CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH FROM SEPTEMBER 15TH THROUGH OCTOBER 15TH, WE CELEBRATE HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH AND THE LATINOS WHO

HAVE WHO ARE PAVING THE WAY AND CREATING OPPORTUNITIES.

WE CELEBRATE LATINOS, INCLUDING DANIEL NEGRETTE, WHO WAS A STUDENT AT WOODROW WILSON HIGH SCHOOL WHEN HE DISCOVERED HIS PASSION FOR FOLKLORICO DANCING AND LATER HIS CALLING AS A TEACHER.

COMING FULL CIRCLE, NEGRETTE HAS RETURNED TO WOODROW AS A TEACHER AND IS NOW THE HEAD DIRECTOR FOR THE ICONIC SWEETHEART'S DRILL TEAM.

WORKS WITH THE WOODROW DANCE COMPANY, CO-DIRECTS MONTE'S BALLET FOLKLORICO AND TEACHES DANCE ARTS.

HE CREATED OPPORTUNITIES FOR OTHERS LIKE HIM IN DANCE, WHERE HE WROTE THE MEXICAN AMERICAN FOLKLORIC DANCE STUDIES, WHICH WAS APPROVED AS A COURSE BY THE TEXAS EDUCATION AGENCY.

IT WAS FIRST IMPLEMENTED DURING THE 2021 SCHOOL YEAR AS A STATEWIDE COURSE, SO OTHER STUDENTS LIKE HIM WOULD HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PURSUE THEIR DREAMS. NEXT, WE'D LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE OUR BLUE RIBBON RECOGNITION.

DALLAS ISD IS PROUD TO DISTRICT SCHOOLS HAVE EARNED 2023 NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL AWARDS.

ROSEMONT UPPER SCHOOL AND TRINITY HEIGHTS.

TALENTED AND--YOU CAN CLAP--AND GIFTED WERE AMONG ONLY 29 SCHOOLS IN TEXAS OF 353 NATIONWIDE TO RECEIVE THIS PRESTIGIOUS RECOGNITION.

THE US DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AWARDS THE BLUE RIBBON TO THE SCHOOLS BASED ON THEIR OVERALL ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OR PROGRESS IN CLOSING ACHIEVEMENT GAPS.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE TEACHERS, TEAM MEMBERS, ADMINISTRATORS AND STUDENTS AT THOSE TWO SCHOOLS THAT SHOW WHAT DALLAS ISD CAN DO. NEXT, WE'D LIKE TO LOOK AT OUR ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH.

SEPTEMBER IS ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH AND WE HAVE PUT TOGETHER SEVERAL ACTIVITIES TO RAISE THE AWARENESS OF THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING AT SCHOOL EVERY DAY, AND ANNE FRANK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CELEBRATED ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH WITH A SPECIAL CULTURAL TWIST AS STUDENTS AND TEACHERS DRESSED IN THEIR FAVORITE TRADITIONAL CLOTHING TO HONOR THE DIVERSITY THEY SEE IN THEIR SCHOOL EVERY DAY.

THE NEXT RECOGNITION IS INTERNATIONAL TRANSLATIONS DAY.

ON SEPTEMBER 30TH, WE CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL TRANSLATION DAY, AND I WANT TO TAKE A MOMENT TO THANK THE DEDICATED STAFF OF TRANSLATION SERVICES.

EVERY WEEK THEY CREATE OPPORTUNITIES FOR FAMILIES TO ENGAGE WITH THEIR CHILDREN'S EDUCATION BY INTERPRETING, BY DOING INTERPRETATIONS DURING SPECIAL EDUCATION MEETINGS, PARENT AND COMMUNITY MEETINGS, AND TRANSLATING HUNDREDS OF DOCUMENTS INTO SPANISH AND OTHER LANGUAGES, INCLUDING SWAHILI, ARABIC, PASHTO AND BURMESE.

IN FACT, THEY ARE HERE TODAY INTERPRETING TO OUR COMMUNITY SO THAT THEY CAN MORE EASILY ACCESS AND UNDERSTAND THE BUSINESS THAT TAKES PLACE DURING THESE MEETINGS.

NEXT, WE'D LIKE TO LOOK AT OUR COLLEGE BOUND STUDENTS.

