVENING, SUPERINTENDENT AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
MY NAME IS JAY, AND I'M A TEACHER AND AN AFT MEMBER FROM A NEIGHBORING SCHOOL DISTRICT.
A SCHOOL SHOOTING IS THE LAST THING ANY TEACHER, ADMINISTRATOR, OR STUDENT WANTS TO DEAL WITH, AND I CAN'T IMAGINE THE STRESS THAT WILMER-HUTCHINS ADMINISTRATION MUST HAVE BEEN UNDER, BUT TEACHERS AND STUDENTS TOO, WERE UNDER IMMENSE STRESS THAT THEY HAD TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS HAPPENING FROM SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS.
FOR TEACHERS TO NOT RECEIVE COMMUNICATION DURING THE EVENT UNTIL MUCH LATER IS VERY CONCERNING, BECAUSE IT LEAVES CONFUSED STUDENTS AND TEACHERS PIECING TOGETHER A NARRATIVE FROM POSTS THAT MAY NOT EVEN BE TRUE.
HE MADE SURE HIS STUDENTS WHO WERE WALKING OUT STAY SAFE AND REMAINED PEACEFUL.
HE ACTED IN THEIR INTEREST AND ALLOWED THEM TO PROCESS THEIR TRAUMA FROM THE EVENT.
ULTIMATELY, DISCIPLINING A TEACHER VIA TERMINATION WILL NOT MAKE WILMER-HUTCHINS OR ANY SCHOOL SAFER, BUT WHAT DOES MAKE SCHOOLS SAFER IS EASILY ACCESSIBLE MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AND COUNSELORS, AND INVESTMENTS IN THEIR LEARNING CONDITIONS.
ALL DALLAS ISD SCHOOLS NEED TO FOCUS ON FUNDING THESE ITEMS FULLY.
THANK YOU [APPLAUSE]. WOULD THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
JACOB FRANKLIN AND ROSEMARY KURTZ, FOLLOWED BY SAHARA KHAN AND BRENDA GURUMURTHY ON DECK.
I'M JACOB WITH THE PARTY FOR SOCIALISM AND LIBERATION.
OUR SCHOOLS WILL NOT BECOME SAFE UNTIL WE ACKNOWLEDGE SOME INCONVENIENT FACTS.
OUR TEACHERS AND STAFF DON'T GET PAID NEARLY ENOUGH TO KEEP UP WITH INFLATION.
OUR STUDENTS ARE WASTING TIME ON NUMEROUS STANDARDIZED TESTS INSTEAD OF LEARNING.
INSTEAD OF ADDRESSING THESE ISSUES, YOU'VE ATTEMPTED TO SWEEP THEM UNDER THE RUG.
[01:05:01]
INSTEAD OF SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS, YOU HAVE RETALIATED AGAINST THEM.BAND-AID SOLUTIONS LIKE CENSORSHIP AND OVER POLICING ARE UNACCEPTABLE.
THE GOAL IS NOT TO INTERCEPT SHOOTERS AFTER THEY'VE ALREADY BEGUN KILLING.
THE GOAL IS TO STOP SHOOTINGS FROM EVER STARTING IN THE FIRST PLACE.
LISTEN TO THE DEMANDS OF YOUR CONSTITUENTS.
WE WANT OUR SCHOOLS TO BE SAFE AND WE ARE TELLING YOU HOW TO DO IT [APPLAUSE].
THANK YOU WOULD THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
ROSEMARY KURTZ AND SAHARA KHAN, FOLLOWED BY BRENDA GURUMURTHY.
GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS ROSIE I'M A HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER IN DALLAS ISD AND A MEMBER OF ALLIANCE AFT.
THIS IS HOW WE FIGURE OUT WHICH ISSUES ARE REALLY SYSTEMIC, WHICH ISSUES ARE BEING VERY BROADLY FELT, AND WHICH ONES ARE TEACHERS AND STAFF CARE THE MOST ABOUT, BUT SOMETIMES WHEN WE SPEAK AT SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS ABOUT THESE ISSUES, IT SEEMS LIKE THERE'S SOMEONE LISTENING TO US FROM CENTRAL STAFF WHO DOESN'T REALLY GET THIS.
SOMEONE KEEPS TRYING TO FIX OUR ISSUES AS IF THEY ARE PERSONAL ISSUES RATHER THAN SYSTEMIC ISSUES.
I'M NOT SURE WHERE THIS CONFUSION IS COMING FROM.
YOU KNOW THAT WHEN OUR PRESIDENT SPEAKS TO YOU, SHE'S NOT TALKING ABOUT HER OWN PERSONAL ISSUES SINCE SHE'S NO LONGER AN EMPLOYEE OF DISD, AND YOU GOT TO REALIZE THAT THE REST OF US AREN'T TALKING ABOUT OUR OWN PERSONAL ISSUES EITHER.
WE'RE SPEAKING UP FOR OUR UNION SIBLINGS AND EVEN THOSE THAT HAVEN'T JOINED THE UNION YET.
A YEAR AGO, ONE YEAR AGO, AT THE APRIL 2023 SCHOOL BOARD MEETING, I GAVE A SPEECH WHERE I HIGHLIGHTED THE UNION'S RESPECT EQUITY, DIGNITY CAMPAIGN DEMAND FOR THERE TO BE CONSEQUENCES FOR ADMINISTRATORS WHO REPEATEDLY VIOLATE TEACHERS RIGHT TO DUTY FREE LUNCH AND PLANNING TIME.
THE NEXT DAY, MY PRINCIPAL GOT A CALL THAT I WAS HAVING MY DUTY FREE TIME TAKEN.
