[5. REPORTS]
THIS IS AGAIN, ONE OF THE FAVORITE TIMES THAT I GET TO TALK ABOUT ALL THE THINGS THAT OUR PRINCIPALS, OUR TEACHERS, OUR SUPPORT STAFF ARE DOING.AND AS I START WITH OUR FIRST SLIDE, I WANTED TO TAKE A MINUTE, EVEN THOUGH IT'S NOT IN THIS SLIDE, IF WE CAN GO TO THE FIRST SLIDE BEFORE I ACTUALLY TALK ABOUT, OUR THIRD GRADE MATH AND READING, WE GAVE YOU AN OVERVIEW OF OUR FIRST SEMESTER DATA COLLECTION FROM MAP.
BUT BEFORE I DO THAT, I WANTED TO TAKE A MINUTE TO REMIND CERTAINLY OUR ENTIRE TEAM MEMBERS AND THE IN ADDITION TO THAT, THE FACT THAT THIS IS OUR BOARD APPRECIATION MONTH, THAT THIS BOARD HAS SUPPORTED US IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT IS, THESE RESULTS ARE A MEASURE OF EVERYONE'S EFFORT.
AND IT STARTS WITH OUR BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
BUT I WOULD BE REMISS IF I DIDN'T TAKE A MOMENT, BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE MAY HAVE HEARD OR READ A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SAN ANTONIO ISD AND SOME OF THE CHALLENGES THAT THEY HAD DURING THE COLD WEATHER SNAP, AND THE FACT THAT THE SCHOOL, SCHOOLS WERE NOT PREPARED.
WE HAVE AN AMAZING GROUP OF STAFF MEMBERS, TEAM MEMBERS IN MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS.
I DOUBT THEY'RE PROBABLY WATCHING, BUT MAYBE SOMEONE WILL TELL THEM THEY CAN GO WATCH IT LATER.
THEY DID AN AMAZING JOB OF ENSURING THAT ALL OF OUR SCHOOLS WERE READY TO RECEIVE STUDENTS, AND THAT MEANT THAT THEY HAD TO WORK OVER THE WEEKEND ON, DOCTOR MARTIN LUTHER KING JR'S.
HOLIDAY, IN OBSERVANCE OF OF HIM, BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO ENSURE THAT OUR STUDENTS HAD GOOD SPACES TO RECEIVE THEM. ALL OF THAT CONTRIBUTES TO HOW OUR STUDENTS PERFORM ACADEMICALLY.
SO I DID WANT TO PUBLICLY GIVE THEM A SHOUT OUT.
SO THIS IS JUST A SLIDE THAT I WANTED TO RECALL THAT OUR ENTIRE THIS BOARD'S MISSION IS ENSURING THAT WE ARE EQUITY FOCUSED AND THAT WE ARE EDUCATING ALL STUDENTS.
AND IT'S A SPECIAL FOCUS ON EARLY EDUCATION AND READING INTERVENTIONISTS WITH HIGH QUALITY INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS, WITH A FOCUS ON THE SCIENCE OF READING. AND SO THAT SLIDE IN PARTICULAR, I JUST WANT YOU TO SEE THAT FOR THIRD GRADE READING AND MATH.
THE ENTIRE STATE ACTUALLY HAD A DECLINE OF 1.3% IN 2023.
BUT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE HIGH STANDARD OF AT THE MEETS LEVEL, NOT JUST AT THE PASSING LEVEL, BUT AT THE MEETS LEVEL AND AT THE MEETS LEVEL FOR THIRD GRADE, AGAIN, YOU SEE THAT WE HAD A 1.4% INCREASE.
AND EVEN IF ALL WE DO IS LOOK AT DALLAS COUNTY, DALLAS COUNTY HAD A DECLINE OF HALF A PERCENT, AND THE ENTIRE STATE HAD A DECLINE OF 1.3%. NOW, WHEN WE LOOK AT MATHEMATICS, WE CAN ALSO SEE THAT TEXAS HAD INCREASES, DALLAS COUNTY HAD INCREASES, BUT WE HAD MORE.
WE HAD DOUBLE WHAT THE TEXAS AVERAGE INCREASE IN THIRD GRADE MATH WAS.
THIS IS OUR OUR SUPPORT STAFF, OUR TEACHERS, OUR PARENTS, OUR PRINCIPALS, OUR PARTNERS, OUR COMMUNITY SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS AND THE INVESTMENTS THAT THIS BOARD HAS MADE IN EARLY LEARNING.
AND MAKE NO MISTAKE, WE ARE NOT, I AM NOT DECLARING VICTORY BY ANY STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION BECAUSE WE DO KNOW OUR MISSION IS TO EDUCATE ALL STUDENTS. BUT I DO WANT TO MAKE SURE WE TAKE A MOMENT TO REMEMBER THAT THIS IS THE WORK OF OUR TEAM MEMBERS, OUR TEACHERS, OUR PRINCIPALS, OUR PARENTS, OUR COMMUNITIES THAT CREATE THESE OUTCOMES.
AND WE ARE MOVING CLEARLY IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
AND SO I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE.
I'M GOING TO, YEAH THERE WE GO.
LET'S GO AHEAD AND GO TO THE CHILDREN AT RISK.
[00:10:04]
MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE STATE.CONGRATULATIONS GO TO WILLIAM B TRAVIS VANGUARD ACADEMY, THE SUDIE L.
WILLIAMS TALENTED AND GIFTED ACADEMY, AND THE SCHOOL FOR THE TALENTED AND GIFTED.

AND I'D ALSO LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT OUR SCHOOLS THAT CHILDREN AT RISK AWARDED, REALLY IMPORTANT AWARD CALLED GOLD RIBBON STATUS THAT INCLUDES NEW TECH HIGH SCHOOL, DA HULCY, STEAM MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND CENTRAL ELEMENTARY.
AND THESE THREE ARE VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE THEY DO NOT HAVE ACADEMIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS.
AND SO NOT ONLY ARE OUR MAGNET SCHOOLS AT THE TOP OF THE PERFORMANCE LIST, BUT SO ARE SCHOOLS LIKE NEW TECH, DA HULSEY AND CENTRAL.
AGAIN, THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR TEAM MEMBERS, OUR TEACHERS, OUR PRINCIPALS FOR ALL OF THE INVESTMENT.
AND SO TODAY WE GET TO CELEBRATE THE LEADERS TO MY RIGHT AND THE LEADERS TO MY LEFT.
IN DALLAS ISD, WE ARE BLESSED WITH LEADERS WHO REMAIN FOCUSED NOT ON ADULT ISSUES, BUT THEY REMAIN FOCUSED ON THE MISSION OF EDUCATING ALL STUDENTS FOR SUCCESS. I ABSOLUTELY CAN GUARANTEE YOU THAT THEY DO NOT RECEIVE ENOUGH RECOGNITION FOR KEEPING THEIR FOCUS ON KIDS.
IT'S VERY EASY TO GET DISTRACTED, BUT NOT THIS BOARD.
SO ON BEHALF OF THE PEOPLE OF DALLAS, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
LET'S GIVE THEM AN APPLAUSE, PLEASE.
OH, THAT'S RIGHT, THEY DON'T GET PAID.

I AM THE EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT OF NEA DALLAS.
JANUARY IS BOARD RECOGNITION MONTH.
THE THEME THIS YEAR IS LOCALLY ELECTED, COMMUNITY CONNECTED.
HERE DALLAS ISD, OUR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS ARE ELECTED BY COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO TRUST YOU TO DO WHAT'S BEST FOR STUDENTS.
ENSURING AN EXCELLENT EDUCATION IS THE WORK OF MANY AND COLLABORATING WITH TEACHERS, PARENTS AND ALL STAKEHOLDERS TO PROMOTE STANDARDS IN WAYS THAT REFLECT THE COMMUNITY'S VALUE.
[00:45:04]
NEA DALLAS DOES NOT ALWAYS AGREE WITH SOME OF THE DECISIONS THAT ARE MADE BY THIS BOARD, BUT WE DO APPRECIATE THE TIME, SERVICE AND DEDICATION YOU GIVE TO THIS DISTRICT.SO TODAY WE STOP TO SAY THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.
GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS ROSIE KURTZ.
I'M A TEACHER IN DALLAS ISD AND A MEMBER OF ALLIANCE AFT.
TODAY, COACHES FROM CARNEGIE LEARNING CAME TO OBSERVE MY GEOMETRY CLASS.
BUT, SO CARNEGIE IS REALLY CONFUSING.
IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN IMPLEMENTED ONE GRADE LEVEL AT A TIME, AS THE YOUNGEST STUDENTS MOVED UP SO THAT KIDS COULD BE PROPERLY TRAINED IN THIS WAY OF THINKING, RATHER THAN HAVE US HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS TRYING TO ENTIRELY CHANGE UP HOW THEY'RE TAUGHT AND HOW THEY LEARN IN THE LAST FEW YEARS OF SCHOOLING.
RECENTLY ON A DFW TEACHERS FACEBOOK GROUP, SOMEONE MADE AN ANONYMOUS POST EXPRESSING FRUSTRATION ABOUT CARNEGIE, AND THERE WAS A QUICK PILE ON OF ABOUT FIVE DOZEN A LITTLE OVER THAT, COMMENTS OF OTHER TEACHERS COMPLAINING ABOUT IT.
