WE'RE NOW GOING TO MOVE ON TO SECTION 3, OUR REPORTS, AND WE'RE GOING TO BEGIN WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT, ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTS, ACCOLADES, EVENTS, TRANSFORMING DALLAS ISD, AND OPERATION CONNECTIVITY.

>> I'M GOING TO HAVE A VERY BRIEF REPORT THIS EVENING.

WE KNOW THAT THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION IS BACK IN BUSINESS AND THERE AREN'T MANY ITEMS THAT ARE ON THE CALL THAT AFFECT US.

HOWEVER, THERE ARE ISSUES REGARDING TAXES AND OTHER THINGS THAT ARE EVOLVING AND THEY'VE JUST STARTED.

THERE'S NOT MUCH TO REPORT THERE.

I CONTINUE TO BE VERY PROUD OF OUR EMPLOYEES AND STUDENTS FOR THE EFFORT AND THE ATTENDANCE.

WE ARE OVER 98 PERCENT OF OUR PROJECTED ENROLLMENT.

WE ARE 97 PERCENT IN PERSON.

AS FAR CRY FROM A YEAR AGO.

THEN ALSO WE ACTUALLY ARE HAVING ATTENDANCE AT 91 PERCENT.

AS I'VE COMPARED WITH OTHER DISTRICTS, THAT IS PRETTY FAVORABLE IN ALL OF THOSE CATEGORIES.

I'M REALLY PLEASED THAT I'VE BEEN ABLE TO GO TO ABOUT SEVEN SECONDARY SCHOOLS AND I'VE GOT TO MEET A LOT OF OUR RESEARCH CENTER EMPLOYEES AND SOME OF THE THINGS THAT THEY'RE DOING WITH OUR STUDENTS.

THE ONLY COMPLAINT WAS FROM OUR, I'VE RECEIVED ABOUT THOSE PROGRAMS, THEY'RE FROM THE MAGNET SCHOOLS SAYING THAT THEY WISH THEY HAD A RESEARCH CENTER AT SCHOOL TOO.

BUT ANYWAY, THAT CONCLUDES MY BRIEF REPORT THIS EVENING, MR. PRESIDENT, AND I'LL BE GLAD TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS.

THE AUDIT COMMITTEE MET ON THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16TH, 2021, AND ALL MEMBERS WERE PRESENT.

TRUSTEES MARSHALL, FOREMAN, AND GARCIA, AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS, CHRIS LEWIS AND TONY STEVENS.

THE AUDIT COMMITTEE APPROVED THE REAPPOINTMENT OF THE NON-VOTING COMMUNITY ADVISOR TO THE AUDIT COMMITTEE, CHRISTOPHER LEWIS.

WE ALSO REVIEWED FOUR AUDITS THAT WERE PRESENTED IN OPEN SESSION AND TWO AUDITS THAT WERE REVIEWED IN CLOSED SESSIONS.

RECOMMENDATIONS TO IMPROVE INTERNAL CONTROLS ARE MADE IN THE AREAS OF HUMAN CAPITAL MANAGEMENT AND PAYROLL, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ERAID, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, DISASTER RECOVERY, AND THE EMERGENCY OPERATIONS PLAN.

IN ADDITION, THE INTERNAL AUDIT GROUP PRESENTED RESULTS OF THE ANNUAL AUDIT COMMITTEE REPORT THAT HAS BEEN DISTRIBUTED VIA EMAIL TO ALL TRUSTEES.

THE AUDIT FOLLOW-UP, THE DISTRICT HOTLINE STATUS, THE STATUS OF PRIOR YEAR AND CURRENT YEAR AUDIT PLAN, AND SUFFICIENCY OF DEPARTMENT RESOURCES.

LASTLY, THE STATUS OF CONSTRUCTION AUDITING AROUND CMR AND JOB ORDER CONTRACTING.

FINANCIAL SERVICES PRESENTED THE DISTRICT'S FINANCIAL UPDATE AND STATUS OF THE DISTRICT'S MAINTENANCE WORK ORDER SYSTEM.