I AM A UNION ACTIVIST, AND UNION ACTIVISTS OFTEN FIGHT FOR OTHERS BESIDES THEMSELVES.
AS FAR AS I KNOW, MY SCHOOL HASN'T HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH TEACHERS NOT GETTING THEIR DUTY FREE TIME.
I WOULDN'T NEED TO BRING IT TO THE SCHOOL BOARD IN A MONTHLY MEETING.
SO NOW I'M HAVING TO DO A RETEACH.
LAST MONTH, SEVERAL OTHER UNION ACTIVISTS FROM A SCHOOL SPOKE ON DISTRICT WIDE CONCERNS, ONLY TO FIND THAT THEIR PRINCIPAL HAD BEEN CALLED ABOUT THEIR CONCERNS, NONE OF WHICH WERE THINGS HE HAD ANYTHING ANY CONTROL OVER.
IF WE HAVE PROBLEMS, WE KNOW THE UNION WILL HELP US.
WE'RE HERE TONIGHT AND EVERY MONTH TO ADVOCATE FOR DISTRICT WIDE CHANGE THAT NEEDS TO HAPPEN.
MAYBE YOU REALLY DO WANT TO HELP, BUT WHEN OUR PRINCIPALS GET CALLED FOR DISTRICT WIDE CONCERNS, IT JUST FEELS LIKE EITHER WE'RE NOT REALLY BEING LISTENED TO OR THE DISTRICT IS TRYING TO BLAME OUR ADMINISTRATORS RATHER THAN TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE PROBLEMS THEY CAUSE THEMSELVES.
WE WANT TO WORK WITH YOU AS A TEAM TO MAKE OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT BETTER.
WE ARE DOING YOU A FAVOR BY BRINGING TO YOU CONCERNS THAT WE HAVE FOUND THROUGH OUR COLLECTIVE GROUP ARE IMPORTANT TO OUR TO OUR STAFF, BUT IT'S HARD WHEN IT FEELS LIKE YOU ONLY SEE US AS INDIVIDUALS WITH INDIVIDUAL COMPLAINTS, RATHER THAN AS A COLLECTIVE REPRESENTING THOUSANDS OF YOUR EMPLOYEES.
THANK YOU [APPLAUSE]. THANK YOU WOULD THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
SARAH SAHARA KHAN, FOLLOWED BY BRENDA GURUMURTHY.
SAHARA. HI, MY NAME IS SAHARA KHAN AND ALTHOUGH I AM A MEMBER OF ALLIANCE AFT, TODAY I AM SPEAKING AS A DISD TEACHER AND CONCERNED COMMUNITY MEMBER BECAUSE THIS ISSUE IS DEEPLY AND BROADLY FELT.
AFTER HEARING ABOUT THE VIOLENCE ON WILMER-HUTCHINS CAMPUS, IT BROUGHT BACK ALL THE PAIN AND PANIC OF LIVING IN VIOLENCE EVERY DAY AT A PREVIOUS DISD TEACHING ASSIGNMENT I HAD, I STAND WITH THE TEACHERS AND STUDENTS WHO BRAVELY WALKED OUT TO SPEAK OUT AGAINST INJUSTICE IN OUR COMMUNITIES BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH I FEEL SAFE AT MY CURRENT CAMPUS NOW, I DEEPLY KNOW THAT THIS COULD HAVE BEEN ANY OF US.
ON MY PREVIOUS CAMPUS, THERE WERE COUNTLESS SCHOOL SHOOTING THREATS AND LOCKDOWNS.
STUDENTS WERE DISMISSED ROOM BY ROOM AND HALLWAY TRANSITIONS IN SINGLE FILE LINES.
AT WORST, IT DRAINED OUR SCHOOLS OF COLOR, PURPOSE AND JOY.
[01:10:01]
FIGHTS, LOWER CLASSROOM ACHIEVEMENT AND ATTENDANCE, AND LOWER STAFF RETENTION.DISAPPOINTINGLY, IT ALSO DID NOT STOP THE SHOOTING, THREATS OR LOCKDOWNS.
SO PLEASE, AS YOU GO FORWARD IN ADDRESSING THE ISSUE AT WILMER-HUTCHINS, DO NOT DO THIS AND DO NOT USE THIS AS AN EXCUSE TO INCREASE POLICING, SURVEILLANCE OR OTHER POLICIES THAT WE ALREADY KNOW MAKE STUDENTS OF COLOR FEEL LESS SAFE IN A LESS TRUSTING SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT.
BECAUSE LOW INCOME NEIGHBORHOODS LACK THE RESOURCES TO ENSURE FOOD AND HOUSING SECURITY FOR OUR CHILDREN ADDING THREATS OF VIOLENCE TO ONE OF THEIR OBSTACLES TO AN EMPOWERING EDUCATION IS A CLASS ISSUE.
WE NEED TO VERIFY OUR SCHOOLS ARE MEETING SAFETY REQUIREMENTS FOR LOCKDOWN DRILLS AND SETTLE FOR NOTHING LESS THAN ADEQUATE STAFFING, BUT WE ALSO NEED TO REMEMBER THESE ARE BARE MINIMUMS THAT WON'T ADDRESS THE INEQUITIES CREATED IN THE FIRST PLACE BY SYSTEMIC VIOLENCE, BUT AS OUR MODIFIED LOCKDOWN PROVES, SURVEILLANCE KILLS LEARNING BECAUSE IT KILLS TRUST. WHAT I'M ASKING THE SCHOOL BOARD TO DO IS RADICALLY REIMAGINE THE DISTRICT'S ROLE IN IMPLEMENTING CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE MEASURES THAT MITIGATE COMMUNITY ACCESS AND MOTIVES FOR VIOLENCE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
WHAT IF WE ALLOCATE MONEY TO JOIN NATIONAL CAMPAIGNS FOR TIGHTER FIREARM REGULATIONS IN THIS COUNTRY? WHAT IF SCHOOLS WERE HUBS FOR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT ARE OFFERING WRAPAROUND SERVICES TO FILL HISTORICAL GAPS CREATED BY LEFT BY RACIAL VIOLENCE.