A LOT OF TEACHERS SAID IT'S A WASTE OF TIME THEY HAD TO GO THROUGH AND MODIFY ALL THEIR LESSONS.
ONE TEACHER COMMENTED, THIS IS NOT A CURRICULUM ISSUE.
THIS IS AN ISSUE OF ADVANCING KIDS THAT ARE NOT QUALIFIED.
SEVERAL TEACHERS PREDICTED A MASS EXODUS OF MATH TEACHERS FROM DALLAS ISD AFTER THIS YEAR.
ONE TEACHER SAID THEY ASKED TO STOP USING IT WHEN THEY REALIZED IT WAS NOT AT ALL ALIGNED TO THE ACP OR TEKS, AND THEIR PRINCIPAL LET THEM STOP BY OCTOBER.
ONE TEACHER SAID ALL THE TEACHERS AT THE SCHOOL HAD DROPPED IT BY NOVEMBER.
ONE TEACHER SAID, QUOTE, THE AMOUNT OF TIME SPENT SCAFFOLDING AND MODIFYING LESSONS IS CRAZY.
40% OF OUR CURRICULUM IS FOUND IN MATH, WHICH MOST TEACHERS CAN'T FIND TIME FOR.
I'VE BEEN KILLING MYSELF TO MAKE IT WORK, BUT I'VE JUST ABOUT GIVEN UP.
HERE'S WHAT I FEEL IS DESTINED TO HAPPEN.
AFTER A FEW YEARS OF STRUGGLE, WE'LL FINALLY START TO GET THE HANG OF IT.
AND WE'LL START ALL OVER AGAIN.
THERE WILL BE NO END TO IT, AS LONG AS OUR LIVELIHOOD IS BASED ON TEST SCORES, THERE IS SIMPLY NO GETTING AROUND THAT IN THE DISTRICT NEEDS TO FACE THAT HEAD ON AND MAKE A CHOICE. THANK YOU.
WILL THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
ROBERT CECCARELLI FOLLOWED BY JANET MARIANI WITH MIKE HOOK AND MARY ANN HOSKINS ON DECK.
I'M NOT GOING TO SAY MUCH, PEOPLE, CAN YOU HEAR ME? I'M GOING TO, THE CHILDREN AT RISK GAVE OUT THE TEST, THE SCORES FOR THE HIGH SCHOOLS SAMUEL ADAMSON, MADISON, NORTH DALLAS, JEFFERSON, CONRAD, BRYAN ADAMS, SUNSET, HILLCREST, MOLINA GOT A D.
KIMBALL, WILMER-HUTCHINS, SEAGOVILLE, PINKSTON, SOUTH OAK CLIFF, W.T.
WHITE, CARTER, LINCOLN, SPRUCE AND SCHOOL INNOVATION OF ROOSEVELT GOT AN F.
PEOPLE, I WANT YOU TO LOOK AT THIS AND COME BACK NEXT MONTH FIRING BACK AT THESE PEOPLE BECAUSE THEY DON'T CARE IF YOU DON'T GET FIRED UP, THEY DON'T, NOTHING'S GOING TO HAPPEN.
I'M GETTING TIRED OF SAYING THE SAME STUFF EVERY MONTH.
WHY DIDN'T YOU BRING THAT UP? YOU KNOW, THE PROBLEMS ARE.
BUT PEOPLE, IF YOU DON'T DO IT, THEY DON'T GIVE A DAMN.
I'M SORRY, MY MOUTH, BUT YOU GOT TO COME HERE AND LOOK AT IT AND COME BACK FIRING.
BECAUSE THIS IS BEEN GOING ON, BEEN GOING ON.
YOU NEED TO GET FIRED UP AND COME BACK NEXT MONTH AND COME BACK WHEN YOU SEE THE TEST RESULTS.
TELL THEM TO DO WHAT I JUST DID, OKAY.
I'M HAVING ISSUES WITH SAFETY AT SOUTH OAK CLIFF.
[00:50:01]
YOU REMEMBER 2020 WAS A KILLING AT DAVIS FIELDHOUSE.I WAS AT KIMBALL SOUTH OAK CLIFF GAME LAST YEAR.
THE METAL DETECTORS WERE NOT WORKING.
THE SCHOOL BOARD SAID MEMBERS SAYS THEY WERE WORKING.
I TOLD THEM LAST YEAR ABOUT IT.
WATCH SOUTH OAK CLIFF AND SKYLINE THE SAME PROBLEM.
HOW MANY TIMES I HAVE TO SAY IT? TELL ME. I'M GETTING TIRED OF IT.
YOU GET THOSE METAL DETECTORS FIXED.
THE SUPERINTENDENT, YOU'RE PROBABLY GOING TO NOT LAST LONG IF YOU DON'T DO THAT.
OKAY. AND THAT AND THE SCHOOLS.
PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
JANET MARIANI, FOLLOWED BY MIKE HOOK WITH MARY ANN HOSKINS AND SABRINA BRENHAM ON DECK.
MARY JANET MARIANI AND MIKE HOOK ON SPEAKERS, PLEASE.
HI. OH, HI, I'M JANET MARIANI.
THERE HAS NEVER BEEN MORE OF A REASON TO PULL YOUR KIDS OUT OF ANY PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE 13 GRANDKIDS BETWEEN US THAT HAVE GROWN UP BEING VORACIOUS READERS.
MY GOODNESS, THEY COULD READ BEFORE KINDERGARTEN.
KIDS LOVE LEARNING NEW THINGS.
PULL YOUR KIDS OUT OF SCHOOLS THAT DON'T WORK FOR YOU.
I WAS SO ANGRY WHEN I OPENED THE PAPER UP NOT TOO LONG AGO, AND READ THAT DISD HAS CREATED A TRANSGENDER RESOURCE GUIDE.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME? JUST READING THE TEN MYTHS MADE MY BLOOD BOIL.
THE TEXAS LEGISLATURE SAID NO TO TRANSING OUR KIDS.
THIS IS A PERMANENT CASTRATION OF OUR KIDS.
THIS IS A TRAGIC DELUSION PERPETRATED UPON VULNERABLE CHILDREN WHO DO NOT HAVE THE MENTAL EMOTIONAL CAPABILITY TO MAKE THESE CHOICES. THIS IS SINFUL AND A TRAGEDY OFTEN PERPETRATED UPON SEXUALLY ABUSED CHILDREN OR PARENTS OF THESE KIDS WHO HAVE NEVER RECOVERED FROM THEIR OWN SEXUAL ABUSE.
THEY DO NEED OUR LOVE AND MENTAL HEALTH THERAPY.
IT'S LIKE THE FAKE VACCINE THAT WAS PERPETRATED ON US, AND THIS NEEDS TO STOP.
WHAT WE DO NEED IS READING, WRITING, AND MATH SKILLS SO THAT WE CAN RAISE PRODUCTIVE, HEALTHY CHILDREN THAT WILL HAVE A CAREER AND MEANS OF SUPPORT.
STOP TRANCING OUR KIDS USING THIS EVIL IDEOLOGY.
JUST LIKE HAVING SECRET LIBRARIES ON TRUE PORNOGRAPHIC BOOKS, WE KNOW THEY EXIST.
WE KNOW THERE COULD BE HIDDEN LIBRARIES.
I ONCE AGAIN HOPE AND PRAY FOR TRUE EDUCATION TO COME BACK TO AMERICA.
LET'S ALL GET ON OUR KNEES TO GOD.
PRAY HE HASN'T TAKEN HIS HAND OFF AMERICA FOR WHAT THESE TRUE EVIL PEOPLE HAVE DONE.
AND I PRAY OUR REAL PRESIDENT TRUMP GETS ELECTED TO START THE PROCESS.
THANK YOU. WILL THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE MIKE HOOK, FOLLOWED BY MARY ANN HOSKINS WITH SABRINA BRENHAM AND SANDRA CRENSHAW ON DECK. NUMBER NINE.
DID YOU CORRECT THE SITUATION WITH A FEMALE STUDENT BEING ABUSED BY THE PRINCIPAL AT MADISON HIGH SCHOOL? DO YOU REMEMBER THE TWO COMMENTS THE PRINCIPAL SAID TO THE STUDENT ABOUT AMOUNTING TO NOTHING AND BEING FLAT ON HER BACK LIKE HER MOTHER? THAT STUDENT DEFENDED HERSELF AT THE JUNE 2023 SCHOOL BOARD MEETING.
THANKFULLY, IT LOOKS LIKE THE TEACHER OF THE YEAR WENT TO A DIFFERENT HIGH SCHOOL.
CONRAD HIGH SCHOOL GOT THAT AWARD.
$37,000 ADDITIONAL, PLUS A CONTRACT EXTENSION TO 2028, ALL FOR NUMBER TEN.
MY GOODNESS, HOW WE DO FAIL UPWARD WHILE NEGLECTING BASIC AMERICAN TENETS.
Y'ALL ARE RACKING UP D'S AND F'S IN MANY REGULAR HIGH SCHOOLS.
FORTUNATELY, NUMBER SIX VOICED THE THE RUSHED PROCESS.
NUMBER SIX SAYS THAT THIS IS OF HIGH SCHOOL OF HIGH PUBLIC INTEREST IN.