INTERNAL AUDIT PRESENTED A STATUS REPORT ON CONSTRUCTION MANAGER AT RISK PROJECT CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION, WHICH INCLUDES FOUR PROJECTS AT TJ, WALNUT HILL INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP ACADEMY, CAREER INSTITUTE NORTH, AND WEST DALLAS STEM, AND MANAGEMENT PRESENTED A PROPOSAL FOR A NEW JOB ORDER CONTRACTING PROGRAM AND DISCUSSED HOW RISKS HAVE BEEN MITIGATED SINCE THE LAST JOCK PROGRAM AUDIT.

THERE'S A PROPOSAL TO COME ON THAT TOPIC TO THE BOARD AT A FUTURE DISCUSSION.

AS PART OF HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH, A SHOUT-OUT TO MS. NOEMI BELTRAN, ART TEACHER AT WT WHITE HIGH SCHOOL, FOR HER EFFORTS TO SHARE WITH HER STUDENTS, THE ARTISTIC LEGACY OF LATIN AMERICA.

AS PART OF HER CLASS, MS. BELTRAN NOT ONLY TEACHES STUDENTS ABOUT FAMOUS LATIN AMERICAN ARTISTS, BUT HELPS THEM CREATE THEIR OWN ARTISTIC EXPRESSIONS BASED ON WHAT THEY LEARN IN CLASS.

I WANT TO THANK ALL OF THE PARENTS, COMMUNITY MEMBERS, AND STAFF WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE VIRTUAL COMMUNITY MEETINGS TO DISCUSS THE NEW HERBERT MARCUS AND EVERETTE DEGOLYER ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.

YOUR INPUT AND VISION ARE INVALUABLE TO US AS WE CONSIDER HOW TO PROVIDE TOP INSTALLATIONS FOR OUR STUDENTS' EDUCATION.

THE PROCESS IS GOING TO TAKE QUITE SOME TIME AND THERE'LL BE A LOT OF OTHER OPPORTUNITIES FOR INPUT.

BUT THE ARCHITECTS DID HAVE TO GET AN INITIAL FEEDBACK ON WHAT THEY WANTED THE SCHOOLS AND THE FACILITIES TO LOOK LIKE.

FINALLY, I WOULD LIKE TO RECOGNIZE DISTRICT 1 TEACHERS, YVONNE DUKE, HEATHER DUNLAP, JAMES PEARSON, KEISHA GRAVES, AND JOSE BANDERAS FOR RECEIVING GRANTS FROM THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF DALLAS GRANTS FOR INNOVATIVE TEACHING TO MAKE THEIR CLASSROOM PROJECTS A REALITY.

EACH OF THESE PROJECTS IS UNIQUE IN NATURE, BUT THEY ALL SHARE THE GOAL OF IMPROVING THE ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE FOR OUR STUDENTS.

FIRST, MANY THANKS TO THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF DALLAS FOR ITS GRANTS FOR INNOVATIVE TEACHING AND CONGRATULATIONS TO DISTRICT 2 EDUCATORS WHO RECEIVED GRANTS, WHICH INCLUDE DAN GARRISON FROM WOODROW AND STEPHANIE CANTU FROM MOCKINGBIRD.

I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO RECOGNIZE THE GREAT EFFORT OF MATTHEW JACKSON, WHO RECENTLY GRADUATED FROM NORTH DALLAS HIGH SCHOOL AND STRUGGLED WITH HOMELESSNESS AS A FRESHMAN.

I KNOW THIS IS BECAUSE OF A COMBINATION OF SEXISM AND THE JOB IS HISTORICALLY SEEN AS WOMEN'S WORK.

ALSO A CULTURE THAT DEVALUES WORKING PEOPLE IN GENERAL.

OUR JOB DOESN'T PAY WELL ENOUGH TO BUY A HOME IN DALLAS.

WE HAVE THIS MENTALITY THAT TEACHERS SHOULD MOVE OUT OF THE CLASSROOM INTO BETTER, HIGHER PAYING POSITIONS.

BUT WHERE DOES THIS LEAVE THE STUDENTS? WHEN STUDENTS HAVE YOUNGER, LESS EXPERIENCED TEACHERS, THEIR EDUCATION SUFFERS. THAT'S OBVIOUS.

MY SCHOOL AS WELL AS DALLAS ISD, EXPERIENCES SIGNIFICANT TEACHER CHURN.

EVERY NEW YEAR, STUDENTS COME BY AND ASK ME, "WHERE IS THIS TEACHER OR THAT TEACHER?" THEY LEFT BECAUSE OF LOW PAY, POOR BENEFITS, HIGH STRESS AND MICRO MANAGEMENT.