THE ANNUAL DALLAS ISD COLLEGE FAIR TOOK PLACE LAST WEEK AND GAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO STUDENTS AND PARENTS TO MEET WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF MORE THAN 170 COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, INCLUDING HISTORICALLY, HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES.

THANK YOU TO ALL THE COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES FOR OFFERING OUR STUDENTS THESE OPPORTUNITIES.

NEXT, I'D LIKE TO LOOK AT OUR GRANTS FOR INNOVATIVE TEACHING THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF DALLAS AND PRESENTING SPONSOR TEXAS INSTRUMENTS AWARDED 38 DALLAS INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT EDUCATORS WITH GRANTS UP TO $2,500 EACH THROUGH THE ANNUAL GRANTS FOR INNOVATIVE TEACHING IN ITS HISTORY.

THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF DALLAS SIGNATURE PROJECT WAS AWARDED MORE THAN $2.2 MILLION TO DALLAS ISD EDUCATORS WHO ARE SERVING MORE THAN 30,000 STUDENTS. THE PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO ENCOURAGE EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION BY FUNDING SPECIAL PROJECTS, ADDRESSING READING AND LITERACY, ENRICHMENT, DIVERSITY, SPECIAL EDUCATION, SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH AND THE ARTS, AND CULTURAL ENRICHMENT ACROSS ONE OR MORE GRADE LEVELS. THIS YEAR, $78,684 WAS DISTRIBUTED TO SUPPORT DESERVING EDUCATORS WINNING PROJECTS DURING A CEREMONY HELD SEPTEMBER 14TH, 2023, AT JUNIOR LEAGUE OF DALLAS HEADQUARTERS.

SOME OF THE GRANTS INCLUDE ECLIPSES ARE TOTALLY AWESOME, THE HEART OF HAWTHORN LEARNING THROUGH THE SCHOOL GARDEN AND FUTURE BIOTECHNOLOGY. OUR LAST RECOGNITION IS THE ART OF CITY HALL OR THE ART AT CITY HALL.

FINE ARTS TEACHER LINDSAY DEAR MADE A

NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION IN 2023, TO GET OUT OF HER COMFORT COMFORT ZONE.

SHE HAS CERTAINLY DONE THAT.

ALREADY THIS YEAR, SHE HAS NOT ONLY GOTTEN A PRESENT, GOTTEN TO PRESENT AT THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE, BUT HER PAINTING, CALLED SEASONS OF DALLAS, WAS ALSO SELECTED TO BE DISPLAYED IN THE MAYOR'S SUITE IN THE DALLAS CITY HALL.

MISS DEAR HAS SERVED THE DISTRICT AS AN EDUCATOR SINCE 2004, AND SHE SAYS HER FAVORITE PART OF TEACHING IS SEEING STUDENTS EMBRACE AND HONE THEIR TALENTS IN AND OUT OF THE CLASSROOM.

SHE ALSO LOVES THE OPPORTUNITIES HER CAMPUS PROVIDES, SUCH AS PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE DALLAS MUSEUM OF ART, CALLED THE TRAVIS TAKEOVER, WHERE EVERY GRADE LEVEL HAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO COLLABORATE WITH THE MUSEUM AND DISPLAY THEIR ART.

MISS DEAR'S SEASON OF DALLAS WILL BE ON DISPLAY IN CITY HALL THROUGH JANUARY, WHICH AT THAT TIME WE EXPECT MISS DEAR TO MAKE ANOTHER, MORE AUDACIOUS RESOLUTION FOR 2024.

SO THE SUPERINTENDENT EVALUATION COMMITTEE HAD ITS FIRST MEETING EARLIER THIS WEEK, ALTHOUGH IT FEELS LIKE LAST WEEK NOW, WE WERE ABLE TO GO OVER THE SUPERINTENDENT EVALUATION INSTRUMENT, THE METRICS WHICH ARE STILL IN ALIGNMENT WITH OUR GOALS AND INTERIM GOALS, AS WELL AS THE SUPERINTENDENT INCENTIVE PLAN, WHICH IS ALSO IN ALIGNMENT WITH THAT SIMILAR FASHION TO LAST YEAR.