[00:55:01]
IN MY OPINION, NUMBER SIX RIGHTFULLY SPOTLIGHTED DERELICTION OF DISD'S BASIC DUE PROCESS.NUMBER SIX SAID THIS BOARD VOTED ON IT ON A BOARD BRIEFING DAY.
WHY DIDN'T THE OTHER NINE OF YOU ALLOW THE PUBLIC TO HAVE OPPORTUNITY TO WEIGH IN, GET YOUR STATUS CONTROL MENTALITY IN LINE WITH BASIC AMERICAN TENETS? IN AMERICA, YOU GOVERNMENT ARE TO RESPECT WE THE PEOPLE.
WE ARE A CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC.
STOP BREAKING OUR SUPREME LAW OF THE LAND.
YOUR BORDER HERE AND YOUR BORDER ACOLYTES ARE REPUGNANT TO OUR AMERICAN SYSTEM RIGHT HERE, WHILE OUR AMERICA IS CERTAINLY IN GROSS DISARRAY, GRAMBLING STATE UNIVERSITY BOMB THREAT YOU ARE REQUIRED TO TREAT RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS AS WHAT WE ARE A MORAL AND JUST PEOPLE EXERCISING OUR GOD GIVEN RIGHTS PER THE CONTRACT, THE US CONSTITUTION.
A FEW MONTHS AGO, DISD COPS ENFORCED AGAINST MY GOD GIVEN RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH RIGHT THERE.
THE SAME GOES FOR PARENTS OF SPECIAL ED STUDENTS.
STOP INTIMIDATING AND RUNNING OVER LEGITIMATE MEMBERS OF OUR SOCIETY.
ALSO, WHEN ONE OF THESE PARENTS..
WILL THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONES.
MARY ANN HOSKINS AND SABRINA BRENHAM, WITH SANDRA CRENSHAW AND CLAIRE MCDADE ON DECK.
MY NAME IS MARY ANN HOSKINS AND I'M BLIND, AND I WANT TO ASK THE BOARD MEMBERS AND THE SUPERINTENDENT, WHY IS DISD DESTROYING BIRTH CERTIFICATES FOR CHILDREN WITH THE WITH THE CHILDREN, WITH THEIR STUDENT RECORDS AND DESTROYING THEIR LIKE THE ADDRESS THAT THEY LIVE AT WHEN THEY WENT TO THE SCHOOLS AND EVERYTHING.
BECAUSE I THINK THAT THEY SHOULD KEEP A BIRTH CERTIFICATE IN THE CHILD'S RECORDS.
THEY SHOULD KEEP THOSE BIRTH CERTIFICATES.
WHY ARE THEY TRYING TO CONCEAL THE IDENTITY OF A CHILD'S PARENTS? IT CAN. IT CAN BECOME AN IDENTITY THEFT ISSUE WHEN THE PERSON BECOMES AN ADULT.
WILL, THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONES? SABRINA BRENHAM AND SANDRA CRENSHAW, WITH CLARE MCDADE AND OLAYINKA GREEN ON DECK.
WE ARE HERE APPROACHING BLACK HISTORY MONTH IN JUST A FEW DAYS.
WE'RE STANDING HERE THIS EVENING BEFORE OUR SCHOOL GOVERNMENT, ASKING ALL OF THE TRUSTEES AND THE SUPERINTENDENT NOT TO TAKE OUR BLACK HISTORY AWAY.
AND ASK HIM FOR THE ACCOUNTABILITY ABOUT THE WAIVER THAT WAS FILED ON DECEMBER 21ST, 2023, TO WAIVE THE DISD BOARD POLICY TO CHANGE THE NAME OF KENNEDY CURRY MIDDLE SCHOOL.
NO QUESTIONS ASKED BY THE BOARD PRESIDENT OR THE SUPERINTENDENT.
WHAT WAS THE URGENCY, MAY I ASK? THE COMMUNITY WAS NOT PROPERLY NOTIFIED.
THE CURRY FAMILY WAS TOTALLY IGNORED.
LET'S PUT THE SHOE ON THE OTHER FOOT.
REMOVE SENATOR WEST NAME FROM A FACILITY USING THIS SAME WAIVER PROCESS TO RUSH THE PROCESS TO REMOVE HIS NAME. HOW DOES THAT SOUND? THIS WAIVER VIOLATED ALL OF OUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS TO FREE SPEECH, WHETHER WE ARE FOR OR AGAINST. I WAS ALSO INVITED TO MEET WITH DISD STAFF ALONE.
[01:00:10]
MEETING AS WELL.IN THAT MEETING, CHIEF HEWITT, REPEATEDLY OVER AND OVER.
MAY I QUOTE? I DROPPED THE BALL AND I APOLOGIZE FOR THAT.
BUT NOTHING STILL CANNOT BE DONE.
I AM ASKING FOR AN IMMEDIATE MEETING WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT.
AND THAT KENNEDY CURRY NAME MUST STAY THE SAME.
WELL, THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
SANDRA CRENSHAW AND CLAIRE MCDADE WITH OLINKA GREEN AND JORGE CASTRO ON DECK.
PEOPLE ASK ME TO STAY OUT OF THE WILMER-HUTCHINS FIGHT.
I HAD COWORKERS WHO LIVED THERE.
MY NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR PLAYED FOOTBALL AND HIS WIFE TAUGHT SCHOOL THERE.
MY TRUE FRIENDS AND I REALLY DON'T HAVE A LOT OF TRUE FRIENDS ASKED ME TO JOIN THIS IN PROTESTING.
THE MAJOR REASON WHY PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATORS WOULD NOT NAME A SCHOOL FACILITY AFTER A LIVING PERSON, SO THAT THEY WOULD NOT HAVE TO HEAR WHAT YOU MAY HEAR TONIGHT.
I WILL NEVER, NEVER FORGET WATCHING 200 JUNIORS AT PAUL QUINN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, I MEAN, PAUL QUINN AUDITORIUM GETTING ON THEIR KNEES, AND PRAYING TO FORMER TRUSTEE ALBERT BLACK, TO PLEASE NOT CLOSE THEIR SCHOOL. SOUTH OAK CLIFF.
WILMER HUTCHINS WAS ROBBED OF THEIR CHAMPIONSHIP THAT YEAR.
FATHERS AND MOTHERS ALIKE BOO HOO'D AND CRIED.
THEY WATCHED ALL OF THE FBI INVESTIGATIONS ON TV.
THE JUNIORS ARE NOW ALMOST 50 YEARS OLD.
AND HOW WOULD YOU LIKE IT, MADAM SUPERINTENDENT, IF YOU HAD TO DRIVE IN YOUR OWN NEIGHBORHOOD AND SEE THE NAME OF A PERSON THAT HELPED CRIPPLE YOU, CRIPPLE YOU WHERE YOU COULDN'T READ AND WRITE AND CRIPPLED YOU FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE? HOW WOULD YOU LIKE THAT? A TRUSTEE SAYS TO ME, PEOPLE TALK ABOUT YOU AND THOSE ARE POLITICALLY MOTIVATED RUMORS.
BUT THE FACT IS, THE FBI FOUND ROTTEN MEAT AND SHRIMP STACKED TO THE ROOF.
LAW OFFICES HAD FURNITURE FROM THEM, BAND INSTRUMENTS WERE STOLEN.
THE HIGH SCHOOL ROOF WAS WEATHERWORN.
RECORDS WERE SHREDDED AND PUT IN THE MCCOMAS LANDFILL.
WILL THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE? CLAIRE MCDADE AND OLINKA GREEN WITH JORGE CASTRO AND CLIFFORD SHERMAN ON DECK.
SUPERINTENDENT, BOARD MEMBERS.
I AM A LIAISON IN THE COMMUNITY OF HOLLAND HILLS.
CHANGING THE NAME OF KENNEDY CURRY PROCESS WAS ALL WRONG.
THE SOCIAL MEDIA TO GET THE WORD OUT TO THE COMMUNITY WAS NOT SUCCESSFUL.
DID ANYONE CONSIDER ON CONTACTING THE CHURCHES? THAT'S RIGHT. SENT OUT NOTICE TO THE DISTRICT CITY COUNCIL? THAT'S RIGHT. ONE DAY THIS WEEK, WE MET WITH A GROUP OF PEOPLE OF YOUR STAFF FROM DISD.
[01:05:04]
I WOULD DESCRIBE WHAT WAS SAID.THAT'S RIGHT. MEANING THAT THERE WERE THINGS THAT THEY DIDN'T DO.
WHAT WAS THE HURRY TO MAKE A MARQUIS? MY QUESTION WOULD BE.
MY QUESTION IS, WILL THERE BE FUNDING BECAUSE OF THIS NAME CHANGE? FOLLOW THE MONEY. DID YOU TAKE SOME CONSIDERATION IN CALLING THE COMPANY NOT TO MAKE THE SIGN? BECAUSE THERE ARE SOME CONTROVERSY.
EVEN COMPLETED MARQUEES CAN BE CHANGED.
AND WITH ALL THAT BEING SAID, WE REALIZE THAT OUR DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE HAS NO KNOWLEDGE OF HISTORY IN THE DISTRICT IN WHICH THEY REPRESENT.
TAKE IN CONSIDERATION JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY IS HISTORY AND DOCTOR MILTON CURRY JUNIOR IS HISTORY.