OR THEY WERE TIRED BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC.

THEY LEFT BECAUSE OF TEI.

THE MERIT PAY SYSTEM.

THIS GIVES THE STUDENTS THE WORSE EDUCATION.

THIS IS ALL PART OF THE SYSTEMIC RACIST AND CLASSIST SYSTEM THAT WE LIVE UNDER.

PUBLIC EDUCATION, ESPECIALLY IN URBAN SCHOOLS IS BEING DESTROYED.

WE EXPERIENCE, WORSE BUILDINGS, WORSE H BAG SYSTEMS, LESS RESOURCES AND MORE STRESS THAN SUBURBAN DISTRICTS.

TEACHERS ARE DEMORALIZED BY CONSTANT STANDARDIZED TESTING, MICRO MANAGEMENT, WHICH JUMPS FROM TEACHING TO STANDARDIZED TESTS AND LOW PAY AND POOR BENEFITS.

ON TOP OF THIS IS THE PANDEMICS STRUGGLE WHICH HAS CAUSED MANY EDUCATORS TO GET SICK AND DIE.

TEACHING, ALONG WITH OTHER ESSENTIAL WORKER JOBS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT JOBS AND YOU CAN SEE THIS THROUGHOUT THE PANDEMIC THAT WHEN KIDS WEREN'T IN SCHOOL, IN THE PRESENCE OF THEIR TEACHERS GUIDING THEM THROUGH THEIR ASSIGNMENTS, THEIR OUTCOME SIGNIFICANTLY DROPPED OFF.

I CAN SEE IT IF I'M EVER ABSENT, MY STUDENTS HAVE A HARD TIME COMPLETING THE WORK.

A TEACHER NEXT DOOR TO ME JUST QUIT BECAUSE OF THESE STRESSFUL CONDITIONS AND THERE'S STILL NO REPLACEMENT, MEANING THE STUDENTS ARE MISSING OUT.

SOCIAL DISTANCING AND SAFETY PROTOCOLS COULDN'T APPLY WHEN THE DISTRICT PLACE 25-40 KIDS IN ONE ROOM, DEPENDING ON WHO SHOWED UP THAT DAY.

THE DISTRICT CLAIMED IT WAS TENSED TO PREPARE FOR STAAR TESTS.

HER ENTIRE CLASS WAS SENT HOME DUE TO EXPOSURE, INCLUDING TWO OF HER CO-WORKERS WHO TAUGHT THE SAME STUDENTS IN THE SAME CLASS.

HOWEVER, SHE WAS NEVER TOLD ANYTHING.

TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY, EXTENSION CORDS WERE ALL OVER THE FLOOR FOR STUDENTS TO CHARGE THEIR DEVICES, CREATING A RISK FOR TRIPPING AND FALLING.

ANOTHER COWORKER TRIPPED AND FELL ONTO A TABLE.

THE CIC ON THAT CAMPUS SAID THAT THEY WERE ALL AT RISK FOR FALLING BUT THE STUDENTS NEEDED TO CHARGE THEIR DEVICES.

FAST FORWARD TO THIS YEAR, AND THE SAME TEACHER HAS BEEN EXPOSED TO COVID TWICE.

SHE HAS A NASTY, LONG-LASTING COUGH NOW.

THE FAIR IS OPENING UP, CONCERTS ARE BEING HELD, SPORTS ARE BEING PLAYED NOT ONLY ON THE DISTRICT LEVEL, BUT ON THE NATIONAL LEVEL AS WELL.

THIS DISTRICT HAS ALSO DECIDED THAT IT IS SAFE AND THAT THE TIME HAS COME FOR MY SON TO ATTEND IN-PERSON CLASSES ALONG WITH 4,000 OTHER STUDENTS IN A BUILDING.

AS FAR AS I SEE IT, THEIR EXPOSURE IS THE SAME THROUGHOUT ALL THESE ACTIVITIES, SO AGAIN, I ASK WHY THEY'RE NOT ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN AN EVENT THAT THEY CAN BENEFIT FROM BOTH MUSICALLY AND FINANCIALLY.

OTHER SPORTS HAVE WEEKLY COMPETITIONS AND OUR BAND HAS NOT HAD THE PRIVILEGE TO PARTICIPATE IN A COMPETITIVE EVENT.

