AND I'M HAPPY TO HIGHLIGHT JUST A FEW OF THEM, ALONG WITH SOME OF THE DISTRICT'S RECENT EVENTS.

I WANT TO START OFF BY SAYING HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO TRUSTEE DUSTIN MARSHALL, WHO CELEBRATED ANOTHER YEAR THIS MONTH.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMITMENT TO OUR STUDENTS AND TO OUR STAFF.

YOUR SERVICE WILL CONTINUE TO IMPACT STUDENT LIVES FOR YEARS TO COME.

SO AGAIN, THANK YOU.

HELPING STUDENTS OVERCOME OBSTACLES IS AT THE CORE OF WHAT WE DO IN DALLAS ISD AND DURING HOMELESS YOUTH AWARENESS MONTH, WE ARE REMINDED OF THE NEED TO MEET OUR STUDENTS WHERE THEY ARE.

OUR HOMELESS EDUCATION PROGRAM SERVES MORE THAN 3900 HOMELESS SCHOLARS IN OUR SCHOOLS, AND WE ARE HERE FOR THEM AND THEIR FAMILIES EVERY DAY TO MAKE SURE THEY SUCCEED.

NOVEMBER IS ALSO NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH, AND WE ARE PROUD TO CELEBRATE THE RICH HISTORY AND CONTRIBUTIONS MADE BY THESE GREAT AMERICANS.

DALLAS ISD'S AMERICAN INDIAN EDUCATION PROGRAM PROVIDES CULTURAL EVENTS AND ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS, COLLEGE AND CAREER PREPARATION, AND MANY OTHER SERVICES TO OUR STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

MANY THANKS TO THEM AND THEIR REMARKABLE WORK.

DALLAS ISD IS ALSO LEADING THE WAY IN BECOMING MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY.

AND FOR THAT I AM TRULY PROUD AND THANK YOU TO OUR BOARD OF TRUSTEES FOR PROVIDING THE VISION TO SET US ON THIS PATH.

RECYCLING IS UP 12% IN OUR DISTRICT AND YES, WE RECEIVED A GRANT THAT WILL ULTIMATELY ALLOW US TO PURCHASE 25 ELECTRIC SCHOOL BUSSES.

WE'RE USING COMPOSTABLE PLATES IN CAFETERIAS AND RECENTLY CELEBRATED PLASTIC FREE LUNCH DAY.

WE ARE WELL ON OUR WAY TO HAVING A SMALLER CARBON FOOTPRINT AND I AM PROUD OF THESE EFFORTS.

I ALSO WANTED TO TAKE A MOMENT TO RECOGNIZE AND THANK ALL THE VETERANS ON OUR STAFF FOR THEIR SERVICE.

WE VALUE AND HONOR YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS NOT JUST ON VETERANS DAY, BUT TRULY EACH AND EVERY DAY.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO MISSED DISCOVER DALLAS ISD EARLIER THIS MONTH, IT WAS AN INCREDIBLE EVENT THAT BROUGHT NEARLY 3000 VISITORS TO ADAMSON HIGH

SCHOOL FOR A LOOK AT EDUCATIONAL OPTIONS FOR STUDENTS.

WE ALSO ENROLLED 570 STUDENTS ON SITE, AND I WANT TO THANK THE MANY TEAMS THAT MADE THE EVENT A HUGE SUCCESS.

ALSO, THANKS TO PARENTS FOR COMING OUT TO SEE WHAT DALLAS ISD HAS TO OFFER.

WE WILL HOST A VIRTUAL DISCOVER ON DECEMBER 3RD, AND SOON WE WILL ALSO BE HAVING A FOCUS ON NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS THAT IS FORTHCOMING. THE DALLAS EDUCATION FOUNDATION HELD ITS ANNUAL HEART OF TEACHING FUNDRAISER EARLIER THIS THIS PARTICULAR MONTH, AND IT WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.

WE ENJOYED PERFORMANCES THIS YEAR FROM OUR VERY OWN TEACHERS.

AND LET ME TELL YOU, IT WAS A JOY HIGHLIGHTING THOSE FRONTLINE EDUCATORS WHO IMPACT AND INSPIRE OUR STUDENTS EVERY DAY AND SEEING THEIR OWN UNIQUE TALENTS ON DISPLAY.

THANKS TO ALL OUR PARTNERS FOR MAKING THE EVENT A SUCCESS AND TO THE DEF BOARD PRESIDENT VICTOR VITAL FOR HIS LEADERSHIP.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT SCRAPPY EXPERIMENTS ARE, BUT THEY DO APPARENTLY LEAD TO DEEPER LEARNING.

KUDOS TO FOSTER ELEMENTARY STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND VOLUNTEERS WHO PARTICIPATED IN AN EVENT TO PLANT OVER 100 TREES ON CAMPUS GROUNDS AS PART OF THE COOL SCHOOLS PROGRAM. THIS INITIATIVE BY THE TEXAS TREE FOUNDATION AIMS TO CONNECT STUDENTS AND TEACHERS TO NATURE BY CREATING FUN AND ENGAGING OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE.