NOT ONLY HE'S HISTORY FOR OUR CITY, HE'S HISTORY FOR OUR STATE.
HE'S HISTORY FOR OUR COUNTRY, AND HE IS HISTORY FOR THE COMMUNITY OF HOLLAND HILLS.
THE COMMUNITY IS ASKING FOR YOU NOT TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THIS PROCESS.
IT IS SUCH A GREAT EMBARRASSMENT.
WITH THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONES.
OLINKA GREEN AND GEORGE CASTRO WITH CLIFFORD SHERMAN AND BRITTANY LAWRENCE ON DECK.
I'M HERE TODAY TO, MAKE MY STATEMENT ABOUT THE NAME CHANGING OF JOHN F KENNEDY AND MILTON CURRY TO ROYCE WEST LEARNING ACADEMY.
TO ME, THIS IS A MODERN DAY LYNCHING.
THE ORIGINAL AFRICAN AMERICANS WHO MOVED TO HIGHLAND HILLS IN 1959, THESE OCCUPANTS, 1959, WAS THE SAME YEAR THAT ALABAMA ENFORCES CLOSING OF SCHOOLS SO THAT BLACK CHILDREN COULD NOT ENTER.
THEY MOVED HERE TO ESCAPE JIM CROW.
THE SOUTH, A SYSTEM OF CRUEL INJUSTICE THAT WAS WELL OUTSIDE THE LAW.
THEY CAME TO THE COMMUNITY, DESIGNED BY A BLACK MAN NAMED JAMES SMITH, NOT ONLY TO SURVIVE, BUT TO THRIVE, BUT TO SEE THAT THEIR CHILDREN GOT A DECENT ELEMENTARY EDUCATION, OR MIDDLE SCHOOL EDUCATION, OR HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION, OR A COLLEGE EDUCATION WITHOUT THE THREAT OF VIOLENCE, OF CROSSES BEING BURNED ON THEIR LAWN OR BURNING BUSSES.
THE STRANGE FRUIT THAT I SPEAK OF WHEN I THINK OF THIS, I THINK OF THE SONG BY BILLIE HOLIDAY.
THE STRANGE FRUIT THAT I THINK OF IN THIS CONTEXT IS JUST NOT THE UNIMAGINABLE, UNSPEAKABLE CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY THAT DROVE AFRICAN AMERICANS TO HIGHLAND HILLS AS A PLACE OF SAFETY.
BUT THE LYNCHING OF TWO HEROES OF OUR PAST, WHOSE NAMES ARE BEING LYNCHED FROM OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM, OUR HISTORY OF CIVIL RIGHTS, LEAVING TOO MANY CHILDREN WITHIN THAT SCHOOL AND THAT COMMUNITY TO STRIVE WITHOUT STEEPING INTO THE STORIES OF THOSE TWO GREAT PEOPLE OR THE GREAT PEOPLE IN HIGHLAND HILLS.
THESE ARE THE FACES OF HIGHLAND HILLS.
THE PEOPLE, THE GREAT PEOPLE WHO SUCCEEDED AGAINST ALL ODDS, THE STEEPEST ODDS.
TO BE INCLUDED, TO THRIVE IN A BLACK COMMUNITY, TO PROVIDE EXCELLENCE FOR THEIR CHILDREN THROUGH CIVIL RIGHTS STRUGGLE, TO BE A PLACE CALLED HIGHLAND HILLS.
YOU ARE LEAVING OUR HISTORY DANGLING LIKE A STRANGE FRUIT.
SOMETHING THAT IS UGLY AND UNIMAGINABLE, THAT WILL NOT BE RECOGNIZED IN THE NEXT 50 YEARS.
BECAUSE SOMEONE MADE A DECISION THAT HIGHLAND HILLS WAS NOT WORTHY TO HAVE THEIR OWN HISTORY, TO BE REPLACED BY SOMEBODY ELSE'S HISTORY THAT DOES NOT HAVE A PLACE IN OUR HISTORY, ALL POWER TO THE PEOPLE.
[01:10:05]
WILL THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.JORGE CASTRO AND CLIFFORD SHERMAN WITH BRITTANY LAWRENCE AND PEARLY HART ON DECK.
AND I'D LIKE TO THANK OUR TRUSTEES FROM WEST DALLAS.
TRUSTEE JOHNSON AND JOE CARREON.
Y'ALL CARRY A VERY, VERY HEAVY LOAD.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR WHAT Y'ALL DO FOR OUR COMMUNITY.
50 PLUS YEARS LATER, WE ARE STILL PURSUING THE EQUITY FOR OUR COMMUNITY.
BUILT FOR 1500 STUDENTS BEING BUILT, ONE WAS BUILT FOR 1000 STUDENTS.
TODAY, OUR SCHOOL IS OVERCROWDED.
THESE REQUESTS FELL ON DEAF EARS.
TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY, WE ARE NOW WE NOW HAVE TWO INCOMPLETE BUILDINGS IN WEST HILLS.
THERE ARE A LIST OF ISSUES WITH THE NEW PINKSTON BUILDING AND ITS BRANDING THAT THREE YEARS AFTER MOVING IN HAVE NOT BEEN DONE, DATES KEEP BEING PUSHED BACK AND NOTHING IS ACTUALLY BEING DONE.
THE COMMUNITY IS NOT PLEASED WITH THE CONTRACTOR OF THE DISTRICT HIRED FOR THIS PROJECT AT THE L.G.
PINKSTON HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL, DISD, PLEASE LET'S PRACTICE EQUITY.
JACKSON. SHE'S DOING AN EXCELLENT JOB WITH OUR SCHOOL THERE.
WE ALSO HAVE ANOTHER OUTSTANDING PRINCIPAL, MISS HOOPS, WHO TURNED AROUND KFXR.
AT ONE TIME, WE WERE ON THE VERGE OF LOSING THAT COMMUNITY SCHOOL.
AND BEFORE I CLOSE, I'D LIKE TO REALLY THANK MR. BRANT ALFRED ALSO FOR REACHING OUT TO US, TO SUPPORT US IN WHAT WE NEEDED AT THE SCHOOL.
WITH THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
CLIFFORD SHERMAN AND BRITNEY LAWRENCE WITH PEARLY HART AND E RUTH STEWART ON DECK.
HELLO, MY NAME IS CLIFFORD SHERMAN.
I GIVE AWAY COMPUTERS TO GRADUATING SENIORS GOING OFF TO FOUR YEAR COLLEGE FROM L.G.
PINKSTON. I'VE WORKED IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR 25 YEARS.
BUT WHAT Y'ALL DONE TO OUR SCHOOL IS UNBEARABLE.
WINDOWS ARE LEAKING, THEY PATCH THEM UP.
BUT THAT AIN'T WHAT SHOULD BE DONE FOR A NEW SCHOOL.
IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPAIRED RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.
WE LEARN TO DO THINGS RIGHT SO THAT WE DON'T HAVE TO KEEP DOING IT.
THE WHOLE NEIGHBORHOOD WANTS TO KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON.
WE HAVE PEOPLE COMING OUT TO TALK TO US.
THREE MONTHS, NOTHING BASICALLY GOT DONE.
THEY SAID THEY IN THE PROCESS OF DOING IT.
BUT HOW LONG DO IT TAKE TO GET SOMETHING DONE? WE STILL WAITING FOR THE SCHOOL TO BE FINISHED? WE GOT A GYM THAT'S SO SMALL, YOU CAN'T CHANGE THE BASEBALL TEAM, FOOTBALL TEAM? NOBODY CAN CHANGE CLOTHES IN THE LOCKER ROOM.
WE GOT A COACH'S WINDOWS THAT NO WINDOWS IN HIS OFFICE.
HE CAN'T EVEN LOOK OUT AND SEE WHAT'S GOING ON.
WE DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENED.
WE HAVE PEOPLE GETTING PAID FOR SOMETHING THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE NEVER GOT PAID FOR.
SO HOW DO WE HOW DO WE COMPLETE THE SCHOOL? GET IT RIGHT FOR THE STUDENTS.
IT'S FALLING APART BEFORE WE EVEN GET STARTED GOOD.
HOW DO WE GET THE QUALITY INTO THE SCHOOL? WE GO TO NORTH DALLAS.
THE SCHOOLS LOOK LIKE A PLACE TO GO.
WE COME TO OUR SCHOOL AND WE HAVE THINGS, A SCHOOL AIN'T BUT THREE YEARS OLD.
THINGS ARE FALLING OFF THE WALL.
THE PAINT ON THE WALL IS SECOND GRADE.
[01:15:03]
YOU PAINT THE COLORS OF THE SCHOOL AIN'T EVEN RIGHT.YOU GOT GRAY CARPET IN THE SCHOOL WHERE WE GOT BLACK AND GOLD AS OUR SCHOOL COLOR.
WE GOT MORE WHITE AND GRAY IN THE SCHOOL, THEN WE GOT BLACK AND GOLD.
WE STILL TRYING TO UNDERSTAND? AMEN. WHEN DO OUR SCHOOL GET FINISHED? OKAY. THANK YOU.
WILL, THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONES.
BRITTNEY LAWRENCE AND PEARLY HART WITH E, RUTH STEWART AND CLAYTON IGLEHART ON DECK.