YOU MAY WONDER AS TO WHY COMPETITION IS SO IMPORTANT.

IF YOU'VE EVER BEEN TO A BATTLE OF THE BANDS, YOU WOULD UNDERSTAND THE LEVEL OF FIRE THAT IGNITES WITHIN OUR CHILDREN WHEN THEY PARTICIPATE IN THESE EVENTS.

THEY GET TO SHOWCASE ALL THEIR HARD WORK AND SKILLS ON THE STANDS AS WELL AS ON THE FIELD DOING THEIR HALFTIME SHOW.

ADDITIONALLY, THESE BATTLE OF THE BANDS HELP PROVIDE DIRECT FUNDING FOR THE BANDS, NOT JUST SKYLINE.

WE, THE PARENTS, ALREADY PROVIDE A LOT OF THE FUNDING FOR THE BAND FROM PURCHASING SHIRTS, SHORTS, AND SHOES FOR OUR KIDS, TO MAKING WEEKLY DONATIONS TO THE BAND SUCH AS DONATING CASES OF WATER, PROVIDING LYSOL AND HAND SANITIZER AND IN THE PAST, WE'VE ALSO PROVIDED THEM WITH FOOD.

THE DISD BUDGET DOES NOT PROVIDE FOR ALL THE BAND'S NEEDS AND WE HAVE A LARGE BAND WITH OVER 150 STUDENTS, WHICH IS WHY THE EVENTS AND EVERY OTHER EVENT THAT IS NOT SPONSORED BY THE DISTRICT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO THE BAND.

THE LESS FUNDING, THE MORE I AS A PARENT HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET.

THE DISTRICT GUIDELINES HAVE THREE CATEGORIES.

THE FIRST ONE THAT THEY ARE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN UIL/TMEA, THE SECOND ONE SAYS THEY CAN PARTICIPATE IN DISD ROBOTICS, THUS CREATING CATEGORY 3, WHICH IS TRAVEL IS NOT ALLOWED NOR ALLOWS CAMPUS FIELD TRIPS.

THERE, AGAIN, LIES MY CONFUSION AS TO WHY SOME EVENTS ARE OKAY AND SOME AREN'T.

THEY'RE GOING TO MARCH IN, PERFORM THEIR HALFTIME SHOW, PERFORM IN THE STANDS, AND THEN MARCH OUT AND COME HOME.

I HAVE CHAPERONED THE BAND TO SEVERAL FOOTBALL GAMES AND I, ALONG WITH OTHER PARENTS, ALWAYS ENSURE THAT BEFORE THE KIDS BOARD THE BUSES, WE SPRAY EVERY ROW THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE BUS WITH LYSOL.

WE ALWAYS CARRY LYSOL WIPES, WE ALWAYS CARRY HAND SANITIZERS, AND WE ALSO ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT OUR KIDS ARE WEARING THEIR MASKS CORRECTLY.

OUR KIDS' HEALTH SAFETY ARE OUR TOP PRIORITY.

IF WE HAVE TO TRUST THE DISTRICT TO KEEP THEM SAFE, THEN THE DISTRICT SHOULD TRUST US AS PARENTS TO KEEP OUR KIDS SAFE TOO AND WANT THE BEST FOR THEM. THANK YOU.

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS MADE IT POSSIBLE WITH THE ESSER FUNDS.

WE'RE ASKING FOR A DEPOSIT IN THE TRUST BANK FOR THE EMPLOYEES BY AWARDING A MINIMUM OF 3,000 DOLLARS FOR ALL EMPLOYEES THAT WORKED IN DALLAS ISD LAST YEAR AND THEN RETURNED THIS ACADEMIC YEAR.

IN A RECENT MEETING WITH THE NATIONAL AFT PRESIDENT, THE UNION THANKED THE SUPERINTENDENT FOR THE DISTRICT'S MASK MANDATE, WHICH WE GREATLY APPRECIATE.

BUT THE SUPERINTENDENT TRIED TO PASS THE BUCK WHEN PRESSURED TO GIVE TEACHERS MORE MONEY, SAYING THAT THE BOARD WON'T VOTE FOR IT.

MEANWHILE, THE BOARD TRIES TO PASS THE BUCK BY POINTING OUT THAT THEY DON'T GET TO VOTE ON HOW THE ESSER FUNDS ARE DISTRIBUTED, IT'S SOLELY UP TO THE ADMINISTRATION.