WHAT IF WE DIDN'T JUST RELY ON SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS TO PROVIDE SCHOOL SAFETY? AND WHAT IF WE ALLOWED TEACHERS AND STAFF TO FORM STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITH STUDENTS AND PARENTS OVER COMMUNITY PROJECTS FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY, INSTEAD OF BEING THE SITE OF SYSTEMIC TRAUMA? THANK YOU.
[APPLAUSE] THANK YOU. WOULD OUR LAST SPEAKER, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
HI, I'M AN DALLAS ISD TEACHER AND MEMBER OF THE ALLIANCE AFT.
THE DISTRICT MUST CONVENE A COMMITTEE, INCLUDING TEACHERS, TO REVIEW THE CURRENT TEI COMPENSATION SYSTEM AND DETERMINE A FAIR WAY TO COMPENSATE TEACHERS, REGARDLESS OF THEIR YEARS OF EXPERIENCE OR THE SUBJECT THAT THEY TEACH.
SO INITIALLY DTR SOUNDED APPEALING.
GETTING DTR STATUS IS THE ONLY WAY YOUR SALARY CAN INCREASE PAST THE PROFICIENT TWO SALARY OF AROUND $71,000, THERE IS A SCORE THRESHOLD YOU MUST PASS EVEN TO APPLY, AND THAT'S THE FIRST HOOP TO JUMP THROUGH.
SO YOU NEED TO SPEND ALL YOUR TIME ACTIVE IN CAMPUS OR DISTRICT ACTIVITIES READING, EDUCATION, LITERATURE, AND PRESENTING AT CONFERENCES ABOUT PEDAGOGY, AND YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU'RE OBSESSIVELY DOCUMENTING YOURSELF DOING ALL OF THESE THINGS.
I ACTUALLY DO LIKE TO READ RESEARCH PAPERS AND BOOKS ABOUT EDUCATION, BUT I HAVEN'T REALLY BEEN METICULOUSLY KEEPING TRACK OF EVERYONE THAT I READ, SO I DON'T KNOW IF IT COUNTS. I ALSO FOUND OUT THAT MY MASTER'S DEGREE DOESN'T COUNT FOR ANYTHING IN REGARD TO LIFELONG LEARNING, EVEN THOUGH IT IS OSTENSIBLY LEARNING, RIGHT? BECAUSE IT DIDN'T HAPPEN WITHIN THE PAST THREE YEARS.
I DO THINK IT'S GREAT TO COMPENSATE TEACHERS FOR EXTRA DUTIES PERFORMED, AND WE SHOULD ENCOURAGE TEACHERS TO SEEK OUT RESEARCH ON BEST EDUCATIONAL PRACTICES AND SHARE IT WITH OTHERS, BUT I DON'T LIKE THE CULTURE OF OVERWORK THAT THIS REINFORCES.
A TEACHER SHOULDN'T HAVE TO OVERWORK HERSELF OR DEDICATE HER WHOLE LIFE TO TEACHING IN ORDER TO AVOID PAY STAGNATION, DOING A GOOD JOB IN THE CLASSROOM AND STAYING IN THE CLASSROOM IN THE ERA OF A TEACHER SHORTAGE AND DECLINING ENROLLMENT IN EDUCATOR PREPARATION PROGRAMS SHOULD BE MORE THAN ENOUGH.
WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO PAY ALL TEACHERS SOFTWARE ENGINEER SALARIES YET, AT LEAST UNTIL PEOPLE START LIKING PAYING TAXES, BUT WE CAN AT LEAST COMPENSATE RETURNING TEACHERS FAIRLY FOR CONTINUING TO BE IN THE CLASSROOM AND GIVING THEIR BEST TO OUR KIDS.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU, MR. PRESIDENT. THIS CONCLUDES OUR SPEAKERS.
THANK YOU TO ALL THE SPEAKERS THIS EVENING.
WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE THROUGH THE AGENDA.
[01:15:02]
WE'RE GOING TO GO BACK TO OUR CLOSED SESSION ITEM TRUSTEES.[4. CLOSED SESSION - The Board will retire to closed session pursuant to Texas Government Code Section 551 concerning the following sections:]

TRUSTEES NOW, GOING TO BEGIN WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT.
[5. REPORTS]
LET ME JUST CONFIRM.OKAY. THERE WE GO. I WANTED TO MAKE SURE WE WERE.
SO I'D LIKE TO TAKE A FEW MOMENTS TO TALK ABOUT SOME ACCOLADES.
FIRST BUS DRIVER APPRECIATION DAY, APRIL 23RD WAS BUS DRIVER APPRECIATION DAY.
LISTEN TO THIS. OUR BUS DRIVERS HAVE DRIVEN MORE THAN 9 MILLION MILES THIS YEAR AND TAKEN STUDENTS ON ALMOST 15,000 FIELD TRIPS TO ENRICH THEIR LEARNING AND TO PARTICIPATE IN ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES.
THANK YOU TO THESE DEDICATED BUS DRIVERS WHO SAFELY TRANSPORT OUR STUDENTS AND DO SO MUCH MORE.
I ALWAYS LIKE TO SAY THAT BUS DRIVERS ARE A STUDENT'S VERY FIRST AND LAST TEACHERS OF THE DAY.