MY NAME IS BRITTANY LAWRENCE AND I'M ADDRESSING THE BOARD TONIGHT ON BEHALF OF ALL PARENTS AND STUDENTS WITHIN THE SPECIAL EDUCATION COMMUNITY THAT FEEL CONFUSED AND UNHEARD IN A DISTRICT THAT TIME AND TIME AGAIN, SEEMS TO WANT TO PROVE HOW LITTLE THEY CARE ABOUT OUR CHILDREN AND THEIR NEEDS.
I MET WITH MY CHILD'S SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER THIS PAST MONDAY AT HER SCHOOL, AND I RECEIVED WONDERFUL NEWS REGARDING MY STUDENT'S SUCCESS IN HER COLLABORATIVE PRE-K FOUR CLASS AT HARLEY, MY FOUR YEAR OLD CHILD WITH DOWN SYNDROME WHO ENTERED THIS SCHOOL YEAR NEARLY COMPLETELY NON-VERBAL, CAN NOW VOCALIZE ALL HER LETTERS AND NUMBERS AND WILL HAVE MET AND EXCEEDED AT LEAST THREE OF HER IEP GOALS.
SHE IS ALMOST COMPLETELY ON TRACK WITH HER TYPICAL PEERS.
WHY AM I TELLING YOU THIS? BECAUSE I FOUND OUT NOT THROUGH THE DISTRICT OR HER TEACHER, OR THROUGH ADMINISTRATION, BUT THROUGH ANOTHER CONTACT I'VE MADE SINCE BEGINNING THIS JOURNEY THAT INFORMED ME THAT DESPITE THE EDUCATIONAL SCIENCE PROVING OTHERWISE, THEY WILL BE DISCONTINUING COLLABORATIVE KINDERGARTEN NEXT YEAR.
I CANNOT EVEN BEGIN TO ADDRESS THE ABSURDITY OF THIS.
IT IS THE FAILURE OF THE DISTRICT TO CREATE A SPACE THAT IS CONDUCIVE TO SUCCESS, PLACING AND REPLACING SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS AT RANDOM THROUGHOUT THE TEN COLLABORATIVE SCHOOLS. SOME KIDS IN THREE DIFFERENT SCHOOLS BEFORE THEY HIT THE KINDERGARTEN CLASS.
THERE IS ALSO VERY MUCH NOT HIDDEN SCIENCE THAT SAYS HOW DIFFICULT THAT IS FOR ANY STUDENT, BUT ESPECIALLY THOSE WITH ANY SORT OF EDUCATIONAL DIFFERENCE, WITHOUT HAVING ANY KNOWLEDGE OF HOW TO MAKE A SYSTEM LIKE THIS SUCCESSFUL FOR ALL INVOLVED, YOU HAVE DECIDED THAT IT SIMPLY CAN'T WORK.
SO A DISTRICT FAILURE ONCE AGAIN IS REFLECTED ON OUR STUDENTS.
I HAVE NO ISSUES WITH SELF-CONTAINED CLASSROOMS. EVERY CHILD HAS DIFFERENT INCLUSION NEEDS, BUT ESSENTIALLY WITH THIS DECISION YOU ARE DECIDING A CHILD'S INCLUSION NEEDS.
NOT ONLY HAVE NONE OF YOU SAT IN ON ANY OF MY CHILD'S IEP MEETINGS, BUT BECAUSE YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN THE TIME TO LEARN ANYTHING ABOUT SPECIAL EDUCATION LAW, OR SCIENCE, OR EVEN MET ANY OF THE STUDENTS WHO BENEFIT FROM COLLABORATIVE CLASSROOMS, YOU HAVE ESSENTIALLY ZERO REASON TO DISCONTINUE THIS PROGRAM.
INSTEAD OF GETTING RID OF COLLABORATIVE CLASSROOMS, WHY DON'T YOU RESEARCH HOW TO MAKE THEM SUCCESSFUL? HERE'S THE THING IT'S NOT EVEN THAT SHE MADE A DECISION ABOUT MY CHILD'S FUTURE.
I WOULD MUCH RATHER WORK WITH YOU FROM A PLACE OF HONESTY THAN A PLACE OF SECRECY.
I WANT DISD TO BE A PLACE I CAN BE PROUD TO SEND MY CHILDREN.
I SAW ANOTHER ARTICLE IN THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS, WHICH YOU SHOULD HONESTLY SEND THEM A GIFT BASKET OR SOMETHING FOR HOW LOVELY OF A LIGHT, THEY TEND TO SHINE ON THIS DISTRICT, BUT THE ARTICLE WAS TITLED DALLAS AREA SCHOOLS RANK AMONG TEXAS BEST, WHICH WE SAW EARLIER, BUT ADVOCACY GROUPS WARN OF DECLINE.
THAT DECLINE IS WHERE YOUR COLLABORATIVE CLASSES ARE LOCAL SCHOOLS, NOT YOUR MAGNET SCHOOLS.
WILL, THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONES PEARLY HEARTS AND E RUTH STEWART WITH CLAYTON IGLEHART AND RONALD WRIGHT ON DECK. PEARLY HART.
MY NAME IS PEARLY HART AND I AM AN ESTATE HOLDER IN THE HIGHLAND HILLS AREA.
WE RESCIND THAT YOU WOULD RECONSIDER CHANGING THE NAME OF KENNEDY-CURRY MIDDLE SCHOOL.
THE REASON BEING BECAUSE IT'S HISTORICAL, IT'S HISTORY.
ONCE HISTORY IS GONE, YOU CAN'T GET IT BACK.
I TAKE PEARL C ANDERSON AS AN EXAMPLE.
NO ONE, PROBABLY SOME DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO PEARL C ANDERSON IS, DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THAT SCHOOL IS.
SO I'M ASKING YOU ALL TO RECONSIDER AND THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU'RE DOING.
NOW, I HEARD WHEN WE WENT TO THE MEETING AT, KENNEDY CURRY MIDDLE SCHOOL THAT THEY SAID THAT THAT THEY SENT OUT INFORMATION AND THEY COMMUNICATED WITH THE COMMUNITY.
[01:20:03]
WHEN MY QUESTION IS, HOW WAS THIS COMMUNICATION DONE? I DIDN'T RECEIVE ANYTHING.WAS IT DONE WITH THE FLIER? HOW WAS IT DONE? AND THEN ALSO THEY SAID, I WAS TOLD, WELL, THERE WERE SOME PEOPLE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD WANTED THE NAME CHANGE.
MY QUESTION IS, WERE THOSE PEOPLE THAT WAS FAMILIAR WITH THE HISTORY, OR WERE THOSE NEW PEOPLE TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD THAT DIDN'T KNOW THE HISTORY AND THE REASON WHY KENNEDY CURRY IS KENNEDY CURRY? KENNEDY CURRY IS THE ONLY SCHOOL AROUND HERE THAT HAS THE PRESIDENT, PRESIDENT JOHN F KENNEDY NAME ON IT AND DOCTOR MILTON CURRY.
SO WE'RE GETTING READY TO GO INTO THE BLACK HISTORY MONTH.
SO WHY TAKE AWAY THE HISTORY, IF YOU WANT US TO KNOW THE HISTORY? TEACH THE CHILDREN IN HISTORY AND LET EVERYBODY KNOW THE REASON WHY THE SCHOOL IS WHAT IT'S CALLED, THERE ARE SCHOOLS THAT DON'T I DON'T KNOW WHERE THEY GET THEIR NAME FROM. I WON'T SAY A SCHOOL.
I WON'T DO THAT. I WON'T DO NOTHING LIKE THAT.
BUT I DO KNOW THAT KENNEDY CURRY SHOULD STAY.
THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SAY. THANK YOU.
WILL THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
E RUTH STEWART AND CLAYTON IGLEHART WITH RONALD WRIGHT AND JASMINE GREER ON DECK.
AND WHAT I WANTED TO SAY IS THAT, I WOULD APPRECIATE IT IF YOU ALL WOULD GO BACK, RECONSIDER NAMING A NAME, OR HELP US TO NAME TO GET UNT TO PUT A NAME ON THE BUILDING FOR THAT PERSON.
THAT PERSON HAS GAVE BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS TO UNTD ACROSS FROM WHERE I LIVE, AND I THINK IT'S AN INSULT TO WANT TO NAME A PERSON THAT HAS DONE SO MUCH IN BRINGING A UNIVERSITY TO OUR AREA TO PUT IT ON A MIDDLE SCHOOL NAME.
HE HAS LIED AND EVERYTHING ELSE TO GET THAT UNIVERSITY IN MY COMMUNITY.
WE KNOW WHAT HE PROMISED US, WHAT HE DIDN'T GIVE US, REDID, TOOK THINGS AWAY THAT HE SAID HE WOULDN'T DO, HE DID. WE WASN'T EVEN SUPPOSED TO HAVE A STREET COMING OUT OF UNTD ON TO CAMP WISDOM, BUT WE HAVE ONE NOW, AND THAT'S BECAUSE SOMEBODY LIED.
I DON'T HEY, HE WAS THE ONLY ONE IN THE MEETING RUNNING THE MEETING.
BUT YOU WANT TO GIVE THAT PERSON PUT THAT PERSON'S NAME ON A JUNIOR HIGH WHEN HE GAVE HIS BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS TO UNTD. THAT'S WHO YOU ALL SHOULD BE.