WE'LL HAVE ANOTHER MEETING IN OCTOBER AND THEN LOOK FORWARD TO RECOMMENDING THE EVALUATION INSTRUMENT TO THE FULL BOARD COME NOVEMBER.

FINALLY, LAST WEEK, THE MARCUS LEADERSHIP ACADEMY UNVEILED A NEW BOOK VENDING MACHINE DONATED BY NEC FOUNDATION INVESTING IN CREATIVE WAYS TO PROMOTE EDUCATION AND LITERACY, TO INSTILL A LOVE OF READING IN OUR YOUNGER STUDENTS, TRANSLATING INTO BETTER ACADEMIC RESULTS FOR OUR SCHOOLS, AND THEN I WOULD ALSO NOTE THAT WE DID OUR GROUNDBREAKING FOR MARCUS LEADERSHIP ACADEMY REPLACEMENT SCHOOL A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, AND DE GAULLE, YOURS GROUNDBREAKING WILL BE NEXT WEEK.

SO I LEARNED A LOT OF GOOD FACTS ABOUT HIM, BUT ONE THING THAT HE SAID ABOUT HIS THE SHOW THAT HE'S ON, HE SAID HE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY A CRIMINAL AND DIE OUT THE SHOW AND LAST ONE EPISODE OR BE A POLICEMAN, AND BE THERE FOR THE 22 SOME ODD SEASONS THAT HE'S BEEN AND WHICH WE DEFINITELY APPRECIATE HIM AND ALL OF OUR PRESENTERS, THEY DID A GREAT JOB.

WHO WAS BORN AND RAISED IN WEST DALLAS AND WENT TO DEFEND OUR COUNTRY IN WORLD WAR TWO AND GAVE HIS LIFE FOR OUR COUNTRY IN WORLD WAR TWO.

I STARTED SUBBING HERE IN 2018.

I WORKED AT WINNETKA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL [INAUDIBLE] UNIT FOR THREE DAYS THAT TURNED THREE YEARS.

DURING THE 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR, I MET A YOUNG MAN IN THE FOURTH GRADE WHO WAS STILL UNDERGOING POTTY TRAINING.

AS A FATHER OF FOUR, THIS WAS A MISSION I WANTED TO ACCOMPLISH, AND BY THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR, HE WAS USING THE RESTROOM ON HIS OWN WITH MINIMAL ASSISTANCE.

I FOUGHT ALONGSIDE TOPS TEXAS, ORGANIZED PROJECTS TO GET A $60,000 GRANT PASSED BY DALLAS ISD FOR PARTICIPATORY BUDGETING PROGRAM, WHERE $30,000 EACH WAS GRANTED TO NORTH DALLAS AND SUNSET HIGH SCHOOL.

THE STUDENTS AT THOSE SCHOOLS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO DECIDE HOW THEY WOULD DISTRIBUTE THOSE FUNDS DURING THE 21-22 SCHOOL YEAR, THE RON CLARK HOUSE ACADEMY SYSTEM WAS INTRODUCED TO WINNETKA ELEMENTARY UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF THE GREAT LOURDES GARDUNO, WHO APPROVED THE COACH TANISHA BROWN AND I, TO CREATE THE FIRST EVER RON

CLARK ACADEMY BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT WHERE THE HOUSE OF RIVER [INAUDIBLE] AND SIBINDI AND AMISTAD WENT HEAD TO HEAD PLAYING BASKETBALL.

I REPRESENT TEAM RIVER AND RIVER IS THE ROYAL HOUSE.

IN FRENCH, THAT MEANS DREAMERS AND IDEALISTS, AND THE CRESCENT MOON SYMBOLIZES NEW BEGINNINGS AND MAKING DREAMS INTO REALITY.

THAT BRINGS ME TO MY TOPIC OF DISCUSSION DRIVING OTHERS TO SUCCESS, WHICH IS THE MISSION OF MY NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION.

WE HOSTED A UNITY CONCERT ON JUNE 10TH WITH THE DUNCANVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT TO STRENGTHEN RELATIONSHIPS AND BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN THE COMMUNITY AND LAW ENFORCEMENT.