YOU MAKE A TREMENDOUS DIFFERENCE.
EARLIER THIS MONTH, DURING ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS WEEK, WE CELEBRATED ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS WITH A VOTE FOR THE FAVORITE ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS AND OTHER EVENTS. I WAS ONCE AN ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL IN SAN ANTONIO AND LEARNED A LOT IN THAT ROLE.
THANK YOU TO OUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS FOR ALL THEY DO.
THERE'S A LOT TO CELEBRATE DURING APRIL, AND ONE OF THOSE CELEBRATIONS IS SCHOOL LIBRARIAN DAY.
LIBRARIES ARE NOT JUST SOURCES OF KNOWLEDGE AND BOOKS.
[01:20:01]
AND ABOUT THEMSELVES.VOLUNTEERS ARE SO IMPORTANT TO US AT DALLAS ISD.
THINK OF THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES THAT ENRICH OUR STUDENTS LIVES.
ALL PRO DADS, BOOK BUDDIES, AND THE ALWAYS POPULAR MLK ORATORY COMPETITION, AND I'M NOT SURE THERE'S A MORE EFFECTIVE PROGRAM AT BUILDING ALLIES TO DALLAS ISD THAN OUR PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY PROGRAM.
SO THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR VOLUNTEERS FOR DONATING YOUR TIME AND EXPERTISE, AND KUDOS TO OUR OWN CHIEF JOHN DELANDER, FOR LEADING THIS WORK.
THE PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR WINNERS WERE ALICIA IWASKO OF ANNIE WEBB BLANTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, DAVID LEE OF HECTOR GARCIA MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND DEREK THOMAS OF SOLAR PREPARATORY FOR BOYS AT JOHN F KENNEDY, AND OUR TEACHER OF THE YEAR WINNERS WERE CHANTRELLE LOVETT ANDREWS OF UMPHREY LEE, CRISTIAN GALLARDO OF SAM TASBY MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND AMANDA ASHMEAD, WHO TEACHES AT THE SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING AT YVONNE EWELL TOWNVIEW CENTER.
I WAS PARTICULARLY MOVED BY ASHMEAD'S REMARKS ABOUT THE JOYS OF TEACHING AND HOW SHE WOULD ENCOURAGE MORE TO ENTER THE PROFESSION, AND SHE SAID IN CONCLUDING HER ACCEPTANCE SPEECH, COME IT'S FUN.
I'D ALSO LIKE TO OFFER THANKS TO OUR PARTNER SPONSORS, THE DALLAS EDUCATION FOUNDATION, LINEBARGER ATTORNEYS AT LAW AND RELIANT, AND OF COURSE, KUDOS TO CHIEFS ROBERT ABEL AND TIFFANY HEWITT, AS WELL AS DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT BRIAN LUSK FOR LEADING THE SELECTION PROCESS FOR THE PRINCIPALS AND TEACHERS OF THE YEAR, AS WELL AS TO CHIEF LIBBY DANIELS, WHOSE COMMUNICATION SERVICES DEPARTMENT ONCE AGAIN PUT ON A TRULY SPECTACULAR EVENT.
AFTER SPEAKING AND SPEAKING OF RELIANT, REPRESENTATIVES FROM RELIANT ENERGY PRESENTED DALLAS ISD'S ENERGY AND SUSTAINABILITY DEPARTMENT WITH A $64,000 CHECK TO SUPPORT THE DISTRICT'S ONGOING EFFORTS OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY.
RELIANCE STARTED A PROGRAM IN 2023 CALLED RESPONSIVE ECONOMIC DISPATCH, OR RED, AND WHEN THE ELECTRIC RELIABILITY COUNCIL OF TEXAS ERCOT GRID IS PEAKING HIGH, IT'S AN INCENTIVE TO REDUCE ENERGY DURING PEAK PERIODS.
RELIANT ENERGY RELIANT ENERGY'S REPRESENTATIVE, JEFF BETTISON, SAYS WHEN THE DISTRICT REDUCES DURING PEAK PERIODS, IT REDUCES BY 20MW. KUDOS TO CHIEF DAVID BATES FOR LEADING THIS WORK ON OUR BEHALF.
ALEXIA STEIN AND CAROLINE CARTER WERE INCLUDED IN THIS PRESTIGIOUS GROUP BECAUSE OF THEIR GRADES, THEIR VOLUNTEER HOURS, AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALEXIA AND CAROLINE, AS WELL AS THEIR SPONSOR IN THE GLOBAL YOUNG LEADERS PROGRAM, HILLCREST TEACHER ANA ANNA MARIE SIFFORD. WELL DONE ALL AROUND.
OUR TEAM MEMBERS AT THE WELCOME CENTER AND EMPLOYEES HAVE REGISTERED MORE THAN I SEE A DIFFERENT SLIDE THAN I WAS EXPECTING. LET'S SEE.
OUR TEAM MEMBERS AT THE WELCOME CENTER EMPLOYEES HAVE REGISTERED MORE THAN 7000 STUDENTS FROM 76 COUNTRIES, SPEAKING MORE THAN 36 LANGUAGES JUST THIS SCHOOL YEAR.
THEY ALSO OFFER PARENT ORIENTATION, LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY TESTING AND HEALTH SCREENINGS, AND AS OF LAST WEEK, THE WELCOME CENTER OFFERS SOMETHING NEW; CHILDREN'S BOOKS IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGES.
THANK YOU TO THE DALLAS EDUCATION FOUNDATION AND SUPERIOR TEXT FOR MAKING SURE THE VENDING MACHINE WILL BE FULLY STOCKED WITH MULTILINGUAL TITLES AVAILABLE TO ALL WHO VISIT THE WELCOME CENTER, AND ON A PERSONAL NOTE, AS SOMEONE FOR WHOM ENGLISH IS A SECOND LANGUAGE, I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO OFFER BOOKS IN MANY LANGUAGES.