THE FACT IS, BOTH PARTIES HAVE A LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY HERE.

THE FINAL DECISION IS UP TO THE ADMINISTRATION BUT THE SCHOOL BOARD CANNOT PRETEND THAT THEY ARE UNABLE TO EXERT ANY INFLUENCE OR GIVE ANY OPINIONS TO THE ADMINISTRATION TO INCREASE THE PRESSURE ON THEM TO GIVE TEACHERS AND STAFF THE BONUS THAT WE'VE EARNED.

INSTEAD, TEACHERS ARE UNDER MORE PRESSURE THAN EVER BEFORE TO TEACH MORE, GET THE SCORES BACK UP, LOOK FORWARD, LOOK BACK, NO SHOW, AGGRESSIVELY MONITOR, CONSTRUCT LESSON PLANS THAT SEEM TO GET MORE AND MORE REQUIREMENTS ADDED TO THEM EVERY WEEK.

I HAVE BEEN THE CRYING TEACHER MORE TIMES IN THESE LAST SIX WEEKS THAN I HAVE IN ALL PREVIOUS YEARS COMBINED.

MY COLLEAGUES ARE AMAZING BUT WE'RE ALSO ALL STRUGGLING.

HONESTLY, 3,000 DOLLARS REALLY DOESN'T DO JUSTICE TO WHAT WE'RE GOING THROUGH.

I'M NOT SURE ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY COULD BECAUSE EVEN IF THE DISTRICT PAYS FOR ALL THE TREATMENTS FOR ALL THE NERVOUS BREAKDOWNS THAT HAVE BEEN HAPPENING AND WILL KEEP HAPPENING, THAT TRAUMA WON'T JUST GO AWAY.

WHAT THE 3,000 DOLLARS WILL DO IS AT LEAST MAKE TEACHERS FEEL LIKE MAYBE SOMEONE IS LISTENING, MAYBE SOMEONE WITH SOME POWER CARES A LITTLE ABOUT US AND CARES ABOUT WHAT WE NEED. IT'S A START.

IF YOU CANNOT EVEN GRANT US THIS BONUS, THAT WE'VE MORE THAN EARNED, WE WILL KNOW THAT WE'VE BEEN ABANDONED, WE'LL KNOW THAT UNLIKE ALL THE OTHER DISTRICTS IN TEXAS THAT ARE GIVING MONEY, THIS DISTRICT WOULD RATHER DROWN US WITH PAPERWORK THAN OFFER ANY TRUE SUPPORT.

OTHER DISTRICTS HAVE ALREADY TAKEN THE INITIATIVE AND GIVEN INCREASES: DESOTO, WACO, HUMBLE, IRVING, JUST TO NAME A FEW.

WE CERTAINLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO MOVE IN THIS DIRECTION.

EMPLOYEES WOULD MUCH APPRECIATE A $3,000 BONUS.

BUT THE DEMANDS ON TEACHERS AND STAFF MEMBERS TODAY DURING THIS PANDEMIC GOES FAR BEYOND JUST THE ORDINARY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE DAY.

TEACHERS, ALONG WITH ALL SUPPORT STAFF, FRONTLINE EMPLOYEES, PUTTING THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE EVERY DAY WHILE THIS DEADLY VIRUS SWIRLS AROUND UNIMPEDED.

$3,000 IS NOT A LOT OF MONEY, BUT THE SIMPLE GESTURE BY THE DISTRICT WOULD SHOW THAT THEY ARE VALUED AND THAT THEIR EFFORTS REALLY MATTER.

IT COULD ALSO BE A REASON THAT MANY DECIDE TO CONTINUE WORKING IN THE DISTRICT INSTEAD OF LEAVING.

SERVING OUR CHILDREN EVERY DAY IS A CHALLENGE.

FOR OUR DALLAS ISD HOME, TEACHERS COMPROMISE OUR PEACE, SAFETY, AND COMFORT TO TEACH DURING THE PANDEMIC, AND WE CAME BACK TO DO IT AGAIN.

THE EMOTIONAL STRESS THAT OUR TEACHERS HAD TO ENDURE LAST YEAR WAS LIKE NO OTHER, AND YET WE CAME BACK TO DO IT AGAIN.