THE SUMMER OF 2021, LILYS KICKED OFF OUR FIRST EVER FREE SUMMER CAMP FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS OF ALL SPECTRUMS. IT WAS THE HELP OF DALLAS PARKS AND RECREATION FREE SUMMER CAMP PASSES AND FREE FINANCIAL LITERACY COURSES THROUGH STAR UNITED GLOBAL OUTREACH THAT LILYS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PROVIDE SUMMERS FILLED WITH FUN, EXERCISING AND EDUCATION.

IT WAS A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT FROM MANY SOURCES THAT BROUGHT THE SUCCESS TO OUR SUMMER CAMPUS, AND IT IS MY DREAM TO CONTINUE THIS ON A BROADER SCALE.

PARTNER WITH DALLAS ISD AS WE FIGHT TO REGENERATE FUNCTIONAL LIVING SKILLS FOR OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS SO OUR BABIES CAN TEST OUT OF SPED, TRANSITION BACK TO THE CLASSROOM AND PREPARE FOR THE REAL WORLD AHEAD.

I WANT OUR SUPERINTENDENT AND OUR TRUSTEES TO SEE THE STRIKING SIMILARITIES IN THE NEW PROPOSED STATE GRADING METHOD AND TEI.

WE WERE TOLD THAT, YEAH, WHEN THE SAME PEOPLE REGULARLY COME SPEAK TO THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS ABOUT HOW BAD TEI IS, IT DOES MAKE IT EASIER FOR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS TO KIND OF BRUSH IT OFF LIKE IT'S JUST THE TEI CROWD AGAIN.

I ALREADY KIND OF ASSUMED AS MUCH, BUT IT DID MAKE ME FEEL LIKE I WANTED TO TALK ABOUT SOME OTHER THINGS FOR A WHILE.

LUCKILY, ALLIANCE AFT'S RESPECT, EQUITY DIGNITY CAMPAIGN FOCUSES ON A WIDE VARIETY OF ASKS FOR THE DISTRICT REGARDING IMPROVEMENTS IN THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION WE CAN GIVE OUR STUDENTS AND THE QUALITY OF WORKING CONDITIONS WE CAN GIVE OUR STAFF, BUT IT'S SEPTEMBER NOW AND I DON'T THINK I WOULD BE DOING MY DUTY AS A UNION MEMBER TO SPEAK ON BEHALF OF MY UNION SIBLINGS IF I DIDN'T ADDRESS WHAT I'VE BEEN HEARING COMPLAINTS ABOUT SINCE SCORECARDS CAME OUT.

JUST LAST NIGHT AT MY STATE REPRESENTATIVES TOWN HALL ON PUBLIC EDUCATION, MY SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEES SPOKE ABOUT THE LAWSUIT DISD HAS JOINED AGAINST THE STATE ACCOUNTABILITY RATINGS.

MY TRUSTEE SAID THAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT IS NOT AGAINST ACCOUNTABILITY, BUT THAT THEY DON'T LIKE HAVING THE GOALPOSTS MOVED ON THEM AFTER THE FACT.

OF COURSE, EVERY SINGLE TEACHER IN DALLAS ISD CAN SYMPATHIZE WITH THIS FRUSTRATION.

WE ALL WORK HARD AND WE DON'T MIND BEING HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR DOING OUR WORK, BUT IT'S DEMORALIZING AND UNFAIR WHEN YOU FIND YOURSELF EVERY YEAR GETTING A TEI SCORE THAT IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN LAST YEAR'S, BUT STILL JUST A FEW POINTS SHY OF THE NEXT EFFECTIVENESS LEVEL BECAUSE THE QUALIFYING SCORE FOR THAT EFFECTIVENESS LEVEL ALWAYS GOES UP.

ONE TEACHER WHO TEACHES A NICHE SUBJECT THAT IS HARD TO FIND TEACHERS FOR, EXPRESSED FRUSTRATION TO ME THAT THEY HAD A SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR WHERE THEY WERE RATED PROFICIENT ONE.