[01:25:07]
UNDERSTAND THE WORLD.OUR JOB AS EDUCATORS IS TO GIVE ALL OUR STUDENTS THAT POWER, AND NOW WE THESE KIDDOS WITH THESE KIDDOS, THEY WILL BE ABLE TO LEARN THE SKILL WITH THEIR PARENTS AT HOME IN THEIR NATIVE LANGUAGES.
THIS IS REALLY GREAT STUFF, AND LASTLY, EARLY VOTING FOR THE MAY 4TH ELECTIONS IS UNDERWAY.
VOTING IS A DUTY WE ALL SHARE IN A DEMOCRACY, BUT THE ELECTION HAS SPECIAL MEANING FOR ME BECAUSE VOTERS IN TWO DISTRICTS WILL BE PICKING TWO ADDITIONAL BOSSES FOR ME PERSONALLY, AND AS MUCH AS I SINCERELY REGRET THE IMMINENT DEPARTURES OF TRUSTEES EDWIN FLORES AND JUSTIN HENRY, I EAGERLY ANTICIPATE FINDING OUT WHO THE VOTERS SEND TO REPLACE THEM ON THE DAIS.
AS AUTHOR SHARON SALZBERG SAID, VOTING IS THE EXPRESSION OF OUR COMMITMENT TO OURSELVES, TO ONE ANOTHER, THIS COUNTRY AND TO THE WORLD.
THANK YOU DR. ELIZALDE I FORGOT TO ASK EARLIER IF THERE WAS ANY TRUSTEE COMMITTEE REPORT.
CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE ATHLETES AND COACHES E.D.
WALKER MIDDLE SCHOOL FOR MAKING HISTORY IN GIRLS SPORTS.
KUDOS ALSO TO THE [INAUDIBLE] HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL TEAM FOR WINNING THE 2024 DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP.
WAY TO GO! FINALLY, I ALSO WANT TO THANK AND CELEBRATE ALL TEACHERS IN DISTRICT ONE AND ACROSS DALLAS ISD FOR MAKING THIS MONTH'S SOLAR ECLIPSE AN AMAZING LEARNING OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL STUDENTS. THIS IS SURELY A LESSON THAT THEY WILL NEVER FORGET, AND THAT'S THE DISTRICT ONE REPORT.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU TRUSTEE FLORES.
THAT SOLAR ECLIPSE REALLY WAS SOMETHING ELSE, WASN'T IT? IN DISTRICT TWO, I'D LIKE TO EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO THE THREE NEW HILLCREST HIGH SCHOOL COACHES.
VOLLEYBALL COACH KENZIE PALMER.
ATHLETIC DIRECTOR KEELIN JONES.
THE NEW HEAD FOOTBALL COACH, AD MADIS.
I KNOW YOU WILL REPRESENT D2 WELL.
ANOTHER CONGRATULATIONS TO HILLCREST HIGH SCHOOL LADIES GOLF.
THEY EARNED SECOND PLACE IN THE UIL 11 5A AND ARE ON THEIR WAY TO REGIONALS.
THEY'LL BE ADVANCING TO THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP.
THANK YOU TO THE AMAZING SUDIE WILLIAMS TALENTED AND GIFTED ACADEMY LIBRARIAN AMY GARNICA FOR SHARING HER SUPERPOWERS AT THE LIBRARY ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE, AND FINALLY, CONGRATS TO THE 66 LIONS FROM SUDIE WILLIAMS TALENTED AND GIFTED ACADEMY FOR COMPETING IN THE TEXAS MATH AND SCIENCE COACHES ASSOCIATION STATE COMPETITION IN MY HOMETOWN, SAN ANTONIO.
THAT CONCLUDES DISTRICT TWO'S KUDOS AND ACCOLADES FOR THIS MONTH.
I'LL REPORT THE DISTRICT THREE ACCOLADES.

GENERAL OPERATING SPECIAL REVENUE BOND FUNDS.
CONSENT ITEM 9.08 PULLED BY TRUSTEE FOREMAN, JOHNSON AND WHITE.
DO I HAVE A MOTION? MOVE TO APPROVE.
SECOND. MOTION BY TRUSTEE FLORES.
SECOND BY TRUSTEE CARREÓN TRUSTEES IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? I THOUGHT. THOUGHT THAT WAS ONE THAT WAS RETURNED TO THE [INAUDIBLE].
THAT'S FINE. GO AHEAD. TRUSTEE FOREMAN.
THAT'S ON ME. TRUSTEE FOREMAN'S MIC ISN'T ON.
YOU KNOW WHAT? I'M GOING TO MOVE IT OVER HERE SO HE CAN QUIT FIDDLING WITH MY MIC.
I JUST WANT TO MAKE SOMETHING CLEAR ABOUT THIS.
THIS IS BASED ON A PURCHASING POLICY THAT THE DISTRICT ADOPTED PROBABLY ABOUT FOUR YEARS AGO, WHERE YOU CAN GO 15% OVER WHATEVER THE PROCUREMENT AMOUNT IS FOR A POLICY.
SO IF YOU HAVE A $10 MILLION CONTRACT, YOU CAN GO 15% OVER THAT, AND IT DOES NOT HAVE TO COME BACK TO THE BOARD AND IT'S NOT THE ADMINISTRATION'S RESPONSIBILITY FOR US TO DO THAT.