HELPING US TO GET HIS NAME ON ONE OF THOSE BUILDINGS.
AND SO, YOU KNOW, WE JUST WANT SOME HELP.
BUT SINCE, THIS PERSON WHO CAME, TO THE MEETING, I WAS AT THAT MEETING AND BASICALLY SHE SAID, IT'S A DONE DEAL, AIN'T NOTHING YOU CAN DO.
AND SO I ASKED HER, WELL, HOW COME YOU DIDN'T BRING US A COPY OF WHAT YOU WAS READING? YOU KNOW, EVERYBODY DON'T HAVE A PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY.
AND SO SHE SAID, WELL, YOU SHOULD HAVE WENT ON.
I SAID, WELL, I'M HANDICAPPED.
I HAVE A EYE DISORDER PROBLEM, GLAUCOMA.
BUT I CAN GET A THING AND I CAN FOLLOW IT ON PAPER.
SO I ASKED HER FOR A COPY OF IT, WHAT SHE WAS READING THAT'S SUPPOSED TO BE IN DISD'S GUIDELINES.
I'VE YET TO GET THAT COPY FROM HER.
THE SCHOOL WAS THERE OUT HERE TO DO JUST GO AND MAKE A COPY.
BUT SHE LOOKED AT ME LIKE, WELL, YOU KNOW, I DON'T DESERVE ANYTHING.
AND SO WHY SHOULD SHE BE BOTHERED? SINCE IT'S A THANK YOU, MISS STEWART, YOUR TIME HAS EXPIRED.
WELL, THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONES.
CLAYTON IGLEHART AND RONALD WRIGHT WITH JASMINE GREER AND SHANTRINIA HASKELL ON DECK.
[01:25:03]
GOOD EVENING EVERYONE, MY NAME IS JASMINE GREER.I AM FROM DALLAS, TEXAS, AS WELL AS MY FAMILY.
MY FATHER ATTENDED BISHOP COLLEGE, A COLLEGE BROUGHT TO DALLAS, TEXAS BY DOCTOR CURRY IN 1961, THE SAME YEAR THAT THE FIRST NINE AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS WALKED INTO AN ALL CAUCASIAN SCHOOL HERE IN DALLAS, WELL, IN DALLAS, I ALSO GREW UP IN PLEASANT GROVE, TEXAS.
MY PARENTS MOVED MY SIBLINGS AND I TO DESOTO WHEN I TURNED ABOUT 12.
I AM SHARING THIS BECAUSE I UNDERSTAND FROM VARIOUS ASPECTS OF THE TOPIC AT HAND.
I UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF VITALITY AND RESPECT OF OUR HISTORIC FIGURES AND I, AND SIMULTANEOUSLY UNDERSTAND THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT ARE ATTACHED TO BROADENING A CHILD'S EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT.
BOTH KENNEDY AND CURRY IMPACTED OUR CITY GREATLY.
DOCTOR CURRY, PRESIDENT OF BISHOP COLLEGE, HE'S THE, HE WAS THE FIRST BLACK MEMBER OF THE DALLAS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED NEGRO FUND.
AMONGST OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS, CURRY SERVED AS A FUNDAMENTAL HISTORIC FIGURE IN THE HISTORY OF DALLAS, TEXAS, AS WELL AS SENATOR WEST, WHO WAS BORN IN 1952. BUT WHILE WEST IS STILL AROUND THE AGES OF TEN TO WHAT, 15 YEARS OLD? CURRY AND KENNEDY ARE OPENING JFK HIGH SCHOOL AND MILTON K CURRY JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL, GIVING OPPORTUNITY TO AFRICAN AMERICAN CHILDREN TO HAVE RIGHTS TO A FAIR EDUCATION.
FAIR ENOUGH. WEST HAS SERVED HIS DILIGENCE TO OUR COMMUNITY AS WELL, OPENING UNT DALLAS, WHICH WAS THE FIRST FOUR YEAR COLLEGE IN DALLAS, AS WELL AS UNT DALLAS LAW SCHOOL IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN DALLAS, AMONGST OTHER PHENOMENAL DEEDS IN THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM.
TWO, SIMPLY OPEN A ROYCE WEST ACADEMY ELSEWHERE.
THREE, IMPLEMENT SOME OF THE PROGRAM INTO THE KENNEDY CURRY MIDDLE SCHOOL, THUS ALLOWING THE NAME TO REMAIN AS IS WHILE STILL OFFERING OPPORTUNITIES FOR FURTHERING THE FUTURE OF OUR GENERATIONS TO COME.
AGAIN. MY NAME IS JASMINE GREER.
WELL, THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
CLAYTON IGLEHART AND RONALD WRIGHT.
GOOD EVENING. I'M REVEREND RONALD WRIGHT, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF JUSTICE SEEKERS TEXAS.
AND TO THE DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE, WE REALIZE THAT YOU DIDN'T COME AND LET EVERYBODY KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON, AND WE WANTED TO KNOW WHY WAS THE SECOND WAIVER CANCELED IF THE COMMUNITY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON.
AND ANOTHER THING WE WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU IS, WHY DIDN'T YOU NAME THIS SCHOOL AFTER A SCHOOL THAT DIDN'T HAVE A NAME, AS OPPOSED TO TAKING A NAME OFF, THAT MEANT SOMETHING TO THE COMMUNITY, AND THAT'S WHAT THIS IS ALL ABOUT.
AND IF YOU DECIDE AND IF WE HAVE TO FILE AN APPEAL, WE WILL.
BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, YOU CAN NAME THE STADIUM AFTER, KENNEDY AND CURRY OPPOSED TO JUST KICKING THEM TO THE CURB BECAUSE THIS COMMUNITY RESPECTS THEM AND THEY AND THEY KNOW WHAT THAT GROUP DID.
OF COURSE, YOU DON'T KNOW BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT FROM HERE.
AND IF YOU KNOW WHERE YOU COME FROM, YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE YOU'RE GOING.
AND SO THAT'S WHAT WE'RE SHARING WITH YOU IS BEFORE YOU JUST KICK THAT, YOU SAID AFTER 50 YEARS, WELL, AFTER 50 YEARS, DOCTOR KING IS NOT YOU'RE GOING TO TAKE HIS NAME OFF ANYTHING. SO THE POINT WE'RE MAKING IS DON'T JUST DO IT.
SENATOR WEST HAS BEEN HERE FOR A WHILE, BUT WHY WOULDN'T YOU NAME SOUTH OAK CLIFF AFTER SENATOR WEST? IT'S NOT A IT'S NOT, IT DOESN'T HAVE A NAME ON IT.
AND SO YOU'RE THE ONE THAT STARTED THIS.
SO WE WANT TO LET YOU KNOW WE EXPECT YOU TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS.
AND I'M NOT GOING TO GO ON BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO PASS THE OFFERING TRAY AROUND.
IT'S CLAYTON IGLEHART IN THE BUILDING.
WELL, THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
SHATRINA HASKELL AND TERRI SHARP WITH CLAUDIA FOWLER AND NATHANIEL WHITE ON DECK.
MY PARENTS STAYED DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE SCHOOL FACING BEFORE THEY TORE DOWN BISHOP HEIGHTS, MY PARENTS STAYED RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE ENTRANCE OF THE SCHOOL, AND I WAS TALKING, AFTER WE FOUND OUT ABOUT ALL OF THIS, I WAS COMING TO SAY THAT THIS IS A GROSS ACT OF LACK OF TRANSPARENCY, MEANING ALL AVENUES OF LETTING THE RESIDENTS OF THAT COMMUNITY KNOW ABOUT THIS NAME CHANGE WAS NOT EXERCISED.
[01:30:04]
PARENTS AND THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T RECEIVE ANYTHING.HOWEVER, I WENT UP AND DOWN THE WHOLE STREET AND AROUND TO SOUTH CLOUD, SOUTH CLOUD, ASKING PEOPLE, WHO DID YOU? DID YOU GET SOMETHING? DID YOU? AND AS FAR AS OTHER PEOPLE THAT COULD SPEAK GOOD ENGLISH, THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T GET ANYTHING.
SO IF YOU WERE, IF YOU'RE TELLING ME THAT YOU REACHED OUT TO THE COMMUNITY AND NONE OF THE COMMUNITY KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT THIS, I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A SOCIAL COMMUNITY.
HOW CAN YOU SHOW INTEREST TO THE SCHOOL SOCIALLY, IF YOU DO NOT HAVE INTERNET OR HAVE THE ACCESS TO BE ABLE TO USE THE INTERNET? SO IN THE MIDST OF THAT, I SAY THAT TO SAY WITH MY PARENTS BEING ON THAT SCHOOL AND THEY ARE STILL ALIVE, THEY WERE LEFT OUT WHERE THEY HAD NO SAY SO, THEY WERE SILENCED, AND THEY'VE BEEN THERE SINCE THE SCHOOL WAS ACTUALLY BUILT.
LIKE ALL THE KIDS, ALL THEIR KIDS WENT THERE.
YOU DIDN'T GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO SAY YES OR NO, THAT THEY WANTED OR DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THEY WANTED, BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO EVEN KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON, AND THEY LIVED THERE.