WE ARE MENTALLY, PHYSICALLY, EMOTIONALLY EXHAUSTED AT TIMES, AND YET WE CAME BACK TO DO IT AGAIN.

REGARDLESS OF WHATEVER BURDENS WE CARRIED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PANDEMIC, WE GAVE IT OUR ALL, WE GAVE IT OUR BEST, AND WE CAME BACK TO DO IT AGAIN.

WE KNEW THIS YEAR WAS GOING TO BRING ITS OWN CHALLENGES.

WE KNEW MOST OF OUR STUDENTS WOULD HAVE BEEN PHYSICALLY OUT OF THE CLASSROOM FOR A YEAR AND A HALF.

WE KNEW THAT THIS VIRUS WAS GOING TO CONTINUE TO CAUSE MANY STRUGGLES AND SETBACKS, AND YET WE STILL CAME BACK TO DO IT AGAIN.

SOME TEACHER DECIDED TO RETIRE, WISH I COULD'VE, OR PURSUED OTHER CAREERS, AND YET WE COMMITTED, SHOWED UP, AND WORKED THROUGHOUT THIS UNPREDICTABLE AND YET AGAIN, UNPRECEDENTED SITUATION.

OTHER DISTRICTS REWARD THEIR TEACHERS FOR MAKING SUCH A COMMITMENT.

WE WANT TO BE APPRECIATED AND WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE OUR REWARD.

PROVIDE YOUR TEACHERS AND STAFF WITH A ONETIME RETENTION BONUS OF $3,000, AND MOVE TEACHERS, LIKE MYSELF, WHO HAVE BEEN STUCK UNDER PROFICIENT 1 FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS TO PROFICIENT 1.

DESPITE THE CARES ACT, INCLUDING BILLIONS OF DOLLARS INTENDED TO BE DISTRIBUTED TO OUR K THROUGH 12 SCHOOLS AND EDUCATORS, MUCH OF IT HAS YET TO BE USED.

COVID HAS SHOWN TO BE ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES TO PUBLIC EDUCATION AND GENERATIONS.

LAST YEAR WAS A HISTORICALLY DIFFICULT YEAR FOR OUR EDUCATORS.

DESPITE OUR INITIAL HOPES, THIS YEAR IS PROVING TO BE FAR FROM NORMAL.

MANY OF OUR CHILDREN ARE OUT OF A PHYSICAL CLASSROOM FOR NEARLY A YEAR AND A HALF,

WHICH MEANS SOME OF MY 7TH GRADERS HAVEN'T BEEN IN A NORMAL CLASSROOM SINCE 5TH GRADE.

AS A RESULT, 2021 IS NOW THE YEAR OF DEVIOUS LICKS, WITH SIGNIFICANT BEHAVIORAL ISSUES SPANNING ACROSS OUR STATE AND COUNTRY.

BEYOND THE MONEY, TEACHERS ALREADY INVEST IN THEIR OWN CLASSROOMS. LAST YEAR, THE PANDEMIC AND THE NEED TO ADAPT TO REMOTE LEARNING, FORCED MANY TO BUY EXTRA MONITORS, WEBCAMS, MICROPHONES, HEADSETS, CABLES, AND ONLINE SERVICES OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKETS.

VETERAN TEACHERS ARE FORCED TO RE-INVENT AND DIGITIZE THEIR ENTIRE CLASS ON THE FLY.

WHEN OUR COMMUNITIES NEEDED IT MOST, OUR PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS AND STAFF STEPPED UP AND DELIVERED. IN RESPONSE.

SCHOOL DISTRICTS ACROSS OUR STATE AWARDED SIGNIFICANT BONUSES AND PAY RAISES TO OUR EDUCATORS.

IN DALLAS ISD, HOWEVER, THAT WASN'T THE CASE.

WE GOT NO BONUSES.

OUR TEACHERS WERE AWARDED A MEAGER RAISE OF 2.5 PERCENT.

THAT AMOUNT IS BELOW INFLATION LEVELS OF FOUR PERCENT, WHICH MEANS THAT TEACHERS WERE LEFT WITH LESS INCOME THAN THEY HAD THE YEAR BEFORE.

WITH THIS CARES ACT MONEY, THE DISTRICT HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO CORRECT THIS AND DO RIGHT BY OUR EDUCATORS.