IT'S THE BOARD'S RESPONSIBILITY, AND WE NEED TO BE LOOKING AT THAT, AND THE LAST THING I WILL ASK IS THAT THE ADMINISTRATION SUPPLY THE BOARD WITH ALL CONTRACTS THAT WE HAVE GONE OVER IN THE LAST TWO YEARS, TWO SCHOOL YEARS, ALL CONTRACTS THAT WE'VE GONE OVER BY 15%, AND THAT'S IT. OKAY.
ON FOUR, I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT AND IT'S BASED ON THE TAMIKA, YOU WANT TO COME UP? I THINK THAT'S YOU.
[02:00:16]
YOU KNOW, I'VE BEEN ASKING QUESTIONS IN TERMS OF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE SITTING ON THE PANELS FOR THE THE RFQ COMMITTEES, AND THEN THANKS FOR SUPPLYING THE INFORMATION FOR ME, BUT I LOOK AT THIS ONE AND FOR THE MWBE, WE HAVE STEPHANIE BROCKINGTON SITTING ON THERE. IS SHE A PART OF MWBE.SHE'S A PART OF THE MWBE OFFICE? YES. OKAY.
TRUSTEE FOREMAN. IF THERE'RE NOT ANY OTHER QUESTIONS, TRUSTEES, WILL YOU PLEASE CAST YOUR VOTE ON ITEM 10.04? AND TRUSTEE JOHNSON.
THE MOTION PASSES EIGHT VOTING YES AND ONE VOTING NO.
THANK YOU, TRUSTEES, YOU JUST PASSED AGENDA ITEM 10.04.
NOW WE'RE ON 10.05 CONSIDER AND TAKE POSSIBLE ACTION TO AUTHORIZE NEGOTIATE ENTRY INTO A COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT WITH RECOMMENDED VENDOR FOR THE PURCHASE OF DISTRIBUTED ANTENNA SYSTEMS AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE DISTRICT, NOT TO EXCEED $750,000.
GENERAL OPERATING SPECIAL REVENUE BOND FUNDS CONSENT ITEM 9.14 PULLED BY TRUSTEES FOREMAN AND WHITE.
DO I HAVE A MOTION? MOVE TO APPROVE.
SECOND. MOTION BY TRUSTEE FLORES.
TRUSTEES, IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION? TRUSTEE FOREMAN.
SO ALMOST. GOOD MORNING, BRENT.
GOOD MORNING. SO YOU RESPONDED TO MY QUESTION THAT I ASKED ABOUT THE PROCESS AND YOU TALKED ABOUT THE SURVEYS THAT WERE DONE TO DETERMINE THAT THIS PARTICULAR SYSTEM WAS GOING TO GO INTO SOUTH OAK CLIFF, AND I ASK, WHAT OTHER PROCESSES WERE YOU GOING TO USE TO DETERMINE WHAT OTHER CAMPUSES, AND YOU SAID FOR SECURITY REASONS, THEY CAN'T YOU CAN'T SHARE THAT INFORMATION.
SO HAVE YOU DECIDED WHICH SCHOOLS THAT THIS PARTICULAR PROCESS WILL GO IN? BECAUSE IF YOU TALK ABOUT DROPPING CELL PHONES, THAT'S ALL OVER THE DISTRICT, AND I JUST DON'T SEE WHY WE DID A FLOOR PLAN TO TALK ABOUT DROPPING CELL PHONES.
WELL, A COMPANY DID THE SURVEY FOR US, AND THEY USED THE FLOOR PLANS TO MAP OUT WHERE THE SIGNALS WERE THE WEAKEST, AND BASED ON THAT SURVEY, IT GAVE US SOME INDICATORS WHICH CAMPUS NEEDED THE ANTENNA SYSTEM, AND WE'RE ALSO LOOKING AT THE INCIDENTS BEING REPORTED BY EACH CAMPUS, AND THAT'S KIND OF PART OF OUR MATRIX AS WELL.
IN ADDITION TO OUR COMMUNITY SAW A RESOURCE INDEX.
YOU CAN'T SHARE THAT INFORMATION WITH ME AS TO WHICH ONES? I DON'T WANT IT TONIGHT, BUT I JUST CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY I CAN'T GET THE INFORMATION.
I DON'T NEED THE FLOOR PLANS, BUT I NEED SCHOOLS IDENTIFIED.
THE REPORT IS BASICALLY A FLOOR PLAN.
I WANT A LIST OF WHERE THE PRIORITIES ARE.
SO I CAN SEE WHICH SCHOOLS WE'RE LOOKING AT.
THANK YOU TRUSTEE FOREMAN. TRUSTEE WHITE.
I GUESS MY I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'LL BE ABLE TO ANSWER MY QUESTION BECAUSE I WASN'T GOING TO ASK YOU TO IDENTIFY CAMPUSES, BUT I WAS GOING TO ASK YOU HOW MANY CAMPUSES WERE WE GOING TO BE ABLE TO EQUIP WITH THIS DOLLAR AMOUNT? IT'S TWO. OH.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU, TRUSTEE WHITE.
TRUSTEES, WILL YOU PLEASE CAST YOUR VOTES?
[02:05:07]
PRESIDENT HENRY, WERE YOU ABLE TO VOTE? SORRY, I VOTE YES.THE MOTION PASSES SEVEN VOTING YES, ONE VOTING NO, WITH ONE ABSTENTION.
THANK YOU. TRUSTEE. YOU JUST PASSED AGENDA ITEM 10.05.
RHOADS LEARNING CENTER, NOT TO EXCEED $6 MILLION BOND FUNDS.
CONSENT ITEM 9.17 BY TRUSTEES FOREMAN AND WHITE.
DO I HAVE A MOTION? MOVE TO APPROVE.