HOWEVER, ONCE I WAS TAGGED, I WAS TALKED TO AND I WAS TOLD THAT NOW THAT I KNOW WHAT CURRY MEANT AND THAT HE DID THINGS IN THE COMMUNITY AT PAUL QUINN, WHAT I WILL DO IS MAKE SURE THAT I WILL TRY TO HONOR HIS NAME SOMEWHERE ELSE.
WELL, FOR ME, I FEEL LIKE WHY DISHONOR HIS NAME BY TAKING IT OFF NOW TO PUT IT SOMEWHERE ELSE WHEN IT'S ALREADY THERE? SO FOR ME, I'M THINKING, HOW ABOUT IF IT'S GOING TO BE A ROYCE WEST LEADERSHIP ACADEMY? WHY NOT START AT WILMER-HUTCHINS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WHERE YOU START AS A CHILD AND THAT'S A SEED BEING PLANTED IN THOSE KIDS LIVES, FOR THEM TO BE ABLE TO GROW INTO THE LEADER THAT THEY ARE BEING TAUGHT BY BEING AT THE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY.
MISS HASKELL, YOUR TIME HAS EXPIRED.
FOR THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE.
TERRI SHARP AND CLAUDIA FOWLER WITH THE NATHANIEL WHITES AND OLA ALLEN ON DECK.
GOOD EVENING, BOARD, AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COMMUNITY.
I'M A RESIDENT OF THE HIGHLAND HILLS COMMUNITY SINCE 1960.
WE WERE HOUSE NUMBER SEVEN THAT WAS BUILT IN THAT COMMUNITY.
BISHOP COLLEGE HAD NOT YET MOVED FROM MARSHALL, TEXAS.
SIMPSON STUART WAS A DIRT ROAD.
MY PARENTS, LIKE MANY OTHERS, PURCHASED HOMES IN THIS AREA.
THEY WERE THE FIRST GRADUATES OF BISHOP, WILEY, HOUSTON TILLOTSON, PRAIRIE VIEW, AND TEXAS SOUTHERN.
THESE FAMILIES PURCHASED HOMES.
THEY WERE SOME OF THE FIRST BLACK GRADUATES IN MASS.
IT WAS A HAVEN FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN FAMILIES.
THEY WORK HARD TO ESTABLISH THE SCHOOLS AND THE CHURCHES IN THAT AREA.
IN 1961, DISD AND THE FOUNDING FATHERS, THE COUNCIL MEMBERS, DREW US OUT OF THE DISTRICT IN A STAIRSTEP PLAN, NOT WANTING TO INTEGRATE THAT MANY AFRICAN AMERICAN BLACK NEGRO CHILDREN INTO DISD, BISHOP COLLEGE MOVED TO DALLAS.
HE LIVED ON THE STREET I LIVE ON NOW AT 4002 MAHALIA DRIVE.
OUR TEACHERS LIVED IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD.
IN 1973, WHEN DESEGREGATION WAS IMMINENT, DISD WOULD NOT AND COULD NOT ACCOMMODATE THE LARGE NUMBER OF CHILDREN. IF IT HADN'T BEEN FOR HIM, WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED TO US? WELL, I TELL YOU WHAT HAPPENED.
WE WERE FORCED INTO A POOR FARMING COMMUNITY CALL WILMER-HUTCHINS.
PEOPLE WHO GOT TOGETHER, POOR PEOPLE.
MOST OF THE AREA THAT WE FOUGHT OVER WAS HARD FOUGHT BATTLES AND FINANCES.
WE'RE THE ONLY SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT WAS TAXED BY DISD AND WILMER-HUTCHINS, AND WE'VE NEVER BEEN RECOMPENSED FOR THAT.
MOST OF THE SCHOOLS IN THIS AREA HAVE BEEN HARD FOUGHT.
IF IT HAD NOT BEEN FOR DOCTOR CURRY, WE WOULD HAVE BEEN IN GRAVE TROUBLE.
HE GREW UP AROUND THE CORNER FROM ME ON CROSSWOOD.
[01:35:03]
HE GOT A BABY BROTHER NAMED LARRY.I LIKE ROYCE AND VOTE FOR HIM EVERY YEAR.
BUT LET ME SAY THAT WE ARE VERY PROUD OF HIM AND WHAT HE'S DOING.
HE NEEDS A BOULEVARD, A BRIDGE, A STREET, A LANE, A STATE, A FEDERAL BUILDING WHERE HE CAN BE PROPERLY HONORED. LET US NOT BREAK THE SHOULDERS.
THANK YOU, MISS SHARP. YOUR TIME HAS EXPIRED.
WILL THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE? CLAUDIA FOWLER AND NATHANIEL WHITE WITH OLA ALLEN AND RINA HONI ON DECK.
WELL, FIRST OF ALL, GOOD EVENING TO THE DISD SCHOOL BOARD.
THERE'S A REAL THIN LINE BETWEEN ISSUES OF MISCOMMUNICATION AND BEING MISINFORMED.
IF YOU WANT TO TALK HISTORY, BUT IT'S SO APPALLING TO ME THAT WHEN JULY 2006, WHEN THEY CLOSED DOWN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT, WHERE WAS ALL THE ENTHUSIASM THEN OF SAVING OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT? WHEN THEY SHUT DOWN THE SCHOOL BOARD BUILDING, WHERE OUR CHILDREN FROM JOPPY HAD TO GO TO SCHOOL AND WERE TURNED AWAY BECAUSE OF DESEGREGATION, WHERE WAS OUR CONCERN THEN? AND THAT BUILDING RIGHT NOW, BECAUSE I PASSED BY THERE EVERY DAY IS A HOT MESS, OKAY.
OUR OLD ADMINISTRATION BUILDING.
SO TODAY I COME TO SAY THAT YOU ALL AS ELECTED OFFICIALS, BECAUSE THERE'S ONLY ONE OR MAYBE TWO SITTING OUT HERE THAT HAS BEEN AN ELECTED OFFICIAL. I HAVE SERVED ON THE SCHOOL BOARD FOR WILMER-HUTCHINS FOR SEVEN YEARS.
YES, IT IS A VERY HARD JOB THAT YOU ALL HAVE.
BUT FOR 31 YEARS, SENATOR ROYCE HAS GOT UP, DRESSED UP AND DID OUR AND DID OUR DISTRICT JUSTICE BY STAYING IN THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION, COMPLETING HIS 16TH LEGISLATIVE SESSION THIS PAST YEAR ON TO HIS 17TH.
NUMBER TWO, HE IS FIGHTING FOR THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT BECAUSE OF THE PRIVATE SCHOOL VOUCHER.
NOW YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT PRIVATE SCHOOL VOUCHERS.
WHAT? THEY WILL TAKE AT LEAST $8,000 TO PAY FOR CHILDREN THAT DON'T WANT TO GO TO PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
IN AUSTIN. HE IS STILL FIGHTING HARD FOR US.
AND BY THE WAY, KENNEDY CURRY IS THE ONLY STANDING SCHOOL THAT ROYCE WEST ATTENDED.
YES, I KNOW ABOUT UNT, BEEN TO LOVELY MEETINGS UP THERE AND ALL OF THAT.
I THINK I CAN MAKE THIS HAPPEN.
WE TALK ABOUT THE MEETING THAT OCCURRED IN NOVEMBER AND OTHER MEETINGS.
ONE OF THE PARTICIPANTS HERE WENT ON THERE AND LIKED IT.
YOU KNEW ABOUT THE MEETING, MISS MCDADE WAS IN THE MEETING ON ZOOM CALL.
I GOT THE FLIER, PUT IT ON, AND I'M NOT SPEAKING FOR CLASS OF 1979.
I WOULD IF I WAS IN ATTENDANCE AND SAW IT, PUT IT OUT THERE ON MY PAGE.
I CLOCK 5000 PEOPLE AT 2000 FOLLOWERS.
IF I CAN MAKE IT TO THE MEETING, EVERYBODY ELSE COULD OR GOT ON YOU.
MISS FOWLER, YOUR TIME HAS EXPIRED.
FOR THE NEXT TWO SPEAKERS, PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONES.
NATHANIEL WHITE AND OLA ALLEN WITH RE MAHONEY ON DECK.
HI, MY NAME IS NATHANIEL WHITE.
ACTUALLY, I DID GROW UP IN HIGHLAND HILLS.
I WENT TO MAMMY WHITE, ALTA MESA, BISHOP HEIGHTS, WILMER-HUTCHINS.
I AM STANDING HERE TODAY, TO SAY, HEY, MY MOM PASSED AWAY.
THE HOUSE THAT WE HAVE ON HAPPY CANYON, THAT'S WHERE I LIVE NOW.
SHE ONLY PASSED AWAY A YEAR AGO.
SO, I'M ACTUALLY AFTER HEARING AND MEETING WITH BOTH SIDES, I'M ACTUALLY IN FAVOR OF NUMBER ONE. WHAT YOU GUYS ARE DOING IN REIMAGINING KENNEDY CURRY.
I'VE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK AND SERVE WITH SOME THAT'S SITTING HERE.
THE SENATOR HIMSELF, PRESIDENT HMONG AT UNT DALLAS.