I HAD TO BREAK THE NEWS TO THEM THAT TWO YEARS OF PROFICIENT ONE IS NOTHING THAT I'VE SEEN INCREDIBLE TEACHERS SPEND TWO, FOUR, SIX, EIGHT YEARS AT PROFICIENT ONE ON THAT PLATEAU. THEY SAID THEIR HOMEWORK THAT DAY WOULD BE TO LOOK AT WHAT POSITIONS WERE AVAILABLE IN MESQUITE WHERE THEY WERE ALREADY BEING RECRUITED.

MY TRUSTEE ALSO EXPLAINED LAST NIGHT THAT PRIOR TO THIS YEAR THE BAR HAD STAYED THE SAME FOR THE A THROUGH F STATE ACCOUNTABILITY RATINGS FOR FIVE YEARS, AND THERE WAS LOGIC BEHIND THAT SO THAT INSTEAD OF THE BAR MOVING EVERY YEAR, THEY COULD TRULY MEASURE HOW MUCH SCHOOLS WERE IMPROVING UP AGAINST THE SAME CRITERIA.

THAT SOUNDED REASONABLE TO ME, AND MAYBE WE COULD FREEZE THE GOALPOSTS OF TEI FOR FIVE YEARS AND SEE HOW IMPRESSIVE OUR TEACHERS GET.

I'M SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN AT THE SAME EFFECTIVENESS LEVEL FOR MOST OF MY TIME IN DALLAS ISD.

I'M VERY PRIVILEGED TO BE FINANCIALLY SECURE WITH WHAT I MAKE NOW, SO IT'S NOT SO MUCH THAT I DESPERATELY NEED MORE MONEY AS IT IS THAT I NEED MORE CONFIDENCE.

UNLIKE SOME OTHER TEACHERS WHO ARE RIGHTEOUSLY ANGRY AND INDIGNANT WHEN THEY SEE THEIR STAGNANT LEVELS BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY'RE GREAT.

FOR ME, IT'S JUST TRIGGERS MY OWN SELF ESTEEM ISSUES AND IT MAKES ME WORRY THAT I'M NOT ACTUALLY GROWING AS A TEACHER.

WE HAVE HAD TEAMS OF STUDENTS, AS MENTIONED EARLIER, THAT ARE DRENCHED IN SWEAT BEFORE THEY ARRIVE AT THE GAME.

COACHES ARE DEHYDRATED TO THE POINT WHERE 9-1-1 WAS CALLED.

ANY BUS WHICH EXCEEDS THE TEMPERATURE SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM SERVICE UNTIL FIXED TO PROPERLY MEASURE THE TEMPERATURES ON THE BUSSES.

EACH BUS SHOULD BE EQUIPPED WITH A THERMOMETER TO PROPERLY TRACK HOW HOT IT IS ON THE BUS.

THE SCORE EARNED IN THE SCHOOL STAR CATEGORY HAS NEVER CHANGED.

THREE PRINCIPALS, THREE SUPERINTENDENTS AND EVEN LARGER CAROUSEL OF ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS AND TEACHERS AND COUNTLESS INTERVENTION PROGRAMS. ALL THE WHILE, THE POINTS OUR CAMPUS HAS EARNED HAVEN'T CHANGED.

IN A SYSTEM THAT PURPORTS TO MEASURE THE IMPACT OF INDIVIDUAL TEACHERS, IT MAKES LITTLE SENSE TO RETAIN A METRIC THAT MOST OF THE MEASURED TEACHERS THEMSELVES CANNOT MEANINGFULLY IMPACT. IN FACT, THE PERCENTAGE OF AN EVALUATION REPRESENTED BY THE SCHOOL STAR COMPONENT INCREASES ALMOST IN DIRECT PROPORTION TO A TEACHER'S DISTANCE FROM IT.

FOR SOME ELECTIVE TEACHERS, THE SCHOOL'S STAAR SCORES ARE DOUBLE THE POINT VALUE THEY REPRESENT FOR WHAT WE CALL THE CORE SUBJECTS.

WHY? WHILE THE INTENT BEHIND INCLUDING THIS METRIC MAY BE TO PROMOTE COLLABORATION AND COHESION, IT ACTUALLY REINFORCES COMPETITION AND INEQUITY.

THERE ARE VERY FEW SCHOOLS WHO EARN MORE THAN THREE OF THE FIVE POINTS OR SIX OF THE TEN REPRESENTED BY THIS COMPONENT.