TRUSTEES, IS THERE DISCUSSION? TRUSTEE FOREMAN. BRENT, WAS THIS DOLLAR AMOUNT FROM THE 2015 BOND? YES.
SO WHEN DID WE TARGET THIS DOLLAR AMOUNT FOR JOSEPH J.
RHODES IN TERMS OF PUTTING IN AN HVAC? IT WAS PART OF THE ORIGINAL SCOPE.
SO THAT WOULD BE IN 2015 OR 2014, 2014-2015? 2015. 2015, AND WE'VE CHANGED THE USAGE AT J.J.
RHOADS, CORRECT? WELL, MAYBE THE SUPERINTENDENT WANT TO ANSWER THAT.
I DON'T WANT TO PUT YOU ON THE SPOT.
YOUR SPECIFIC QUESTION, PLEASE.
RHOADS IN 2014-2015, THAT WAS AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL THAT ACTUALLY HOUSED THE H.S.
THOMPSON STUDENTS AND THE J.J.
RHOADS INCLUDED STUDENTS FROM H.S.
THOMPSON WAS CLOSED IN 2011-2012.
YES. OKAY, SO THE USAGE CHANGE FOR THE SCHOOL.
SO CURRENTLY WE HAVE A PRE-K CENTER.
IS THAT CORRECT? WE DO, AND ABOUT HOW MANY STUDENTS IS THAT? I WOULD HAVE TO SEE IF CHIEF GAYLORD MIGHT HAVE THAT.
110. 110, AND WE HAVE WHAT, AN INTAKE CENTER OR SOME KIND OF COMMUNITY CENTER OVER THERE.
IT'S ONE OF FOUR THAT THAT WE'RE BUILDING ON, RIGHT, THAT WE ARE BUILDING ON.
THE REASON I'M ASKING THOSE QUESTIONS IS THAT IN 2014, WE PROBABLY HAD CLOSER TO 5 OR 600 STUDENTS AT JJ RHOADS. WE HAVE 110 STUDENTS NOW, AND IF WE'VE GOT BOND MONEY THAT'S STILL SETTING FROM 2015 AND WE'RE NOT REASSESSING THE USAGE AFTER WE CHANGE THE USAGE OF THE SCHOOLS.
I THINK WE NEED TO BE DOING THAT.
$6 MILLION IS A LOT OF MONEY FOR AN HVAC SYSTEM, AND I THINK EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT I'M NOT IN THE CONTRACTING BUSINESS, SO I CAN'T SAY IF IT'S RIGHT OR WRONG, BUT WHAT I CAN SAY IS, IS THAT WE GOT SCHOOLS WITH THREE, FOUR OR FIVE HUNDRED STUDENTS THAT PROBABLY NEED THAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITY.
SO I WOULD JUST STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT IF WE STILL GOT 2015 BOND MONEY THAT WE ALLOCATED IN 2014-2015, THAT WE TAKE A STRONG LOOK AT, HOW DO WE REASSESS THOSE DOLLARS AND IF WHAT WE'RE DOING MAKES SENSE, NOT JUST BECAUSE WE GOT IT THERE AND WE PUT IT THERE IN 2015, BUT IS IT THE RIGHT USES TO MAXIMIZE WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO WITH ALL OF OUR SCHOOLS? AND THAT'S MY COMMENT.
I JUST WANTED TO KNOW, BASICALLY AND I DON'T KNOW WHO MAY BE ABLE TO ANSWER THIS, SUPERINTENDENT, YOU GUYS, WHAT HAVE YOU, BUT WHAT IS OUR FUTURE GOALS FOR THIS CAMPUS? IS IT TO INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF PRE-K THAT WE CURRENTLY HAVE THERE, OR BRING IN OTHER GRADE LEVELS?
[02:10:04]
THE PURPOSE IS TO HAVE IT A MULTI-PURPOSE CENTER WITH A PRIMARY FOCUS BEING ONE OF THE ULTIMATE FOUR RESOURCE CENTERS THAT WE WERE PROVIDING TO OUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY.HOW MUCH HAS THE PRICE IF WE HAD ORIGINALLY DONE IT IN 2015 VERSUS TODAY'S DOLLARS, THAT'S SOMETHING THAT I MEAN, JUST THIS IS FROM 2015, THAT'S ALMOST TEN YEARS NOW, AND ALSO IF WE'RE WHAT IS THE CONDITION OF THE CURRENT AC SYSTEM? I MEAN, OF COURSE, WE HAVE PEOPLE IN THE BUILDING.
IS THE IS THE ENTIRE BUILDING BEING UTILIZED? IS IT ONE ZONE? BECAUSE SOMETIMES THERE'S SEVERAL ZONES.
YOU MAY HAVE ONE ON THE UPPER LEVEL, ONE ON THE ETC..
ARE THERE MULTI ZONES? IS THIS SOMETHING THAT HAS TO BE DONE IMMEDIATELY? THE SYSTEM IS ANTIQUATED.
I RESEARCHED IT BACK TO AT LEAST FIVE YEARS AND NO SIGNIFICANT MECHANICAL WORK HAS BEEN DONE.
THERE ARE A LOT OF COMPLAINTS FROM THE END USER.
RESEARCHED THE MAINTENANCE SYSTEM.
THERE'S A LOT OF WORK ORDERS, AND THERE'S DISCOVERED ISSUES THROUGHOUT.
THIS INVESTMENT WOULD IMPROVE THAT AND CORRECT IT, AND DON'T GET ME WRONG, I MEAN, THERE'S A LOT OF MAINTENANCE ORDERS THAT'S PUT IN ALL OVER.