[01:40:06]
IF I'VE EVER SEEN ANY GENTRIFICATION IN MY LIFE.AND WHAT IS BEING GIVEN TO THESE KIDS IS NOT JUST THE NAME, BUT A CREDENTIAL THAT THEY'RE GOING TO BE ABLE TO LIVE IN THAT AREA AND, AND AFFORD TO LIVE IN THAT AREA. MY MOM, WHEN SHE WAS ALIVE, HER TAX BURDEN WAS VERY, VERY LIGHT.
WHEN YOU AT A CERTAIN AGE, YOUR TAX BURDEN IS VERY, VERY LIGHT IN DALLAS.
THANK WE'RE THANKFUL FOR Y'ALL FOR THAT.
BUT MY POINT IS THERE HAS TO BE SOMEBODY WILLING TO TAKE A STEP FORWARD WITHOUT TAKING TWO STEPS BACKWARDS EVERY TIME . I ACKNOWLEDGE THE FACT THAT YOU GUYS MADE A DECISION AND IT'S TOUGH.
I'M STANDING UP HERE NOW. I STILL GOT TO GO BACK HOME, YOU KNOW? BUT THE REALITY OF IT IS, LIKE I SHARED WITH THEM, IF IT IS TRUE THAT THE PROCESS WAS DISHONORED AND THE PEOPLE WERE DISHONORED, THEN LET'S START AGAIN AND DO IT RIGHT.
AND IF IT WAS, IF IF IT WAS DONE RIGHT THE FIRST TIME, LET'S GO ON AND KEEP MOVING FORWARD.
WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO REALLY DO SOMETHING FOR LIKE THIS LITTLE KID I SAW.
IF HIS NAME IS ON THAT, ON THAT ACADEMY.
WHAT MORE ENTHUSIASM CAN WE GET FROM HIM BEING ALIVE? NOTHING AGAINST DOCTOR CURRY, NOTHING AGAINST KENNEDY, WHEN HE WAS PRESIDENT.
BUT I'M SAYING EVERYTHING IS FOR THESE KIDS.
I THINK YOU GUYS MADE A GREAT DECISION.
WILL THE LAST TWO SPEAKERS PLEASE COME TO THE MICROPHONE, OLA ALLEN FOLLOWED BY RENA HONI.
RINA. HONI, OUR FINAL SPEAKER.
GOOD EVENING, PRESIDENT HENRY ONLINE.
TRUSTEES AND SUPERINTENDENT ELIZALDE.
I'M REENA HONY, PRESIDENT OF ALLIANCE AFT AND THE DISTRICT SEVEN CONSTITUENT.
I'M ADDRESSING A NON AGENDA ITEM THIS EVENING FOR THE DISTRICT'S CONSIDERATION.
TO BEGIN, FIRST OF ALL, ALLIANCE AFT IS REMINDING THE DISTRICT THAT ANY PAY INCREASE BEING CONSIDERED THAT IS BELOW THE RATE OF INFLATION IS ESSENTIALLY A PAY CUT FOR ALL EMPLOYEES.
TO CALL AN INCREASE OF RAISE, THEY NEED TO SEE AT LEAST 2 TO 3% OVER THE RATE OF INFLATION.
IN ADDITION, I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE THE DISTRICT TO TAKE A SERIOUS LOOK AT THE CONTRIBUTIONS CURRENTLY MADE TO EMPLOYEES HEALTH CARE PLANS. INFLATION HAS TRIGGERED RISING COSTS AND THE DISTRICT'S CONTRIBUTION, WHILE GREATLY APPRECIATED, DO NOT KEEP UP WITH THE ADDED EXPENSES.
FURTHERMORE, ALLIANCE REQUESTS THAT THE DISTRICT BEGIN CONTRIBUTING TO THOSE EMPLOYEES THAT HAVE INSURANCE BUT HAVE TO INSURE THEIR CHILDREN OR THE WHOLE FAMILY WITH HEALTH CARE COVERAGE.
SINCE DALLAS ISD IS STRIVING TO BE A PREMIER DISTRICT, WE NEED TO TAKE CARE OF OUR EMPLOYEES JUST AS THEY TAKE CARE OF OUR STUDENTS AND THE FACILITIES EVERY DAY.
THANK YOU FOR THE SERVICE THAT YOU'VE GIVEN OVER TIME.
BRAND NEW ONES. THANK YOU FOR THE TIME YOU'RE GOING TO GIVE.
IT'S NOT AN EASY JOB AND IT IS UNPAID, WE'RE ALL VERY WELL AWARE.
BUT THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME, FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION FOR THESE REQUESTS THIS EVENING.
THANK YOU, MR. CHAIR. THIS CONCLUDES OUR SPEAKERS.

SECOND. A MOTION BY TRUSTEE FLORES, SECONDED BY TRUSTEE CARREÓN.
IS THERE A DISCUSSION? YES. TRUSTEE FOREMAN.
I MOVE YOU TO TRUSTEE, YOU MIGHT NOT WANT THAT JOB, BUT, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I NOTICED IN YOUR ANSWER TO MY QUESTION WAS, IS THAT A PART OF THE, I'M ASSUMING THAT PART OF THE REASON FOR THE CHANGE ORDER? YOU SPOKE ABOUT THE PROGRAMS BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS, STEM PROGRAMING AND RESOURCE CENTER.
AND BY THE WAY, I AM GLAD THAT THE DISTRICT HAS BEGAN TO CLARIFY THAT THE RESOURCE CENTER IS NOT AT LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL BECAUSE ALL OF THE FIRST INFORMATION THAT CAME OUT MADE IT APPEAR THAT IT WAS AT LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL IN SOUTH DALLAS IS LARGER THAN LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL.
RHODES, WHICH IS IN SOUTH DALLAS.
BUT, THE QUESTION I HAVE IS THE ALMOST, $600,000 THAT YOU'RE ASKING.
ADDITIONALLY, HOW DOES IT ADDRESS THESE PROGRAMS, AND IS ANY PART OF THAT PROGRAMMATIC? NOW IT'S FIRST OF NEEDED INFRASTRUCTURE.
WE'RE CONVERTING TO HYDRONIC SYSTEM INTO, ROOFTOP SYSTEM AND CHILLER SYSTEM.
OKAY, SO IT'S NONE OF THE FUNDS ARE PROGRAMMATIC.
ANYTHING ELSE, TRUSTEE FOREMAN? I CAN SEE YOUR LIGHTS STILL ON? NO, I TOLD HIM THANK YOU.
HE KNOWS HE'S GOING TO MOVE QUICKLY.
TRUSTEES, PLEASE CAST YOUR VOTES.
NOT ABLE TO GO ON CAMERA, SO I'M NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO VOTE.

CONSIDER AND TAKE POSSIBLE ACTION TO AUTHORIZE, NEGOTIATE AND ENTER INTO A COOPERATIVE AGREEMENT WITH RECOMMENDED VENDOR FOR THE PURCHASE OF PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT AT GENEVA HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, ALBERT C BLACK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, AND JOHN Q ADAMS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, NOT TO EXCEED $1,305,000 GENERAL OPERATING SPECIAL REVENUE AND BOND FUNDS.
THIS WAS CONSENT AGENDA ITEM 9.18 PULLED BY TRUSTEES FOREMAN AND WHITE.
DO I HAVE A MOTION? MOVE FOR APPROVAL? SECOND MOTION BY TRUSTEE FLORES AND SECONDED BY TRUSTEE CARREON.
IS THERE A DISCUSSION? YES. PLEASE GO AHEAD.
AND, SUPERINTENDENT, I WILL ADDRESS THIS DISCUSSION TO YOU.
I'VE TALKED TO CHIEF ALFORD ABOUT MY CONCERNS ABOUT THE WHOLE COOL SCHOOLS PROGRAM.
I HAVE A CAMPUS, WHICH WE DID CORRECT IT, THANKS TO CHIEF BATES.
[01:55:03]
BUT I HAD A SITUATION WHERE COOL SCHOOLS WAS ATTEMPTING TO PUT ADULT, EQUIPMENT ON AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CAMPUS.BUT WHEN WE'RE TALKING ABOUT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN, WE SHOULD BE VERY CAREFUL AND MAKE SURE THAT IT DOES NOT GO ABOVE WHO WE ARE SERVING. AND THAT ADULT PROGRAMS OR ADULT EQUIPMENT, SO THAT THEY CAN HAVE DIFFERENT KINDS OF WORKOUTS AND THOSE KINDS OF STUFF ON OUR ELEMENTARY CAMPUSES FOR SAFETY REASONS.
BUT PART OF OUR ISSUE HAS BEEN IS THAT THEY DO ADDRESS IT AS A PARK.
AND THAT'S WHY I'M NOT ADDRESSING CHIEF ALBERT.
I THINK THAT THE DISTRICT NEEDS TO TAKE ANOTHER LOOK.
AND I'VE, TALKED TO DOCTOR LEAR ALSO ABOUT THIS SITUATION.
THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THAT TO OUR ATTENTION.
THANK YOU. ANY OTHER DISCUSSION.
TRUSTEES, PLEASE CAST YOUR VOTES.
THANK YOU. TRUSTEE WHITE, ARE YOU ABLE TO VOTE? OKAY. THANK YOU.
THE MOTION PASSES, SIX VOTING YES, TWO ABSTAINING, ONE NOT PRESENT TO VOTE.