EVERY TEACHER AND CERTIFIED STAFF MEMBER SHOULD RECEIVE A ONETIME $3,000 RETENTION BONUS PAID OUT OF THESE FUNDS.

IT'S THE LEAST WE CAN DO.

AS THE COVID CASES CONTINUE TO RISE, I'VE NOTICED THAT WE'VE STOPPED SANITIZING AS MUCH AS WE DID LAST YEAR, WE DON'T TAKE TEAMS AT EVERY SCHOOL.

WHY DID WE STOP? I THINK WE NEED TO START, THEIR BACKSLIDE NUMBERS CAN GO DOWN.

I CHECKED IN ANOTHER DISTRICT AND THEY DO COVID TESTS EVERY WEEK.

THEIR NUMBERS ARE GOING DOWN.

WE ONLY DO TESTS THAT WE HAVE SYMPTOMS. SOMETIMES WE MIGHT NOT HAVE SYMPTOMS, BUT WE MIGHT BE COVID POSITIVE.

SO CAN WE LOOK AT SOME OF THOSE THINGS THAT WE CAN START TAKING THESE TESTS? WE CAN CHOOSE TO TAKE A TEST IF WE WANT TO GO TAKE A TEST WITHOUT HAVING SYMPTOMS, AND PARENTS CAN SIGN FOR THEIR STUDENTS THAT TAKE TESTS EVERY WEEK IF THEY WOULD LIKE TO.

I THINK WE WILL CUT DOWN ON SOME OF THESE CASES BECAUSE OUR CASES ARE RATHER TOO MUCH.

WHAT I WANT TO SAY FINALLY, WE KNOW THAT RELATIONSHIPS MATTER.

BUT THE ISSUES AT THE FOREFRONT FOR TEACHERS AND STAFF HAVE BEEN A LONG-STANDING ISSUE, ONLY MADE WORSE BY COVID-19; BEING OVERWORKED, UNDERAPPRECIATED, AND UNDERPAID.

HERE-IN LIES THE PROBLEM, FEWER PEOPLE ARE BECOMING EDUCATORS, AND THEN THE EDUCATORS WE HAVE, HAVE HAD ENOUGH.

AS EVIDENCE, IT'S NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND A SUBSTITUTE TEACHER. WHY WOULD THEY? THEY ARE LITERALLY PUTTING THEMSELVES AT RISK FOR ILLNESS AND DEATH BY STEPPING IN THE CLASSROOM.

CLASSROOMS ARE COMBINED, THE NUMBER'S NOT SAFE TO PREVENT COVID SPREAD AND TOO LARGE TO EFFECTIVELY TEACH.

NURSES ARE STRETCHED IN WORKING TO IDENTIFY, ISOLATE, AND CONTACT-TRACE STUDENTS WITH COVID WHILE CARING FOR THEM IN THEIR CLINICS.

WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH BUS DRIVERS OR FOOD SERVICE WORKERS DUE TO SHORTAGES, ILLNESS, AND QUARANTINE.

THE MOTOR POOL IS UNDER STAFFED SO EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES ARE NOT REACHING STUDENTS IN A TIMELY MANNER.

WE CANNOT AFFORD TO LOSE MORE PEOPLE.

TEACHERS AND SCHOOL STAFF ARE SHOWING UP EVERY DAY DESPITE THESE CHALLENGES.

WE'RE STRESSED. WE ARE WORRIED.

WE WONDER IF TODAY IS THE DAY WE GET ILL, OR IS TODAY THE DAY WE BRING COVID TO OUR FAMILIES OR TO OUR UNVACCINATED STUDENTS, DESPITE BEING VACCINATED OURSELVES, AND WE ARE NAVIGATING BETWEEN PARENTS ANGRY ABOUT MATH, AND QUARANTINES, AND VACCINATIONS, AND THE DESIRE TO KEEP OURSELVES AND OUR STUDENTS SAFE.

WE ARE GIVING EVERYTHING WE HAVE AND WE HAVE BEEN DOING IT FOR A LONG TIME.

I THINK THAT WHILE WE HAVE A RACIAL EQUITY POLICY THAT I SUPPORT IT, I STILL FIND SOME ISSUES THAT NEED TO BE ADDRESSED FOR THE CHILDREN THAT NEED THE MOST.

IF WE PUT IT IN FRONT OF US, IT IS A REMINDER THAT WE HAVE TO DO BETTER.