THAT SEEMS LIKE THERE'S SOMETHING THAT WE EXPERIENCE A LOT, BUT I GUESS MY MAIN CONCERN IS IF WE'RE GOING TO BE INVESTING IT, ARE WE GOING TO BE HANGING ON TO THIS BUILDING? WE'RE NOT GOING TO INVEST THIS MONEY INTO THIS BUILDING AND GET RID OF IT WITHIN THE NEXT 2 TO 3 YEARS? I WANT TO REITERATE, WE MADE A COMMITMENT TO THE COMMUNITY THAT WE WOULD HAVE A RESOURCE CENTER.
SO WE WILL UPHOLD OUR WORD AND MAINTAIN THAT AS A RESOURCE CENTER.
I'M TRYING TO GO WAY BACK TO WHEN WE DID A FACILITY CONDITIONS INDEX MASTER PLAN IN 2018.
JJ RHOADS WAS ONE OF THE WORST FACILITIES IN ALL THE CAMPUSES WE HAD IN THE DISTRICT.
I THINK THERE WERE DISCUSSIONS AT ONE POINT ON TEARING IT DOWN, ETC..
THANK YOU, DR. ELIZALDE WAS SAID THAT WE MADE TWO COMMITMENTS TO THAT COMMUNITY.
WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT EQUITY, ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE, ACCESS TO SECURITY, VIOLENCE, EVERY LIST, YOU DIDN'T WANT TO BE ON THE TOP OF THAT PARTICULAR ZIP CODE FOR LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL WAS ON THE TOP. THE ADMINISTRATION WORKED WITH COMMUNITY MEMBERS FOR A VERY LONG TIME TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WAS GOING TO BE IN THAT RESOURCE CENTER.
YOU CAN ASK THE FOLKS THAT LIVE AROUND THERE.
IF YOU'VE SEEN THE HVAC SYSTEM, I ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO VISIT THAT CAMPUS.
THE THE BIG UNITS IN THE BACK BETWEEN THE BUILDING AND THE GYM.
IS THAT PART OF THE HVAC? I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THAT.
YOU KNOW THOSE CHILLERS? YES. YEAH. THEY'RE HUGE, AND THEY'RE OUTSIDE.
IN ADDITION, THERE'S THAT'S NOT INCLUDED WITH THIS, CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE PLANS THAT WERE SUPPOSED TO BE HAPPENING ON THE BACKSIDE OF JJ RHODES AS WELL? ACTUALLY, THAT'S BEYOND THE SCOPE, IT DOESN'T MATTER.
I HOPE EVERYONE SUPPORTS THIS.
I SUPPORT THIS I DON'T HAVE ANYTHING ELSE, I GUESS, TO SAY ON IT.
ALL RIGHT, TRUSTEES, WILL YOU PLEASE CAST YOUR VOTES? I'M SORRY. TRUSTEE FOREMAN.
TRUSTEE WHITE. DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING IN YOUR LIFE? YES. WELL, TRUSTEE FOREMAN WAS FIRST, BUT NO, GO AHEAD, GO AHEAD, TRUSTEE WHITE, THEN FOREMAN.
[02:15:01]
I UNDERSTAND THAT WE DO HAVE A COMMITMENT, BUT MY QUESTION IS FROM, WAS THERE ANY ADDITIONAL IF THE SCORE IS WHAT PRESIDENT HENRY JUST MENTIONED, AS FAR AS THE FACILITY SCORE IS CONCERNED, HAVE.I MEAN, I KNOW YOU MAY NOT HAVE BEEN ON AT THAT TIME, BUT HAVE WE DONE ANY ADDITIONAL WORK AND UPDATING ON THIS CAMPUS? FROM MY RESEARCH, NO SIGNIFICANT MECHANICAL WORK HAS BEEN DONE IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS.
NOT JUST NOT JUST MECHANICAL, BECAUSE WITH THE FACILITY SCORE THAT ACTUALLY TOLD THE BECAUSE THE CONDITION OF A BUILDING FROM THE PLUMBING STANDARDS TO WIRING, THINGS LIKE THAT, IT WAS A LOT OF COMPONENTS THAT WERE PUT INTO THE SCORE.
HAVE WE DONE ANY UPDATING ON THE CAMPUS? HAS ANY WORK BEEN DONE PERIOD? LAST SUMMER WE DID INTERIOR.
WE MADE A SECURE VESTIBULE FORM.
NOTHING WITH THE MECHANICAL SYSTEMS. WE DID UPDATE THE PRE-K RESTROOMS BECAUSE THEY'RE LOCATED WITHIN THE CLASSROOMS. THANK YOU. THANK YOU, TRUSTEE WHITE.
TRUSTEE FOREMAN. SO I WANT TO BE CLEAR, I GREW UP IN SOUTH DALLAS, SO I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST TRYING TO SUPPORT SOUTH DALLAS.
WHAT I DO BELIEVE IS THAT WE HAVE TO BE RESPONSIBLE WITH TAXPAYERS' MONEY, AND SO I LOOK AT EVERYTHING WITH THAT KIND OF AN EYE, AND I DON'T WANT ANYBODY TO WALK AWAY THINKING THAT I DON'T SUPPORT SOUTH DALLAS, BECAUSE THAT WOULD NOT BE THE TRUTH, BUT THAT'S FURTHEST FROM THE TRUTH, BUT I AM GOING TO ALWAYS LOOK AT THINGS WITH AN EYE OF TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE SPENDING THE TAXPAYERS MONEY CORRECTLY.
ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU. TRUSTEE FOREMAN.
TRUSTEE JOHNSON, DO YOU HAVE SOMETHING? YES, VERY QUICKLY, AND I AGREE WITH TRUSTEE FOREMAN THAT WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE SPENDING TAXPAYER DOLLARS WISELY.