LIKE THE DISTRIBUTION OF DISTINGUISHED TEACHER STATUS DISTRICTWIDE, THOSE POINTS SEEM TO FOLLOW A FAMILIAR PATTERN.

IT IS A DE FACTO GEOGRAPHIC TIERING, PENALIZING TEACHERS FOR THE STUDENTS THEY SERVE.

THIS OCCURS IN A SYSTEM WHERE 1 OR 2 POINTS CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STAYING OR LEAVING THE DISTRICT, SOMETIMES THE PROFESSION.

IF OUR DISTRICT CARES ABOUT EQUITY AND VALUES ITS TEACHERS AS MUCH AS IT CLAIMS, THE SCHOOL'S STAAR COMPONENT MUST BE DISCARDED.

I KNOW THAT FROM MY DAUGHTER'S EXPERIENCE AT OUR SCHOOL, AS WELL AS FROM TALKING TO PARENTS AT OTHER NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS, MAGNET SCHOOLS AND CHOICE SCHOOLS ACROSS THE DISTRICT. I WENT THROUGH THE PROPER CHANNELS TO RAISE THESE CONCERNS, BUT IT WASN'T UNTIL MY NAME APPEARED ON THIS DOCKET THAT I RECEIVED A CALL FROM THE DISTRICT COMMITTING TO ADDRESS THE CONCERNS THAT I'VE BEEN RAISING.

I'M NOT JUST CONCERNED ABOUT MY DAUGHTER OR EVEN JUST THE STUDENTS AT HER SCHOOL.

I'M CONCERNED ABOUT HOW THINGS WORK IN DALLAS ISD.

PARENTS WANT TRANSPARENCY AND COMMUNICATION.

I'M APPRECIATIVE THAT MY CONCERNS HAVE BEEN ADDRESSED AND THAT CHANGES HAVE BEEN PROMISED, BUT THIS DOESN'T SOLVE THE LARGER PROBLEM ABOUT HOW PARENTS ARE FEELING ABOUT VOICING THEIR CONCERNS AND FINDING CHANNELS TO WORK IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE DISTRICT TO COME UP WITH COLLABORATIVE SOLUTIONS.

DALLAS ISD SAYS IT WANTS PARENTS TO ENGAGE AND ADVOCATE BECAUSE THIS IMPROVES SCHOOLS AND IMPACTS STUDENTS ON A BROAD SCALE, BUT THE DISTRICT MUST DO A BETTER JOB LISTENING TO PARENTS AND TEACHERS.

I'M SHARING INFORMATION ABOUT THE NEW PROGRAMS FOR READING AND MATH IN GRADES THREE THROUGH EIGHT, AMPLIFY EUREKA AND CARNEGIE.

THESE PROGRAMS WERE ORIGINALLY IMPLEMENTED AS PILOT PROGRAMS TWO YEARS AGO.

THE ROLLOUTS WERE VERY ROUGH AND FRACTURED FOR MANY TEACHERS, WITH LITTLE UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THINGS WERE TO WORK.

NOW THESE PROGRAMS ARE IN FULL USE ACROSS THE DISTRICT, AND MANY OF THE SAME QUESTIONS ARE PRESENT FROM OUR TEACHERS THAT EXISTED DURING THE PILOT PROGRAMS. THERE WAS A SENSE OF EXCITEMENT WITH ANTICIPATION WHEN THE DECLARATION OF NO MORE LESSON PLANS WAS BROADCAST AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR BUT REALITY IS SET IN, AND THE MESSAGE AND THE ACTUAL IMPLEMENTATION DON'T MATCH.

WHILE THE LESSON PLANS ARE IN, THE TEACHER EDITIONS OF THE SUBJECT TAUGHT, TEACHERS ARE HAVING TO CREATE THEIR OWN SLIDE DECKS FOR DAILY LESSONS, HAVING TO ATTEND NUMEROUS INTERNALIZING MEETINGS AND PRACTICING THEIR LESSON PRESENTATIONS IN FRONT OF THEIR COLLEAGUES.