TRAVIS. IF THERE HAD BEEN A HIGHER BLACK ENROLLMENT THE SLAVE AUCTION I REPORTED AND THE ASSAULT WOULD NOT HAVE COME TO AN UNSUBSTANTIATED RESULT.

AFTER THE APPEAL, I LEARNED THAT THE SCHOOL DID MISCALCULATE MY ENTRANCE SCORE AND I WAS ALLOWED INTO THE SCHOOL.

ONE OF THE POLICE OFFICERS SAID MORE INVESTIGATION INTO MY REPORTING WOULD LOOK LIKE THEY WERE DOING FAVORS.

OUR VISION AND MISSION STATEMENT STATES THAT WE SEEK TO EDUCATE ALL STUDENTS FOR SUCCESS AND TO BE RECOGNIZED AS A PREMIER SCHOOL DISTRICT. I HIGHLY UNDERSTAND THE DISTRICT'S NEED TO MAINTAIN HIGH ENROLLMENT COUNTS AND THE CURRENT EDUCATIONAL POLITICS RELATING TO SUSPENDING STUDENTS FROM OUR MAIN CAMPUSES.

HOWEVER, UNDER THE CURRENT CONDITIONS, WE ARE NOT FULFILLING OUR MISSION AND VISION STATEMENT.

MANY OF OUR STUDENTS ARE NOT MAKING ACCEPTABLE SCORES ON THEIR TSI, SAT, ACT AND STAAR TESTS.

THE STATE ADOPTED A MOTTO OF NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND.

HOWEVER, THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS MANY OF OUR CHILDREN ARE INDEED BEING LEFT BEHIND.

I WOULD ATTRIBUTE PROBLEMATIC BEHAVIOR AND DISCIPLINE ISSUES TO AT LEAST 50% OF THIS OUTCOME.

TEACHERS SPEND 10 TO 20% OF INSTRUCTIONAL TIME ATTEMPTING TO MANAGE BEHAVIORAL ISSUES, DISENGAGE POTENTIAL FIGHTS, AND CURTAIL CELL PHONE AND OFF TOPIC CONVERSATIONS INDUCED BY THEIR STUDENTS.

I HAVE EXPERIENCED SECOND HAND MARIJUANA INTOXICATION BECAUSE STUDENTS AT MY SCHOOL ARE SMOKING IN THE HALLWAYS, BATHROOMS AND COURTYARDS. I HAVE PLACED MYSELF IN HARM'S WAY, ATTEMPTING TO BREAK UP PHYSICAL FIGHTS BETWEEN STUDENTS, AND I HAVE HAD TO DELAY MY TEACHING OR PLC MEETINGS IN ORDER TO CONTACT PARENTS OR STUDENTS OR SECURITY.

THIS EXPERIENCE HAS NOT BEEN MINE ALONE, BUT ALSO THE EXPERIENCE OF HUNDREDS OF DALLAS ISD TEACHERS.

DAY AFTER DAY, WE EDUCATORS CONTINUE TO WITNESS STUDENTS WHO ABSOLUTELY REFUSE TO LEARN AND FOLLOW RULES AND WHO RECRUIT OTHER STUDENTS TO FOLLOW THEIR LEAD.

THEY LEAD THEM TO VACANT HOMES IN THE NEIGHBORHOODS OR TO RANDOM SPOTS ON CAMPUS TO SKIP CLASS, HAVE SEX, DRINK AND USE ILLEGAL DRUGS. I DO BELIEVE THAT STUDENTS SHOULD BE GIVEN SECOND CHANCES AND AN OPPORTUNITY TO REDIRECT THEIR BEHAVIOR.

HOWEVER, MOST DISTRICT CAMPUS EMPLOYEES CAN ATTEST TO THE FACT THAT THERE ARE STUDENTS WHOM THAT NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES THEY VISIT THE COUNSELOR OR THE SOCIAL WORKER OR THE RESET COORDINATOR AND NO MATTER HOW MANY TIMES A BURNT OUT PARENT IS CONTACTED, THEY REFUSE TO COME TO SCHOOL, FOLLOW THE RULES AND COMPLETE THEIR WORK.

THESE REPEAT OFFENDERS, WHEN ARE PRESENT AT SCHOOL, ARE THERE FOR ONE PURPOSE, TO DISRUPT THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND TO ENCOURAGE OTHER STUDENTS TO FOLLOW THEIR FOOTSTEPS. I PROPOSE THAT THESE REPEAT OFFENDERS BE PLACED IN A PERMANENT DALLAS ISD ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL.

THERE'S A LOT OF ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT, AND WE WOULD BE HAPPY TO VISIT WITH YOU.

THEY HAVE SEVERE MENTAL ILLNESS AND ADDICTION ISSUES AND THEY HAVE TO BE PERMANENTLY HOMED.

BUT THE THING IS, AND WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT IT IS DIRECTLY ACROSS FROM BRASHEAR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND NEXT TO THE HAMPTON LIBRARY, WHICH CONNECTS INTO THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

THE WORKFORCE TASK GROUP HAS NEVER BEEN IN SUPPORT OF THIS.