WHILE THOSE ACTIVITIES MAY HAVE SOME VALUE FOR MANY, THE TIME INVOLVED IN ALL OF THIS IS NEGATIVELY IMPACTING TEACHERS, LEARNING THE NEW CURRICULUM AND FEELING FULLY PREPARED TO TEACH.

THEY'RE, QUITE FRANKLY, EXHAUSTED.

ADDITIONALLY, WE'RE HEARING THAT SOME CLASSROOMS DON'T HAVE ENOUGH BOOKS AND MATERIALS FOR ALL THEIR STUDENTS.

THEY'RE HAVING TO SPEND TIME AND MONEY MAKING COPIES SO THAT EVERYONE CAN PARTICIPATE, AND OF COURSE, DIFFERENT EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS AND CAMPUS ADMINISTRATORS REQUIRE DIFFERENT THINGS.

THEREFORE, THE CONSISTENCY ACROSS THE DISTRICT IS LACKING.

ALLIANCE AFT HAS BEEN IN CONVERSATIONS WITH THE FORMER CHIEF ACADEMIC OFFICER, WHO'S BEEN VERY OPEN TO FINDING SOLUTIONS THAT WILL ENSURE SUCCESS FOR OUR STUDENTS AND FOR OUR TEACHERS AND FOR THE PROGRAMS, AND I LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH OUR NEW CHIEF ACADEMIC OFFICER IN LISTENING TO THE ONES DOING THE WORK EVERY DAY AND TAKING THEIR COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS EXTREMELY SERIOUSLY.

THAT'S CONSIDERED LOW INCOME AND THEY HAVE TO TAKE ON SECOND JOBS EVEN TO BUY A HOUSE TO FEED THEIR FAMILIES.

THEY'VE BEEN TOLD BY MANAGEMENT IF THEY ARE NOT HAPPY TO FIND ANOTHER JOB IN ANOTHER DISTRICT.

SO WHEN A PROPERTY TENDS SO IF A PROPERTY, LET'S SAY IT'S WORTH $10,000, BUT IT'S $50,000 OWED ON IT, NO ONE'S LIKELY GOING TO BUY THAT FROM THE SHERIFF. THE CITY CAN NOW SELL THAT PROPERTY FOR LESS THAN WHAT'S OWED ON IT BECAUSE IT HAS THE CONSENT OF ALL OF THE TAXING ENTITIES.

OKAY, AND ON OCCASIONS WHEN BECAUSE WHAT HAPPENS IS YOU'RE SAYING THAT IF IT DOESN'T SELL, THEN THEY PULL IT, THEY BRING IT BACK IN-HOUSE.

RIGHT, AND BECAUSE I KNOW IN A LOT OF CASES WHEN IT'S HANDLED BY A BANK, A BANK WILL PULL IF THEY'RE NOT GETTING WHAT THEY'RE ASKING FOR AND THEY WILL PUT IT BACK ON THE MARKET THE FOLLOWING MONTH.

SO I WAS JUST ASKING THAT QUESTION BECAUSE I WANT TO KNOW IF THAT'S THE SAME PROCESS THAT IS HAPPENING WITH US.

I KNOW THAT SHERIFF SALES IS A LITTLE DIFFERENT THAN WHAT, YOU KNOW, THE REGULAR SALES ARE, BUT I THINK THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE HERE, TRUSTEE WHITE, IS NO NO ENTITY LIKE US OR THE CITY, NOR THE COUNTY CAN SELL PROPERTY BELOW ITS VALUE.

RIGHT? RIGHT, AND SO WHEN THEY SELL IT ON THE STEPS, EVEN THOUGH IT'S BEEN FORECLOSED IN THAT EXAMPLE THAT ORLANDO WAS GIVING US, IF THE PROPERTY'S APPRAISAL IS EVEN LESS, BUT THE AMOUNT OWED THE CITY AND THE COUNTY CANNOT SELL IT ON THEIR OWN FOR LESS THAN WHAT'S OWED.

SO BECAUSE THESE ARE TAX FORECLOSURES, RIGHT, AND PEOPLE HAVEN'T PAID ON IT.

SO WHAT WE'RE AUTHORIZING IS FOR THEM TO REPRESENT US SO THAT IF THEY DO SELL IT AND WHEN THEY SELL IT, WE WOULD GET SOME TAX DOLLARS.
